Biogaia prodentis is a probiotic food supplement enriched with Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis. This supplement is designed to promote dental health, prevent gum deterioration and improve symptoms of bad breath.
Biogaia Prodentis tablets contain LAB (Lactic Acid Bacteria) which confer a beneficial effect on the health of the mouth when they are present in sufficient quantities. These good probiotic bacteria combat the growth of bad bacteria that can contribute to the formation of dental plaque, cavities and gum deterioration.
Each Biogaia Prodentis tablet contains at least 200 million live Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria and is taken daily in the evening after brushing and flossing the teeth. This product is also available as a mint flavored lozenge that dissolves in the mouth or as a mint chewing gum that needs to be chewed for at least five minutes.

It is estimated that 75% of people will have gum disease at sometime in their life. The elderly, those with diabetes, women during pregnancy and smokers are more susceptible to dental problems.
Gums disease symptoms include gums that are red, sore and bleed after brushing and bad breath. Good oral hygiene of brushing and flossing is important as plaque turns into tartar that has to be scrapped off by a dental hygienist if it is allowed to harden on the teeth.
Using probiotics helps those with existing dental conditions and also serves as a preventative so the gums and teeth remain healthy. Probiotics like Biogaia’s proprietary strain of Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis also help to combat bad breath by limiting gas-emitting bacteria.
Prodentis may also help prevent and treat oral Candida infections. The elderly and those on frequent antibiotic treatments have a high risk for these infections.
Biogaia Prodentis Effects
A clinical study published in the Journal of Dental Research in September 2015 used one lozenge containing two strains of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri or a placebo for patients aged 60 to 102 with chronic oral Candida infections in a nursing home.
The strains used in this study were Lactobacillus reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289), which are the same as those found in BioGaia ProDentis supplements.
This treatment was given twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening for 12 weeks. In the probiotic group there was a marked reduction in the Candida counts but not in the placebo group.
Biogaia Prodentis for Preventing Cavities
A clinical study published in Beneficial Microbes in December 2014 studied the specifics of dental caries and periodontal disease that involved increases in pathogenic microorganisms. Increases in demineralization and inflammation level markers were also studied.
The results indicate that Lactobacillus reuteri strains NCIMB 701359, NCIMB 701089, NCIMB 702655 and NCIMB 702656 inhibited S. mutans (causes dental caries/cavities) to non-detectable levels.
L. reuteri strains also had the highest antioxidant capacity of the tested strains. This finding suggests that the L. reuteri probiotic strain is suitable for both dental caries and periodontal disease therapeutics.
A clinical study published in Current Microbiology in February 2011 showed the probiotic Lactobacilli inhibits the Streptococcus mutans (causes caries) biofilm formation in vitro.
The study also found that the probiotics antimicrobial activity against S. mutans was pH-dependent, which why some probiotic strains were more effective than other strains.
Biogaia Prodentis for Gingivitis
Biogaia Prodentis lozenges are also used to prevent and/or treat symptoms of Gingivitis (gum disease).
A clinical study published in the journal of Clinical Periodontology in August 2012 showed a L. reuteri treatment of daily tablets for eight weeks to gingivitis patients reduced the number of periodontal pathogens.
This probiotic bacterium specifically inhibited the growth of bacteria in the subgingival microbiota, occurring under the gums in the crevices between the gum margins and the neck and root of the teeth.
A clinical study published in the Scandinavian Acta Odontologica Scandinavica in July 2009 showed the treatment of L. reuteri chewing gum chewed for 10 minutes daily over two weeks reduced gum bleeding caused by Gingivitis.
This result was because of the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines(proteins produced by white blood cells) in the GCF (gingival crevicular fluid).
BioGaia Prodentis Safety and Warnings
Probiotics that contain Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis are considered safe to consume for children, adults, elderly and pregnant women. BioGaia probiotics have been studied in more than 20 scientific trials, with a very low incidence of side effects.
Despite the safety of ProDentis probiotic supplements, there are some individuals who should not use probiotics due to a risk of infection.
Probiotics should not be taken by those with impaired immune systems such as organ donor recipients or those with open surgical wounds. People with SBS (Short Bowel Syndrome) should also avoid probiotics.
Probiotics do interact with antibiotics and need to be taken at least two hours apart. People with milk or yeast allergies should avoid probiotics with these ingredients.
Biogaia prodentis is an important supplement for good dental and digestive health. This probiotic product also helps with oral Candida infections and to help reduce bad breath.
