Artemisinin dosages vary according to what condition is being treated.
Artemisinin is the active medicinal ingredient found within the Artemisia annua or Sweet Wormwood plant. It is in the Asteraceae plant family, and has tiny yellow flowers.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Artemisia annua is known as Ching-hao, which refers to the leafy tops of the plant. Most of the artemisinin content is localized in the upper leaves. The stems, roots and seeds have none of this component.
Artemisinin is recommended today as a powerful medicine that can reduce the number of parasites in the blood of patients with malaria. Artemisinin-combination therapy is recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization) as the most effective and cost-effective treatment.
This supplement is also used to improve the immune system and has been studied for its anti-cancer effects. Derivatives of artemisinin include the fat-soluble compound artemether; dosages will depend on the concentration of these derivatives within the plant extract.

Artemisinin Dosages for Malaria

There are about 100 million cases of malaria in Africa each year, constituting 90 percent of the cases worldwide with nearly 2 million deaths each year.
Artemisinin has been found to reduce the number of Plasmodium parasites found in the blood of patients with malaria. It is often administered as a first-line treatment to reduce the majority of parasites in the blood.
ACTs (Artemisinin-combination therapies) combine this phytochemical with other drugs that are capable of eliminating any of the remaining parasites to eradicate this disease.
In a study published in December 1994 in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, a treatment schedule of 2 x 500 mg of artemisinin (oral dose) per day for 48 hours was advised.
This resulted in the necessary antimalarial plasma concentrations, even with poor bioavailability (absorption rate) and rapid elimination half-life of 2.59 plus or minus 0.55 hours.
As a malaria preventative, the Artemisinin dose would be 100mg to 200mg three times a day. This should be taken a couple of days before and after a trip to a malaria zone. A single ingredient dose is only recommended if in malaria affected area for a few days.
Artemisinin Combination Therapy
For longer exposure in malaria areas, the WHO has approved the ACT drug riamet (Coartem), which combines lumefantrine 120 mg with artemether 20 mg from artemisinin. The treatment dosage is 4 tablets initially, then repeating the dosage in 8 hours. It is then taken twice daily for the next 2 days.
This combination has a reported cure rates of up to 98%. This combination also helps prevent single treatment malaria resistance.
If treating a parasite infection, one or two capsules (100mg each) twice a day should be taken before mealtimes. It is used to treat parasite infection for African sleeping sickness and River Blindness.
The exact Artemisinin dosage to help with cancers has not yet been established, but lower amounts, even 150mg daily are believed to be effective.
The 100 to 200 mg dose is also used to relieve stiffness from Fibromyalgia and to boost and fortify the immune system from febrile conditions. It is also taken for dyspepsia and Lyme disease.
For the tincture dry herb to menstruum ratio of 1 : 4 (250 mg of herb per ml) it is suggested to take up to 40 drops in 2 oz. of water or juice, two to four times per day. It is best taken between meals for building up the immune response.
Artemisia Annua was traditionally made into a tea, but this formulation is not as popular today as Artemisinin capsules or tinctures.
Traditional Use of Artemisinin
Ching-hao (Artemisia Annua) was described in the Shennong Bencao Jing – an ancient Chinese book on agriculture and medicinal plants.
In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed this supplement vents heat from the Yin level outward to the Yang and is ideal for clearing heat from the Liver and Gallbladder.
Artemisinin is used to treat summer-heat syndromes that are caused at this time when contaminated food and water are common. This herb can also be burned to keep mosquitoes away.
The dosage is 10-15g for summer heat conditions and 20-40g for treating malaria. The dose is doubled when use the fresh herb. Do not over decoct (no more than five minutes).
It is also available as a quick-dissolving granule. Every sachet is equivalent to 10 grams of the raw herb. The Artemisinin dosage for adults is one sachet, twice a day. It is made with 50-100ml boiling water and stirred with a spoon. It is consumed when the beverage is luke-warm.
For children, the dosage should be reduced according to the weight. Since treatment time for a case of malaria is just 3-5 days, prophylactic therapy should continue for a few days after leaving an infested area.
The dose of artemisinin that has been used clinically for lupus and discoid lupus has ranged from 0.2-0.6 grams per day; this corresponds to a dose of ching-hao of about 20-30 grams, the same as used to treat malaria. Treatment time is typically about 3 months.
Artemisinin Contraindications
Side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It shouldn’t be taken with the herbs Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Radix Angelicae sinensis or Radix rehmanniae. Cases of hypoglycemia and cardiac events have been reported following large Artemisinin dosages.
It has caused rashes and hives and abscesses when injected. It shouldn’t be taken with grapefruit juice. It is not to be taken with calcium channel blockers or anti-viral or antifungal medication. Pregnant and post-partum women with iron deficiencies should also avoid this supplement.
Artemisinin dosing does vary according to the reason it is being taken. It is available in a powder form, as a capsule, in a tincture and in the granulated form available online.
It has many applications worldwide for treating malaria and parasites and as an anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and antifungal. It is being studied also for its potential as an anti-cancer treatment.

