Interested in using a CILTEP stack to improve the performance of your memory?
The CILTEP stack theory originated in 2011 via an online collaboration of dedicated neurohackers. Since its inception, it continues to attract attention and dedicated followers.
Over time, through a series of lengthy discussions, augmented by anecdotal reports of self-experimentation, it has evolved.
The idea is to formulate a stack capable of chemically inducing a process known as long-term potentiation (LTP) which is known to boost memory formation, learning ability and mental endurance. If it proves to be effective and safe, the CILTEP regimen could also prove beneficial in the treatment of diseases disrupting cognitive function such as Alzheimer’s.
CILTEP stands for “chemically induced long-term potentiation”. Long Term Potentiation is the process by which memories are stored in your brain as connections between neurons.
The theory behind this stack is that using certain supplements, you can “hack your brain” to artificially induce LTP and thereby improve the rate at which new memories are formed. This

Studies show that LTP, when it was induced through high-frequency stimulation, played an important role in synaptic plasticity.
The process of LTP works by enhancing the signal which is transmitted between two neurons. It does this by simultaneously stimulating both the pre- and the postsynaptic compartments.
Through this method, LTP increases overall synaptic strength while also increasing the postsynaptic response to stimuli. The effect of this dual enhancement creates a direct boost in memory formation and one’s ability to learn.
To accomplish this task, the CILTEP stack utilizes two primary supplements: a PDE-4 inhibitor and a cAMP booster. These two components work together on raising cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) concentrations.
cAMP is an important intracellular signal carrier needed in order for cells to respond properly to hormones and other signals. By increasing its concentration in the brain, you may be able to heighten neural activity, resulting in more synapses or connections between the neurons being generated.
The first supplement, a PDE-4 inhibitor, is used to block an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) which is known to deplete cAMP levels. Typically, Artichoke Extract is used for this purpose. Then, to increase cAMP concentrations, the second supplement works to elevate cAMP levels overall.
Combining the two creates an environment with increased cAMP concentration levels overall along with inhibited cAMP depletion. Forskolin from the Coleus Forskohlii plant makes for an ideal cAMP increaser. When taking Forskolin with Artichoke extract, theoretically this is a state of “chemically induced long term potentiation”.
Some people choose to finish the stack off with a dopamine precursor. Some have reported experiencing fatigue after taking the CILTEP regimen for an extended period of time. It is thought the rate of dopamine synthesis is elevated during chemical induction of LTP, thereby necessitating dopamine support. Adding a dopamine precursor, like phenylalanine or tyrosine has worked to offset this occurrence for some users.

Benefits
The most frequently reported benefits related to the CILTEP stack are enhanced learning ability and increased short- and long-term memory function. Some users report increased mood and motivation levels.
This combination, taken together, can offer a noticeable improvement in overall cognitive function. Test materials become easier to digest and recall, and dense reading matter is easier to navigate and understand.
Some people report being able to easily recall, at a future date, everything they learn, hear or experience. Memory retention may become easier and require less effort. Improvement and accuracy in memory recall may seem more natural and enhanced. Some people have reported being able to gain a firm grasp of difficult subjects with more ease and less stress.
CILTEP Stack Dosage
Actual dosages will vary depending on supplements selected for use in your CILTEP Stack. One current working guideline, using the examples mentioned earlier is 5 – 20 mg of Forskolin (or 200 mg of 10% Forskohlii Extract) and 500 – 900 mg of artichoke extract.
This dosage is not to exceed 1 gm per day and you may want to leave one day between taking the stack. You should start with a smaller dosage at first before increasing to the full amount. Other PDE-4 inhibitors such as quercetin and hesperidin have been attempted but with poor results by most people.
Side Effects
Side effects of these supplements can be nuanced and varied. Be aware of possible drug interactions if you are taking medications. Artichoke extract may cause gallstones.
Forskolin should be purchased in the highest potency extract available because the non-active plant matter in the supplement can increase liver enzymes. Using forskolin at the lowest dose possible, preferably 5 mg, is recommended.
Some people have reported fatigue, over time, at the 15 mg per day dosage. Those using anticoagulants and antihypertensive medications should use forskolin with caution.
Some people experience fatigue with the CILTEP regimen. If fatigue is suspected to be due to dopamine depletion, the addition of a dopamine precursor may be desired. One that has been reported to be successful is phenylalanine taken at 1500 mg per day or tyrosine at 1000 mg per day.
This regimen has been shown to greatly enhance the effects of stimulants. If taking a stimulant in conjunction with this stack, it is recommended to begin at 25% of normal dosage and gradually work up. One stimulant that you might want to consider is Adrafinil, but research this thoroughly before you begin using it.
CILTEP Review
The CILTEP stack is a natural nootropic regimen that produces overall cognitive enhancement in many users. Specifically it has been reported to enhance memory formation coupled with better memory retention, recall and ease. It is important to bear in mind the theoretical and experimental nature of this stack at the present time.
Artichoke extract, alone, is known to provide many cognitive benefits, while combining it with forskolin may allow the user to chemically induce the effects of long-term potentiation. This potent combination has not been studied and remains unproven except by anecdotal evidence at this time.
Activating both the pre- and postsynaptic action, this stack works by simultaneously increasing synaptic strength while, at the same time, increasing the postsynaptic response to stimuli. Individuals who are aware of potential side effects of the supplements they select and who do not exceed the recommended dosage may expect the benefits described using the CILTEP regimen.
