Citicoline is a derivative of a naturally occurring and essential nutrient (Choline, a member of the B vitamin family) which also has a number of helpful benefits for the brain.
First, it aids in the protection of cell membranes for neurons and others within the central nervous system. It also increases the efficiency of Dopamine receptors and helps with the synthesis of Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is critical to a wide range of cognitive processes.
Some areas of mental performance that Acetylcholine affects include memory formation, learning capacity, speed of recall, and even enhancing attention span, concentration, and focusing abilities.
Incidentally, Citicoline may be very effective for use in elderly people experiencing age-related cognitive decline. Numerous studies have shown that supplementation can help to reverse or at least slow down this process.
There is also hope that taking Citicoline before the onset of memory loss or senile dementia may protect against the development of these conditions.
This ‘nootropic’ supplement is very neuroprotective and can remove toxins from your neurons while repairing damage and improving oxygen supply.
Piracetam:
Piracetam is probably the most popular brain supplement and was actually the first of these nootropics ever discovered.
Pircetam has been known to help increase memory, learning capacity, and a number of other cognitive processes.
The main method of action is to help boost the functioning of Ach transmitters and receptors. This is done by increasing the levels of circulating Acetylcholine within the brain.
As the Cholinergic activity in the brain increases, this leads to an improvement in memory, learning capacity, and even better access to long-term memory for some people. It has also been shown to significantly increase the blood flow to brain along with enhancing oxygen and glucose uptake.
One of the best ways to ensure the effectiveness of this brain supplement is by taking a high quality Choline supplement along with it (Citicoline is an excellent idea). This helps to potentiate the effects by giving the brain more raw materials to work with since the Choline is a natural precursor to Acetylcholine.
Creatine:
Creatine is not only one of the most popular sports supplements on the market today (and for good reason) but it also a very popular supplement for enhancing the brain. Creatine is a nitrogenous organic acid found in all vertebrates. Its primary function is to supply all the cells of the body with energy, especially muscle cells.
In fact, it is known that over 95 percent of Creatine found within the human body is stored in the skeletal muscles. The body is capable of producing this substance, primarily through the liver and kidneys.
Creatine works by converting ADP into ATP, which is essentially working energy. This is supplied directly into muscles particularly working muscles. Basically, it is capable of restocking the supply of energy to your body and muscles while engaged in heavy training or physical exertion.
One of the key related benefits to this is that it also leads to an improved feeling of mental energy and clarity. Many users say that they have never before experienced such a strong sense of mental clarity. This also serves to increase memory and attention spans as well as focus and concentration.
Bacopa:
Bacopa Monnieri is a perennial creeping herb found primarily in India which has been used for centuries in traditional medicine.
It is well-known to be an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and sedative. The Indians have also used this supplement to enhance memory, learning, and overall cognitive performance.
Two of the active ingredients include sulfhydryl and polyphenol; both of these actually help to lessen oxidative stress. So, it also works as an anti-oxidant which can keep your brain at peak performance even as you age.
In research studies, people over the age of 55 who took 300 mg Bacopa supplements were found to experience increased memory performance. Specifically, they had improved verbal learning, memory acquisition and performed better on a test of delayed recall.
In another study on people between the ages of 45 and 64, taking 300mg – 450mg of KeenMind brand Bacopa extract results in increased retention of new information as well as a lower rate of forgetting.
Studies also show benefits in children as well as in young adults aged 18 – 29. One study showed improved working memory function as well as better accuracy on a test of rapid identification and increased self-reported energy levels.
There are also minimal side effects from this natural herb. In some studies, it shows the same rate of adverse effects as an inactive placebo.
A great source of Bacopa Monnieri is in Alpha Brain which is one of the most popular brain supplement stacks for sale today. Alpha Brain combines many other cognitive enhancement compounds together in an all-natural supplement that targets memory, mental clarity and focus.

Dear Sirs:
This might be the craziest question ever asked, but can brain supplements be the cure-all for the mentally ill?
Sharon
Hi Sharon,
Many mental illnesses do not have cures. However, certain brain supplements can support the natural functions of the brain and may contribute to improved mental health and performance.
Thank you for taking my question seriously! I had been wondering about that for quite a while. There is a lot of mental illness in my family. Wouldn’t it be great if brain supplements solved the problem?