I have been diagnosed with cervical cancer, stage 2, HPV confirmed. I started with Salicinium IVs and now doing the oral form. After four months, It doesn’t seem to be working very well evidenced recently by more frequent flare-ups with bleeding. My N.D. and I are interested in Arteminisin vaginal suppositories. The pharmacy can do Artesunate 200mg. I have been reading blogs about personal experiences that deal with the oral pills only. Do you have any recommendations for this method of dealing with cervical cancer vaginally? Your comments are very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Su Ysi
Su Ysi, go to Lyra Nara website, Artesunate is synthetic form, you need natural form, it works so much better.

My husband was diagnosed esophagus cancer..he was treated 6 weeks of radiation and 3 chemo therapy. After 6 weeks a PET scan was done and we told the cancer had spread to his lung, spine and lymph nodes…he was still looking fine at that stage..but then he got offer a “trial” that we were told is going to build up immune system and then destroy the cancer…unfortunately 2 days from his first trial treatment he developed a cough….the oncology doctor said it is the side effect from the treatment. The cough is getting worsen…till after 2 weeks the second trial treatment began…Still the cough is not going away but getting bad and a few bumps started popping up on his chess and stomach..
I wasn’t very happy with my husband’s conditions…so they CT scan , X ray and did biopsy…and they told us the cancer is spreading …and the 3 trial treatment was cancelled…he was given steriod that is supposely to help…this also made it worse…foot..leg swollen…weight kept going down..and the doctor told us there is only 3 months for my husband to live.So depressing and sad.
I ordered the Artemisinin but since it is Christmas and new year..it still has not arrives..and I am desperate with it.
So, how many shall I give my husband…is it 2 caps twice a day….is it to be taken before meal.?..any side effect that I can expect.?As he is very weak now.

Hi,
I’m reaching out to find anything to help my husband. Nine months ago my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. he has had 20 rounds of chemo. After his 6th round of chemo his CT Scan showed 60% reduction. His 12 round of chemo showed stable. But then on his 18the round it showed progression. They have changed his treatment to 2 different chemo medicines. We are searching for any and all ‘All Natural” methods to try and rid his body of this cancer. Do you think this herb can help and if so how much and how many times a day. Thank you for your help
Wendy, go to Lyra Nara website for products. It is the strongest form and is mixed with other products to enhance, one being dmso which delivers the product across the blood barrier instantly.
Hi Wendy, I have read this is very efective if taken with an Iron sup, tests r either going on now or in near future for humans.
Also get a book called the Bruess Cancer Cure, this diet takes 6 weeks and kills cancer, tumors, Lukemia (miss spelt) I have know it to cure 2 out of 3 ppl I gave diet too, one with nterminal breast cancer, and another with a brain tumor it fixed, 1 with lung cancer it did not be she said in the finish that she felt the best when taking it. It is an immune builder so cannot be taken with chemo. The one it didn’t help was doing it all at once….so it would not of worked.
Best of luck
Gary
PS. you can get book & diet ingredience at local health food store Gary

500 Mg. of Vitamin C x 4 times per day taken along with EGCG.
500 Mg fish oil x twice per day.
500 mg of Vitamin D-3 once per day.
500 mg of Magnolia bark extract once per day.
Hello – as I read through your list of supplements, your vitamin C is not near high enough. You need at least 12,000 mg of Vitamin C per day to fight disease. Preferrably 16,000. Or take the lipsomal form, which is much more absorbable. My mom is taking 16,000 MG per day to fight stage 3 lung cancer. Also, your vitamin D is way way too low. You should take 50,000 IU per day for 10 days and then decrease to 25,000 IU for maintenance as you continue to fight it. My mom has been taking 25,000 IU per day now for six months.
Your diet is also very important. Search out a chat group on Facebook called sq 1. There are over 7000 members who are all touched by cancer who are healing themselves naturally. Many without conventional therapy.
My mom’s cancer tumor has shrunk by 50% in three months time – all natural, no chemo, no radiation.
Hi can you tell me what dosage is required for breast cancer, and can the patient take artemisinin alone or does it need to be coupled with iron sup.?thanks
My mother-in-law was just recently diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. The cancer is mainly in the liver. And some in the bones. What would be a recommended dosage for her? She did have one round of chemo despite the doctor really wanting to do it. Is this something that would work for her?
