Developed by the French pharmaceutical company Lafon Laboratories, Adrafinil (Olmifon) is the prototype of a new class of smart drug.
This class has come to be called Eugeroics which means ‘good arousal.’ The compound is used to help promote vigilance and alertness and has been used for sleep disorders such as narcolepsy.
Adrafinil is currently unregulated in the US and can be purchased without a prescription, unlike the related compound Modafinil.
But exactly how does this powerful new compound work and what benefits does it have? Additionally, how does Adrafinil powder fit in with currently available Nootropic compounds?

- Converted into Modafinil by the liver
- Increases energy, wakefulness & motivation
- Boosts mental performance & focus
History of Adrafinil
Related Topics
Adrafinil was first developed by researchers at the French pharmaceutical company Lafon Laboratories. In 1974, Michel Jouvet and another scientist created a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds including Adrafinil, while researching new analgesics.
Adrafinil was found to not have pain-relieving effects, but rather belongs to a class of compounds known as eugeroics, or wakefulness promoting compounds. Adrafinil has stimulant like effects, but is not related structurally or in its mechanism of action to traditional amphetamine based stimulants.
During testing to determine what Adrafinil’s mechanism of action was, Modafinil was discovered in 1976. When ingested, Adrafinil is transported to the liver, where it is broken down into its component parts. These include the inactive modafinilic acid, and the active Modafinil, which has been determined to cause Adrafinil’s effects.
Both Adrafinil and later Modafinil were seen in animal trials to have stimulating effects, causing increased locomotion and alertness. Because of these effects, Adrafinil was first tested in human trials as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and random bouts of sleeping during the day.
In various double-blind placebo-controlled research studies, compared to a placebo, Adrafinil was seen to significantly increase wakefulness and reduce excessive daytime sleepiness. In 1986 Adrafinil was approved in France as a treatment for narcolepsy. Later Modafinil was approved as well in France in 1994, and in the US in 1998.
Lafon made brand name version of both Adrafinil and Modafinil, known as Olmifon and Provigil respectively. In 2001, Lafon was bought by Cephalon Inc, an American pharmaceutical company. Cephalon continued production of Olmifon and Provigil.
In 2011, Cephalon was acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. That same year, production of Olmifon was ceased. Modafinil is the stronger and faster-acting compound compared to Adrafinil, and is the one that has been studied more extensively and used in medicine.
To this day, Cephalon (as a subsidiary of Teva) makes Provigil, as well as Armdodafinil, a refined Modafinil product, which they sell as Nuvigil. Adrafinil is no longer produced by Cephalon, but today is made by a variety of other manufacturers around the world.
Benefits of Adrafinil
There are a number of benefits that Adrafinil online reviews attest to with use of this compound.
Aside from its clinical use as a treatment for narcolepsy and sleep apnea, it is well known to help increase energy levels and restoring a feeling of general well-being.
Many night and shift type workers use this to help ensure they are able to stay awake as needed.
There are also a number of cognitive benefits which is what makes Adrafinil part of the class of Nootropics.
Benefits include an increase in memory, mental energy, focus and concentration along with some users also reporting the ability to think more clearly. This is why buying Adrafinil is considered to be a productivity booster among individuals who use it regularly.
You will also see it used for academic purposes such as studying through the night for an upcoming exam.
Other users and researchers believe that the compound is able to help them overcome mild cases of introversion and social anxiety. Leading to increased talkativeness and sociability would be an excellent benefit that could definitely help many people.
How Adrafinil Works
As described earlier, Adrafinil’s primary mechanism of action is through its metabolite Modafinil. For this reason, individuals who want to buy Modafinil but are unable to get a prescription for it where they live will sometimes instead buy Adrafinil.
The exact methods of action for Modafinil is not entirely clear at this point although there are several possible explanations given by researchers.
We have observed that the compound increases levels of the neurotransmitter Orexin (Hypocretin). This powerful brain chemical is thought to help regulate arousal, wakefulness, and appetite.
The theory is that as the levels of Orexin are increased in the hypothalamus it also leads to increases in Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Histamine. These three chemicals are primarily responsible for the wakefulness and Nootropic-like effects of Adrafinil.
Another theory about how Adrafinil actually works is that it exerts effects on Glutamate and GABA pathways. The idea behind this is that the Glutamate pathways are activated while the GABA pathways are inhibited.
This interesting idea basically proposes that Adrafinil dosages have both excitatory and inhibiting effects on different parts of the brain.

