Choline Alfoscerate is one of the most widely used supplements available today for improving your brain power and mental capacities.
Choline is a water-soluble nutrient that is similar to the B-vitamins. It is used in the body for maintaining cell membranes and as the main precursor to the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine.
Despite the benefits of choline being known within the scientific community for decades, it is believed that less than 10% of the population consistently gets the FDA recommended intake of this vital nutrient.
Choline Alfoscerate (also referred to as Alpha GPC) is considered to be one of the most effective Choline supplements available and has well-documented positive effect on cognition and memory.
How does Choline Alfoscerate work in the body and how can it increase the performance of your brain?

Choline Alfoscerate is actually found naturally in the human body to some degree and in the fatty acids of soy plants.
It features a chemical structure of [(2S)-2,3-Dihydroxypropyl] 2-trimethylazaniumylethyl phosphate and is also known as L-Alpha Glycerylphosphorylchoine.
The Choline Alfoscerate supplements used today are typically derived from soya phospholipids and are marketed under the name Alpha GPC.
There has been a lot of research into this nootropic supplement of late as it is being tested as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and stroke patients.
It is also used for non-medicinal reasons by people who want to increase their memory, improve analytical skills, and achieve greater focus and better attention spans.
How Choline Alfoscerate Works
As with other forms of Choline supplements, Choline Alfoscerate aids in the conversion and synthesis of important neurotransmitters within the brain.
Part of what makes this so effective as a source of Choline is that it has exceptionally high absorption into the bloodstream and easily crosses over into the central nervous system via the blood-brain barrier. Once engaged with the CNS, this supplement is a critical factor in the production of Acetylcholine.
Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter responsible for a number of cognitive activities due to its role in memory formation and information processing. It is made by combining choline with acetate in your neurons, but often a lack of choline can contribute to low uptake for this neurotransmitter.
Choline Alfoscerate is known to increase this uptake so that more Acetylcholine can be produced, which leads to better communication between neurons and higher levels of brain cell functioning.
Choline Alfoscerate Benefits
The primary benefits of Alpha GPC are broadly categorized as cognitive enhancements. This includes an improved overall memory and recall ability along with enhanced learning capacity.
You may find that you do not have to work as hard to remember even minute details and that you have greater access to your long-term memory storage. This is one of the reasons why people who take Choline Alfoscerate often say that it makes them feel smarter.
Some users also report having noticed lengthened attention spans and increased focus and concentration. It is also common to experience more energy and even higher levels of motivation and vitality.
Choline Alfoscerate also helps with maintenance of nerves, neurons, and overall brain health. The supplement bonds with an omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA. This is done through an enzyme process which also builds new cell membranes (for neurons) and promotes the expansion of nerve cells.
There is further evidence to suggest that this supplement also supports the production of human growth hormone in a healthy way. This makes Choline Alfoscerate quite attractive to elderly individuals since increased levels of HGH actually can make the body feel and act younger. Also, many body builders and weight lifters seek this benefit since HGH is an effective muscle building agent.
Choline Alfoscerate & Brain Aging
As the brain ages the neurons and neural receptors can atrophy and eventually cease to function or become very impaired. Over time, this may lead to significant declines in the function of neural receptors that are specifically related to memory.
It is believed that Choline Alfoscerate may help to stimulate neuronal regrowth. It also may reverse the atrophy of these elements and, as such, reverse (or at least slow down) cognitive decline associated with age.
This is also the same process that seizes the brain when people develop Alzheimer’s disease. Research is being conducted to determine if Alpha GPC supplements may be effective in treating the memory related effects of this disease and other forms of age-related cognitive decline.
While the research on Choline Alfoscerate has been very promising so far, more research, especially large-scale human trials needs to be done. At this time, Choline Alfoscerate is only available in the US as a health supplement, and it has not been approved by the FDA as a drug to prevent or treat any conditions.
Choline Alfoscerate Dosage & Use
As with all supplements, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor before beginning any new supplements. An appropriate, safe dosage is dependent on many factors including age, weight, and personal physiology, and your doctor will be able to help determine the best dosage for your needs.
The following dosage recommendations are general guidelines and your personal dosage may be different.
As far as dosing goes, a general range for Alpha GPC is between 300 and 1,200 mg per day. Most individuals take 500 mg of Choline Alfoscerate twice a day for improved mental function. It is more effective when administrations are split into smaller doses throughout the day, although it may be taken all at once in the morning.
For most people it also goes very well with other Nootropic supplements, helping to potentiate the effects of many of the Racetams and others.
If you are interested in increasing your brain power, memory, and mental capacities, try adding Choline Alfoscerate to your daily nutrition routine and see if it is right for your needs.

I just bought ALPHA-GPC / Choline Alfoscerate 600 mg (300 mg elemental) sold here, in the States, as a dietary supplement. In Europe there is a medication called Gliatilin (produced in Italy) that is Choline Alfoscerate 400 mg. Is this the same ingredient? Could Gliatilin be replaced by ALPHA-GPC?
