Detoxified iodine is also called nascent, atomic and/or transformative nano-colloidal iodine. It is also called Atomidine or Detoxadine.
This type of iodine supplement is electromagnetically charged and transmuted into the atomic state. It is purported to be both non-toxic and highly bioavailable.
Iodine is important for maintaining metabolic homeostasis, cardiovascular health, immune system function and much more. It is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism, nervous and muscle tissue function, weight management and cellular growth.
Iodine is critical for the normal function of the thyroid gland. It along with the amino acid tyrosine is required to synthesize T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. These hormones activate catabolic processes that generate ATP – the primary energy currency in our cells. [1]
People use detoxified iodine to support a positive mood, energy levels, mental performance, weight loss, and healthy nails, skin and hair.
This source of iodine is believed to be better absorbed and used within the body, although there are no comparative studies available to evaluate this claim.

- Important for thyroid hormones & metabolism
- Supports mental function & immunity
- Essential nutrient with multiple roles in the body
What is Detoxified Iodine?
Transformative Nano-Colloidal Detoxified Iodine is a supplemental of the trace mineral, iodine.
This highly bioavailable formulation of the essential dietary mineral iodine is recommended by the “Father of Holistic Medicine,” Edgar Cayce.
According to Dr. Edward Group III, detoxified (nascent) iodine is manufactured “by subjection of a 1% tincture of iodine to a high electromagnetic field for a given time in order to produce the nascent iodine state.” [2]
The process of making detoxified iodine involves transmuting raw or natural iodine into a non-toxic, atomic state. Edgar Cayce believed this type of transmuted iodine could be easily recognized and utilized by the body.
According to one manufacturer, ” Our iodine is reduced to a 1% concentration in 100% ethyl alcohol and electro-magnetically transmuted (while being suspended in a wet bath containing a mild acid solution) into the Atomic state. From there it is bottled in 1/2 oz. or 1 oz. (amber) dropper bottles and unless otherwise indicated.”
Cayce asserted that the natural vibratory state of atomic iodine would be able to normalize thyroid function and hormonal/glandular disorders. Cayce also believed that detoxified iodine would eliminate all types of viruses, fungi and bacteria.
The electromagnetic charge and atomic state of the detoxified iodine is purported to improve its absoprtion in the body.
The website TrueHealthFacts.com reports that, “When you put a drop into water it disperses so fast it looks as though it vanishes. That is why it is so bio-available in the body.”
According to Dr. Group, detoxified iodine is very similar to the form of this nutrient that acts as the precursor of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Dr. Group says, because of this, it is readily and easily used by numerous tissues and organs in the body.
The electromagnetic charge of detoxified iodine dissipates within two or three hours. It is generally recommended to take detoxified iodine, diluted in a glass of purified water, three or four times daily when the stomach is empty. [2]
In theory, providing adequate and consistent iodine in the blood helps to ensure that the thyroid can function optimally. When the thyroid works efficiently, hormonal balance is improved throughout all systems of the body.
Warning: Edgar Cayce’s Detoxified Iodine
According to Dr. Phil Thomas, for decades, many people have been buying iodine supplements that they thought were manufactured in accordance with Edgar Cayce’s recommendations, but are not.
He states that some iodine supplements that claim to be “detoxified” may actually contain three times the amount of chlorine as they do iodine.
In his article, “Iodine: the once a century element,” Dr. Thomas stated:
“Iodine-trichloride is one iodine bonded with three chlorine in a lab. This means that with every drop of iodine ingested you are also consuming three times as much chlorine. Chlorine is definitely not something you’d want to take internally, and certainly not something Mr. Cayce ever recommended.” [3]
Dr. Thomas warns to be careful that any detoxified iodine supplement you may be considering does not contain iodine trichloride. Like bromine, fluorine and astatine, chlorine is a toxic halogen that competes with iodine for uptake into thyroid.
Detoxified Iodine Benefits
If you are deficient in iodine, supplementing with this mineral may help to improve your health and alleviate symptoms of deficiency. Inadequate levels of this mineral in the diet are associated with the following:
- Tiredness or mental slowness
- Developmental issues
- Hypothyroidism
- Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goitre)
- Fertility issues
- Depression or low mood
- Puffiness of the face
- Coarse hair or hair loss
- Brittle nails and dry skin
- Weak or slower heart rate
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Declining cognitive function
Even if you get enough iodine in your diet to meet the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), there may be situations in which increasing your intake could have additive health benefits.
People take iodine to support detoxification pathways, protein synthesis, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, normal reproductive function, bone growth, anti-aging effects and for immune function
According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database (NMCD), iodine supplements are used orally for the following:
- Hyperthyroidism, enlarged thyroid (goiter) and thyroid storm;
- Radiation emergency associated with radioactive iodides;
- Fibrocystic breast disease and preventing breast cancer;
- A fungal infection called sporotrichosis;
- Cardiovascular disease;
- As an expectorant;
- Ocular disease;
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome;
- Fibromyalgia;
- Depression and Mood Disorders;
NMCD states that oral iodine supplements are also used for weight loss, diabetes, Additionally, iodine is used topically for improving skin, nail and hair health; it is also used for purifying nonpotable water. [4]
While there are many purported health benefits associated with iodine supplementation, not all of them are supported by research. The FDA has not approved Detoxified Iodine as a drug for the treatment of any medical conditions.
Dosages and How to Take
The US RDA for iodine is 150 mcg daily. Note that this dosage is in micrograms and not milligrams; it takes one thousand micrograms to equal one milligram (mg).
The UL (upper tolerable limit) for iodine is 1,100 mcg (1.1 mg). This is the maximum amount that the FDA recommends consuming in the diet per day to avoid negative effects.
Some health practitioners, like Dr. David Brownstein and Dr. Mark Sircus, recommend higher doses, especially in those suffering from serious health conditions.
In Japan, the average diet provides about 12.5 mg of iodine each day. Research has shown that doses that are considerably higher than the US RDA are not associated with adverse health effects.
Some doctors recommended doses as high as 50 mg daily in certain patients with severe health problems. [5]
Dosages of this amount should only be taken under medical supervision. Taking too much of certain forms of iodine can result in dangerous side effects and signs of toxicity.
Detoxified iodine supplements typically provide 200 – 220 mcg of this active ingredient per drop. There are other forms of this supplement that provide significantly higher doses. Because this form has higher oral bioavailability, a smaller dosage is required.
One manufacturer of a 1% Iodine Crystals in Ethyl Alcohol solution recommends taking 1 drop of the liquid in 3 to 6 oz of water on the first day. They recommend increasing the serving size by 1 drop per day for 5 days., taking a 2-day break, and repeating the same dosage protocol for 5 days.
They say that after 3 weeks of this on/off cycling, a daily dosage of 5 drops can be maintained or increased to 8-10 or 12-15 drops per day. They recommend titrating the dosage slowly to avoid potential discomfort.
This manufacturer recommends consuming it between “8 am to 12 noon on an empty stomach 30 minutes before or 1 hour after meals, medications and/or supplements.” They say that using it after 4 PM could cause energy levels to increase too much and make it hard to fall asleep at night
You should ask a doctor about the best dosage of detoxified iodine for your health needs and goals. Be sure to tell the doctor about existing health conditions you have, and about all the medications and supplements you use regularly.