- Increases energy, wakefulness and motivation
- Boosts mental performance and focus
- Supports memory and cognition
Where to Buy Adrafinil Online
In many countries of the world, Modafinil is a prescription only medication. In the United States it has been categorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Schedule IV prescription drug. Other countries where Modafinil is considered a prescription medication include Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Sweden.
Prescriptions for Modafinil are typically only given for on-label purposes, specifically for narcolepsy, shift-work sleep disorder, and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome. Sometimes off-label prescriptions are written for people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but these are rare.
Many people who want to use Modafinil then for nootropic purposes are out of luck getting the drug legally. There are international online pharmacies that sell Modafinil without a prescription, but there are a number of issues with buying from these sites.
The first main issue with buying Modafinil without a prescription is the possibility of it being confiscated when it goes through customs in your country. While it may be legal for these companies to sell it without a prescription from their country, it comes under the jurisdiction of your country of residence when it arrives there and you will need a prescription to legally import it (if laws even allow for that in your country).
The other main issue is the safety and purity of the product you receive. There is typically not any good manufacturing practices in place at the factories where these pills are produced, and no third party certifications are done to insure the authenticity and purity of the products.
Because of these issues, many people will turn to Adrafinil as a Modafinil alternative. In many countries, Adrafinil is an unregulated, unscheduled compound that does not require a prescription to buy (one exception is Australia, which labels Adrafinil as a Prescription Only medicine the same as Modafinil).
In the United States, Adrafinil has not been approved as a drug by the FDA. Therefore, it is legal to buy, own, and use Adrafinil in the US. However, FDA laws surrounding the sale, labeling, and distribution of compounds like Adrafinil make it difficult to sell for human consumption domestically.
There are many online nootropic vendors that ship to the United States (and many other locations worldwide) though, giving people a variety of options to choose from. It is important to do your research and buy from a vendor that sells products from a cGMP (current good manufacturing practice regulations) certified factory. Checking that they can provide third party Certificates of Analysis (CoA) for every batch is also recommended.
Reading user reviews can also give a good idea about the quality and reliability of a vendor. Additionally, you can contact a potential vendor and ask them any questions you may have about products. Reliable, trustworthy sources will be able to give you satisfactory answers to your questions.
One source for Adrafinil that we recommend is Absorb Health. As mentioned before, they sell 30-300mg Adrafinil capsules for $32.99. They also sell higher amounts of capsules up to 150 caps. As is usual with most vendors, buying in bulk does give some savings, with 150 capsules being $119.99, for a cost of 80 cents per pill, versus $1.10 per pill for the 30 capsule size.
Adrafinil Safety, Side Effects, & Liver Concerns
While this compound is considered to be generally safe and well-tolerated there are some safety concerns to be aware of.
For starters, Adrafinil can potentially place added strain on the heart, although less than what is seen with amphetamine use. This means that it is certainly not advisable for those with heart conditions or complications. Those with healthy hearts should probably not be terribly concerned about this, however.
Also, do not consider mixing this with other conventional stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin.
Headaches, dizziness, nausea, and stomach discomfort have been reported side effects of Adrafinil supplementation. It has also been known to elevate certain enzymes within the liver which can cause damage to the organ (potentially).
For this reason, most people do not use Adrafinil dosages on a daily basis but rather as needed for short periods. If you do decide to take this compound on a long-term basis, consider keeping track of your overall liver function and enzyme levels by having your doctor monitor your levels regularly.
Modafinil does not come with the same potential side effects for the liver which is why some people instead will buy this nootropic from online pharmacies where it is legal to ship around the world.
Most of the commonly associated Adrafinil side effects are very mild. These include anxiety, irritability, insomnia, and dry mouth. These are usually only present in those who have been exceeding the recommended dosage.
More serious side effects can include chest pains, heart palpitations, easy bruising, vomiting, and hallucinations.

- Focus longer, clear brain fog & feel more motivated
- Boost energy, alertnes & memory
- Contains 12 safe and natural nootropic ingredients
Tolerance
Even though Adrafinil (and its cousin Modafinil) carry much less risk of addiction than conventional stimulants, they should still be taken seriously and treated with respect. The problem is that the compound involves dopamine, which can be a very addictive chemical.
It is not advisable to use this more than 2 or 3 times per week to help promote wakefulness. If used frequently and over a long period of time it may result in tolerance, if not addiction.
One solution to this issue might be to cycle the compound on and off with other types of Nootropics in an Adrafinil stack.
How Adrafinil Relates To Other Nootropics
One of the ways in which Adrafinil and related compound are similar to Nootropics is that they seem to have interesting stimulant effects. However, this is not a stimulant in the same way as something like caffeine or amphetamines.
Many users have described this as a gentler type of effect, which results in much less anxiety, agitation, and insomnia than is commonly associated with more traditional stimulants. Of course Adrafinil also produces a number of very Nootropic-like effects outright. These relate to memory and cognition.
The fact that the mechanism of action is clearly not similar to most other Nootropics is what has researchers very interested in this class of compounds.
Before you buy Adrafinil online, it is a good idea to read about some user experience and reviews to understand more about the affects you may experience when taking this compound.
Other Nootropic Options
If Adrafinil does not seem to be the right nootropic for you either because of concerns with liver complications or simply because it has not given you the results that you want, then there are other nootropics out there that you can try. One popular choice is using one or a few of the Racetam class of compounds.
Piracetam was first developed in the 1960s. This compound is considered the first nootropic, as its creation and the effects it was seen to have caused its creator, Corneliu Giurgea to invent the term nootropic – from Greek origins, meaning “to turn the mind.”
Piracetam has been observed to have effects on Acetylcholine levels and activity in the brain and central nervous system. This neurotransmitter has effects on executive function, memory, and learning ability.
The derivatives of Piracetam – including Aniracetam, Oxiracetam, Pramiracetam, and Phenylpiracetam – are all more potent compounds that have been refined or chemically added to. They typically have additional effects beyond those of Piracetam as well.
For example, Phenylpiracetam is considered to be 50-60 times as powerful as Piracetam. It is said by users to have mental energy, learning capacity, focus, and concentration boosting effects.
These compounds come in a variety of formats, including Aniracetam capsules and Pramiracetam capsules, or Oxiracetam powder and Phenylpiracetam powder. Many people choose to stack a few Racetams together to get a specialized experience. You will need to do your research to choose the best format and strength of Racetam for your needs.
