Bifidophilus is a potent combination of two probiotic bacteria, Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
These two helpful bacteria are combined together because they work symbiotically to restore gut microflora, fight off harmful bacterial agents, decrease gut wall permeability, aid nutrient absorption and to produce some vitamins like Vitamin B and Vitamin K.
Bifidophilus supplements are sold by companies including Nature’s Sunshine Flora Force, LifePlan and VitaBase.

Bifidobacterium, also referred to as bifidus, are dominant among the gut flora of infants and then slowly decrease as humans age until finally, as adults, there may only be 3-10% bifidus bacteria throughout the digestive tract, mouth and vagina.
B. longum is an important species of bifidus bacteria and is found in nearly all probiotic formulas because of its protective functions.
Lactobacillus Acidophilus is often referred to simply as acidophilus. It is naturally found in the digestive tract of mammals, including humans.
Many foods are enriched with this well-known probiotic. Acidophilus has been shown to promote proper immune function, prevent yeast infection and to contribute to the maintenance of good cholesterol levels.
Bifidophilus Supplement Effects
Working together, these two probiotic powerhouses are frequently used to restore balance to the microflora of the gut after treatment with antibiotics, illness or other interruption has occurred.
Antibiotics help fight off bad bacteria during times of sickness or infection, but they are not able to discern the difference between good and bad microbes, thus they indiscriminately kill them all. To replenish and restore the microbiome back to healthy levels can take 4-6 months in a healthy individual.
Through supplementation with regular Bifidophilus capsules, restoration can be achieved in as little as 2-4 weeks. For this reason, many doctors prescribe probiotics alongside antibiotic treatment for all of their patients.
Bifidophilus has also been reported to be useful for individuals experiencing leaky gut. This syndrome occurs when lactose and gluten pass into the bloodstream and cause an immune reaction which damages the gut wall. If left untreated, leaky gut can lead to a number of difficult health problems.
Because Bifidophilus contains digestive enzymes which are necessary to synthesize carbohydrates, it helps us to absorb nutrients better. In addition, Bifidophilus produces some important B-vitamins which are necessary for good health.
Benefits of B. longum and Acidophilus
Supplementing with Bifidophilus supports and promotes proper immune responses, leaving little room for pathogenic microorganisms to colonize and cause illness.
When the gut flora has adequate colonies of B. longum and Acidophilus, it produces substances which may kill viruses. People with allergies use Bifidophilus to eliminate or decrease allergic symptoms.
Other individuals diagnosed with autoimmune disorders resulting in inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract like IBS (Irritable Bowel Disease), IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and Crohn’s Disease can benefit from supplementing with Bifidophilus, especially if taken in combination with other probiotic agents.
Supplementation with Bifidophilus Flora Force has been reported to be effective in the prevention or treatment of vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida albicans. Yeast infections often occur due to antibiotic use because the good bacteria have been depleted and yeast overgrowth occurs.
When an overgrowth of candida albicans occurs in the GI tract, episodes of mouth thrush or athlete’s foot are probable. Bifidophilus supplementation contributes to the restoration of probiotic organisms throughout the entire system.
Together in one formula, Acidophilus is used to control candida growth while B. longum synthesizes B vitamins and works to maintain appropriate and healthy immune responses.
Dosing Recommendations for Bifidophilus
Many people can benefit through supplementation with Bifidophilus. Take Bifidophilus after any course of antibiotic treatment to help the gut flora regain a proper balance as soon as possible.
Those who are prone to UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) may find Bifidophilus an effective preventative.
Individuals diagnosed with inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract often use probiotics to ease symptoms like bloating and distention of the abdomen.
Some blends of Bifidophilus contain other probiotic organisms, as well, but the standard number of living bacterial microorganisms in a dose of Bifidophilus is typically as follows:
- 2.5 billion Lactobacillus Acidophilus
- 1 billion CFU Bifidobacterium Longum
A majority of Bifidophilus supplements are found in pill form with an enteric coating which assures their survival through the early digestive tract, allowing them to reach the large intestine and colon where they quickly go to work ridding the body of pathogenic bacteria.
Conclusion
Bifidophilus is a useful and popular probiotic combination formula made up of Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium Longum.
These two probiotics work in concert with one another to effectively restore proper microflora balance, while also fighting vaginal yeast infection, UTIs and inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract.
Bifidophilus is considered generally safe for most people. Those with weakened immune systems should not use probiotics unless under the direction of a doctor. Parents should talk with a doctor regarding the correct dose for infants or young children.

why shouldn’t those with weakened immune systems use bifidophilus
Hi Sarah,
This is the general disclaimer applied to all probiotic supplements. There is a small risk that those with weakened immune systems may experience side effects when using probiotics like Bifidophilus. Out of caution, it is recommended to avoid probiotics that provide high dosages of bacteria – even good bacteria that can help the digestive tract.
Can Bifidophilus Flora Force be taken as a daily supplement even if you’re not taking antibiotics? I have a bottle full and paid quite a bit for them and only used them for 5 days. Really would hate to see them go to waste.
