Rhodiola Rosea Plant Guide
Related Topics
Rhodiola is, to many Western nations, relatively new both as a plant and an alternative medicine. In part this is due to the fact that the plant only grows in inhospitable mountainous regions.
This hardy perennial likes the cold and high altitudes. In fact it would appear that the harsher the climate, the more beneficial properties the plant contains.
In many countries, particularly in the rural regions, this plant has had a tradition of medicinal use for many centuries. It has long since been revered in places like Siberia, Scandinavia and Tibet.
Yet the plant itself varies from country to country and region to region. There are many varieties of Rhodiola and, it would appear, many strains of Rhodiola Rosea within those varieties. Each, it would seem, has its own beneficial properties, but only one, the Siberian Rhodiola Rosea, has them all.
Rhodiola in History
Although the Greek physician Dioscorides mentions Rhodiola rosea, or Rodia riza as it was known then, back in 77AD, little was popularized since. However it would seem the Western world, or much of it, was unaware of this herb, while some in varying parts of the globe were taking advantage.
It wasn’t until after the Iron Curtain came down in 1990 that the US became aware of its properties. In this case much of the notoriety was instigated by a former Soviet Union athletic coach who emigrated to the US. The coach, a doctor named Ben Tabachnik revealed that Rhodiola Rosea had done much to assist former Soviet Union athletes in achieving maximum potential.
Further revelations came about in 2002 when a book was published by Dr Zakir Ramazanov which translated much of the research done during the Cold War.
Siberian Rhodiola Rosea as an Adaptogen
Since this time, the research and interest in products like Rhodiola Complex has grown substantially. However it is clear that much is still not understood. Several herbs provide benefits which are seen as being adaptogenic.
When a herb is adaptogenic, it means that it has qualities which can bring the body back into metabolic balance. If you are stressed, they will de-stress you. If you are fatigued, they will provide energy.
In short an adaptogen is non-specific. It is not treating an individual symptom, it is treating the whole person relative to their holistic health requirements. It returns a body and its cells, back to what is known as homeostasis.
The means by which the Rhodiola Rosea does this is relatively unknown. Research is on-going, but study after study appears to reflect significant findings that it is of positive benefit relating to numerous conditions. It is known that chemically it has the potential to affect both serotonin and cortisol. These chemicals affect the body in respect of stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue.
Using Rhodiola with Other Herbs
Many supplements provide rhodiola as a single-ingredient formulation. Balance Rhodiola Complex from Solgar is different in that it provides a complete herbal formula based around the benefits of the rhodiola rosea plant.
The chemical constituents within all Rhodiola plants are thought to have individual benefits, but such effects are increased when they are combined with other herbs.
The main compounds are thought to be salidroside and rosavins which work better in combination. These combinations are further affected by the proportion of each chemical within each individual plant.
The application of herbs working better in combination is not a new concept, many purchasers buy one supplement thought to support another. Others buy herbal supplements which are already combined in the correct proportions.
Several studies have been undertaken measuring the comparative physical benefits of one plant against another grown in a different region. The results have been somewhat definitive in proving that myth and rumor have substantial truth.
Particular plants from different regions or even countries, have not only better effects, but also contain different ratios of the same compounds.
Solgar Balance Rhodiola Complex Ingredients
Outside of the combination of compounds within the plant itself, several complexes are available which combine not only Rhodiola but also other herbs. Some, such as the one available from Solgar, appear to include myriad constituents.
In total there are 18 additional herbs and minerals added to Balance Rhodiola Complex. These include Magnesium, Kelp and Montmorency Cherry extract. The beneficial effects of such combinations are unproven, yet the compounds are generally believed to be compatible each ingredient enhancing another.
What is unclear is the species of Rhodiola rosea extract contained within the product. Neither are prospective purchasers informed of the ratios of salidroside and rosavins. Consumers are now becoming aware that these compounds are significant in producing the benefits expected from Rhodiola rosea supplementation.
Any product being sold should aim to provide buyers with information relating to those specific components. Solgar does state that their product contains 250 mg of rhodiola rosea root with 62.5 mg of root extract, but it would be idea to know what the standardized dose of rosavins or salidrosides is in each capsules.
