The inositol group has long been considered to be a member of the B-complex vitamin group: vitamin B8. It displays traits that are very similar to vitamins, and it is known to be essential for life. However, unlike essential vitamins, our bodies are able to synthesize it in moderate amounts.
Different forms of inositol are manufactured via different actions and constituents. Because we are able to produce inositol ourselves, there is controversy concerning calling it a vitamin.
Prevalent forms of inositol, like myo inositol (MYO), are readily found throughout nature in plants and animals. That makes them easy to come by as they are available in numerous food choices including green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, fruits and more.
However, D-chiro inositol is not so readily found in natural food sources. D-chiro is believed to be synthesized via epimerase using myo inositol, and only when it is necessary for performing many potential functions which are yet to be discovered in clinical trials.
There are only a few food sources known to contain D-chiro inositol, and then it is only present in minute amounts. Those foods are buckwheat kernels, the leaves of fig trees and some varieties of melons.
Given that most people are not inclined to consume abundant amounts of those foods, the other option is to take a D-chiro inositol supplement. It is recommended to be taken with myo inositol at a 40:1 MYO/DCI ratio.
