Adrafinil, originally manufactured by the French pharmaceutical company Lafon under the name Olmifon, is considered a eugeroic nootropic compound.
Eugeroics are wakefulness promoting drugs, usually offering many of the benefits of a stimulant but without some of the negative side effects often experienced with other stimulants.
In the body, Adrafinil is processed into Modafinil, resulting in nearly identical effects.
Adrafinil experiences can vary depending on the individual but most users experience increased daytime wakefulness, increased energy, higher levels of alertness and improved motivation.
Many people also report mood elevation as part of the Adrafinil experience.
There are some side effects to be noted ranging from mild to severe.

- Converted into Modafinil by the liver
- Increases energy, wakefulness & motivation
- Boosts mental performance & focus
Adrafinil and Energy
Related Topics
Adrafinil is commonly reviewed by users as a pleasurable energy booster, but without many of the unpleasant effects of other stimulants such as increased heart rate, decline in appetite, or general jitteriness.
A majority of users do not experience any kind of sleep disturbance with Adrafinil.
The energy increase in often noted as feeling like a pleasurable level of awareness and clarity, similar to drinking a few cups of good coffee, but extended and without the peak and drop-off of caffeine.
The increase in energy level is more often noted via productivity increases, rather than experiencing a large bolt in energy level.
Adrafinil works by selectively stimulating adrenergic receptors in our brain. These are the receptors typically responding to norepinephrine (noradrenaline), which is a neurotransmitter linked to energy, learning, memory, concentration and alertness.
The energy level enhancement feels very normal and “smooth”. People describe the effect as noticeable but not distracting or uncomfortable.
Adrafinil and Focus
The effects on focus can be one of the most dramatic benefits of this smart drug. Users report an effortless attention to detail which lasts for several hours.
You may experience an increase in awareness of what is going on around you. If working on a project, the ability to focus intensely feels natural with no need to force yourself to concentrate.
When working on a project, users report a sort of craving for perfection in whatever task you are performing. Adrafinil is beneficial for studying or when working for long periods of time when mental fatigue can set in causing focus and concentration to lag.
You can expect concentration to be easily directed and whatever project is at hand will feel as if it requires all of your attention.
Adrafinil and Mood
Working on the Dopamine receptors D2 and D3, this smart drug binds to the same site on Dopamine transporters as cocaine. It blocks Dopamine transporters and increases Dopamine levels in the brain.
This is probably why many people experience a feeling of euphoria and overall well-being. Users regularly mention feeling more relaxed, less anxious and having a more positive outlook on things. Verbal and written fluency seem to be enhanced for some people.
The mood elevation effect of Adrafinil tends to work synergistically to increase the other effects of this drug. It can allow the user a feeling of mental well-being, an increased interest in what is going on around them and the ability to begin and complete tasks with great focus.
Motivation is increased, procrastination is decreased. Most users will notice an improvement in cognitive skills involving memory, learning, attention and recall, as well as part of the typical Adrafinil experience.

