African Mango Plus is a dietary supplement made from a proprietary blend of herbs, including African mango extract. It is marketed for increasing energy, inducing weight loss and increasing fat oxidation.
African Mango Plus diet pills are used by consumers to control appetite, increase feelings of satiation (feelings of fullness), lose unwanted weight and increase energy.
Each dose contains 150 mg of Irvingia gabonensis extract. I. gabonensis is a tree native to West and Central Africa. It can reach heights of over 40 feet and produces fruits often called African mangos or bush mangos.
Contained in each fruit is a single seed or nut that is used to make African mango supplements. These seeds are high in fiber and fatty acids. Some research suggests that this natural extract may support weight loss, but more research is needed to validate initial results.

- Helps control the appetite
- Increases leptin sensitivity & adiponectin
- Improves blood sugar & cholesterol
African Mango Plus Ingredients
In addition to I. gabonensis, the African Mango Plus supplement also contains:
- 75 mcg (micrograms) chromium polynicotinate;
- 225 mg green tea extract;
- 200 mg caffeine;
- 135 mg EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate);
- 8 mg L-theanine.
Irvingia gabonensis, one of the main ingredients of African Mango Plus, has been observed to reduce appetite, lower cholesterol levels and promote weight loss in overweight individuals.
While these studies have been positive, they have also been criticized for poor reporting and for using substandard methodologies. More research is needed to verify these results and establish the therapeutic effect of Irvingia gabonensis.
African Mango Plus Review
No specific studies have been conducted on African Mango Plus to demonstrate efficacy for weight loss results. This supplement has received 2.5/5 stars on Amazon.com. Some customers report negative effects from the quantity of caffeine.
While there have been no human studies examining the effect of African Mango Plus, various studies have been conducted on the separate ingredients and their effects on weight loss. The following summaries have been compiled from the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.
Caffeine for Weight Loss
Caffeine has been well-studied and is used for a number of therapeutic purposes. For instance, it is considered effective for treating migraines as well as postoperative and tension headaches when used in combination with an analgesic.
Natural Medicines rates it “Likely Effective” for increasing mental alertness. It is rated as “Possibly Effective” for improving asthma, pain, gallbladder disease, hypotension (low blood pressure), Parkinson’s disease, athletic performance, diabetes and obesity.
It is rated “Possibly Effective” for short-term weight loss when combined with ephedrine. However, ephedrine is considered unsafe and should not be used as a dietary supplement.
Caffeine has also been observed to temporarily increase athletic performance, but not in short-term, intense exercises (such as sprinting).
Chromium Polynicotinate Review
African Mango Plus contains 75 mcg (micrograms) of chromium polynicotinate per serving.
Trivalent chromium is present in a number of natural sources and has a wide margin of safety. Hexavalent chromium is a known toxin.
Trivalent chromium is used for improving glycemic control in individuals with diabetes. Its many uses include treating impaired glucose tolerance and promoting weight loss.
Chromium picolinate has been observed to reduce fasting blood glucose and insulin levels. [4]
Research has been conducted on the effects of chromium on weight loss, but results have been contradictory. There is not enough evidence to rate its use for obesity and weight loss, but research continues on these topics. [4]
Green Tea Extract for Fat Loss
Each dose of African Mango Plus contains 225 mg of green tea extract. Green tea is used for cognitive performance, mental alertness, hyperlipidemia (high blood lipid levels), obesity and weight loss.
Green tea has been observed to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
There is conflicting evidence for the use of green tea for obesity and weight loss. In some studies, specific green tea extracts have helped obese and moderately obese individuals lose weight.
Irvingia Gabonensis Effects
Each capsule of African Mango Plus contains 150 mg of Irvingia gabonensis.
In small human trials, I. gabonensis has been observed to help reduce appetite, lower cholesterol levels and help overweight individuals lose weight. However, these studies have been criticized for poor methodology and reporting. More research is needed to rate the effectiveness of I. gabonensis for weight loss.
L-Theanine Review
L-theanine is a form of the amino acid theanine found in African Mango Plus capsules. Theanine is primarily found in tea leaves.
It is used for anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease and hypertension. Preliminary studies indicate it can elevate the levels of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid), dopamine and serotonin in the brain. It may improve certain markers of learning and memory. It is thought to be helpful with managing anxiety.
African Mango Plus Dosage
According to the manufacturer’s website, consumers must wait to receive the product to find out the daily dose. Included with the product is a diet and exercise plan that is designed to support supplementation.