- Increases energy, wakefulness and motivation
- Boosts mental performance and focus
- Supports memory and cognition
Adrafinil Experience Reviews
The following are some direct Adrafinil experiences from users who have taken the compound for nootropic purposes. They report the effects they have experienced, noting personal differences in their experiences. These Adrafinil reviews can give an idea of how this compound affects a variety of people.
“About 30 minutes after dosing, I began to feel the onset; I felt maybe a little bit heavier, my eyes were open a little more, I felt as though I was obligated to pay attention to uninteresting things. 90 minutes into the experience, I began feeling what I believe its full effects. I had an increased awareness of what was going on around me, I felt very optimistic about everything, and I had almost God-like powers to think and concentrate.
I felt very much awake. This was a blessing, because I battle with chronic fatigue every day and usually sleep more than 12 hours per day. This effect was nothing like an Amphetamine; I was not anxious, my heartbeat was normal, and my appetite was not disrupted. There was also some euphoria behind it, which leads me to believe that this drug has dopaminergic effects.
It is now six hours after the dose, and I am still feeling the plateau of this drug. Perhaps a slight comedown, but nothing like the 9/11-style crash of Amphetamines.” – Alza 36 [1]
“Adrafinil requires a slightly higher dose than Modafinil, but the effects are essentially the same. The difference is that Adrafinil does not require a prescription in the US as of 2007 and is therefore much easier to obtain. […]
[…] Adrafinil not only acted as a great, long-lasting stimulant, I found it to be a powerful mood elevator as well. My entire outlook on life changed for the better. Adrafinil creates a feeling of energized confidence and awareness with none of the jitters or comedown of other stimulants. […]
After extensive experimentation with dosage, I have settled on taking 300 mg when I wake up and another 300 mg in the early afternoon. There does not seem to be much, if any, habituation or tolerance created by Adrafinil. Higher doses do create a stronger effect, but (IMO) don’t make enough of a difference to be worthwhile — Adrafinil is, unfortunately, fairly expensive (about $1 per tablet) and there is an obvious incentive to stretch out one’s supply. Occasionally I will take doses up to 1200 mg when a high degree of concentration is required. […]
In conclusion, I cannot recommend Adrafinil highly enough. I have experienced no negative side effects or addiction whatsoever from this chemical. I have stopped using it for a week at a time on a couple of occasions as a test, and while I miss it (obviously) I don’t feel any cravings, headaches, or physical symptoms of withdrawal. I do take milk thistle as a precaution against possible liver effects.
From reading other experiences I can tell that Adrafinil is not for everyone, but it has been very helpful to me as a stimulant/antidepressant/cognitive enhancer.” – BodhiSvaha [2]
“As a university student seeking to enhance cognitive function, particularly motivation and mental alertness, I decided to purchase the psychostimulant Adrafinil.
A single 600 mg dose of Adrafinil provided increased drive and a moderate stimulatory effect, qualitatively similar to 200mg of caffeine. The onset of effects, for me, came approximately 30 mins after ingestion and the sense of heightened alertness persisted for several hours afterwards.
In addition to a moderate stimulatory effect, I found adrafinil to increase the capacity of my working-memory. I attribute this to the ability of adrafinil to increase mental speed, thereby permitting faster manipulation and processing of information.
Cognition aside, adrafinil also increased my physical energy. This effect is in accordance with one clinical study in rats, where it was demonstrated adrafinil increased locomotive activity.
At 600mg daily for 30 days, I did not experience any side-effect. In contrast to others who have used adrafinil, my sleep was not interrupted.
I only use adrafinil in the weeks preceeding exams, since clinical studies have not been conducted to investigate the long-term effects of this drug.
Nevertheless, for those wishing to increase alertness and general mental function, I recommend adrafinil as a good alternative to caffeine. ” – Student [3]
“On the internet, I read about an interesting drug called Modafinil. The account I read was quite a good one, and praised the drug. So I searched online and found out about Adrafinil. Due to price and legality, I chose Adrafinil over Modafinil. The only thing I was concerned about was the potential liver damage that Adrafinil may cause (it may change levels of certain enzymes in the liver if used very regularly). As far as I have read, it is no concern if you’re not going to use the drug very often.
The first time I used it was during school. That particular day, I skipped breakfast and took 300mg (one pill) around 8:45. Around 9:00, it hit me: I was more focused in school than I had been in a very long time. The subject matter wasn’t even that interesting, but I had complete focus on the lesson. Once I realized I had this ability to focus, I could focus my complete attention on anything. I could study the clock for 15 minutes straight if I really wanted to. No longer did my eyes dart around the classroom, desperately seeking a focal point. School work became quite easy, and I finished it in record time because I wasn’t distracted at all.
As far as mental stimulation goes, there wasn’t a whole lot. Adrafinil didn’t make me ‘think,’ I felt that I was thinking on my own accord. My thoughts wouldn’t wander nearly as much, and I didn’t find myself thinking about superficial things a whole lot.
Adrafinil differed greatly from most other stimulants. Caffeine always made it impossible for me to sleep. I could take Adrafinil and go to sleep with ease. In fact, it may have made it easier since it prevented my mind from wandering. But sometimes I found myself just not wanting to sleep. I would stay up and read for hours on end. Caffeine also gave me a sort of ‘inner tension,’ while Adrafinil did not.
Later, I started taking adrafinil about three times a week. At one point, I did take a dose of 600mg (two pills), but I found myself getting an acute ‘mental headache,’ the kind you get from staring at a television screen too long. 450mg (one and a half pills), I found out, was the perfect dose for me. Besides for the headaches at higher doses, the only other undesirable effect was the sulfur smell that would plague my urine for almost 48 hours after all effects of the drug had worn off. ” – randyyy [4]

Adrafinil Side Effects
Adrafinil is generally well tolerated by most users who take it at recommended dosages. Some mild side effects have been reported by users though.
Side effects with Adrafinil range from very mild to severe. Mild side effects may include stomach pain, headaches. a general feeling of tension, nausea, anxiety/nervousness, insomnia/sleep disturbances, weight/appetite loss, dizziness, and irritation of the skin.
One user describes having a number of these minor side effects:
“*I’ve been getting a little stomach irritation, nothing very bad and nothing I would describe as nausea, but I get occasional irritation nonetheless. Usually goes away pretty quickly, so there’s that.
*I get occasional headachy type feelings. Mild like the stomach irritation and will often go away and is easy to ignore if there, but I’d be happier not to get that feeling to begin with.
*Not wanting to sleep. Even though I can and it’s great when I do, I find myself not WANTING to sleep until it’s really late. This has meant staying up late watching TV in the living room and inevitably falling asleep there when the desire takes over.” – TrashPockets [5]
There are some more serious side effects to be aware of, namely developing one of a series of rare, but serious skin and mucous membrane reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This condition involves developing a fever and flu-like symptoms, as well as a red or purple rash that spreads and blisters.
There is evidence the some people have a certain genetic susceptibility to developing these conditions when they take come medications such as Adrafinil. If you develop any of these symptoms, then stop taking Adrafinil immediately and see a doctor right away.
One serious side effect pertains to an elevation of toxic liver enzymes over a period of use. Because of how it is broken down in the liver, there is a possibility of an accumulation of hepatotoxic enzymes if Adrafinil is used on a regular basis, or at elevated dosages. Because of these reasons, it is recommended that those with liver disease or liver problems generally should not use Adrafinil.
If you plan to use Adrafinil for sustained periods of time, liver enzymes should be monitored by a medical professional. It is recommended that Adrafinil only be used on an as-needed basis, for occasional uses when a boost to mental energy is wanted.
However, some people will want to use it more frequently, and these regular users should be diligent at cycling at regular intervals to give the body time to adapt and recover.
Review
The Adrafinil experience is described by users as very positive, leading to increased productivity and greater workload capacity similar to what is achieved when taking the prescription drug Modafinil.
Adrafinil is a legal and useful smart drug. Dosage is recommended at 100-300mg, beginning small and adding more only if further effect is needed. The benefits can be realized within about an hour of ingesting and usually last for several hours, allowing the user time for focused work or study.
Adrafinil can offer the user enhanced mental performance through better focus, attention to detail, improved mood and increased alertness and wakefulness without the typical negative side effects of other stimulants. Cognitive function is improved.
Due to its potential to adversely affect the liver, it is recommended to use this substance on a situational basis, rather than in a regular routine.
