DIM-plus is a dietary supplement produced and marketed by the company Nature’s Way.
According to customer reviews of DIM-plus, this supplement can help improve moods, bloating, acne, heavy periods and other symptoms associated with excess estrogen levels.
DIM stands for diindolylmethane, which is one of the main ingredients in DIM-plus. The supplement is used to improve estrogen metabolism in both men and women.
DIM-plus also contains vitamin E, DIM, phosphatidlycholine as well as spinach, cabbage and broccoli powder. These ingredients are said to help improve the absorption of DIM. DIM-plus does not contain as high a dose of DIM as some other supplements.
Every two vegetable-based capsules contain 100 mg of BioResponse DIM, a patented complex that is designed to enhance DIM’s bioavailability. However, this complex only contains 25% DIM, which means each recommended dose contains 25 mg of DIM.
Acording to the manufacturer, “The bioavailability of DIM-plus is superior to regular diindolylmethane and its unstable precursor, indole-3-carbinol (I3C). With DIM-plus you are assured a stabilized and consistent dose of diindolylmethane.”

- Aids healthy hormone balance for men & women
- Mitigates some effects of excess estrogen
- Anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory benefits
DIM-plus Uses
Related Topics
DIM-plus is generally used to improve estrogen metabolism and conditions related to high estrogen, such as uterine fibroids, acne, weight loss, moodiness, PMS symptoms, cervical dysplasia and a number of other estrogen-related conditions.
What is DIM?
DIM is a metabolite of indole-3-carbinol, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. When indole-3-carbinol is exposed to the acid contained in the human stomach, it is broken down into DIM and indolycarbazole.
Indole-3-carbinol is not a bioactive compound and would have no effect if it were not metabolized into these two bioactive constituents.
I3C has attracted considerable scientific interest as a possible prevention for breast cancer. The National Institutes of Health in the United States has funded further clinical study into the use of I3C for breast cancer prevention.
DIM has received comparatively less scientific attention than I3C. There is evidence that DIM supplements like DIM-plus help improve estrogen metabolism, but these observations have been largely made in animal and laboratory experiments.
More research is needed to establish the therapeutic effect of DIM-plus on humans.
DIM-plus and Estrogen
DIM-plus is most frequently taken to combat signs of estrogen dominance in both men and women. It is used to improve the hormone balance in the body and to promote the breakdown of so-called “bad” forms of estrogen metabolites.
Estrogen does not refer to a single hormone but a group of hormones that share similar characteristics. The three main estrogen hormones are estadiol, estriol and estrone and the dominance of these respective hormones will vary over the course of a woman’s life.
For instance, estradiol is common during child-bearing years whereas there is more estrone after menopause.
In general, it is best for estrogens to be used and then removed from the body. High levels of circulating estrogen can lead to a number of conditions, including weight gain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), gallstones, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and varicose veins.
In addition, high estrogen or high levels of estrogen metabolites have been connected to increased risk of breast, uterine and prostate cancer.
Estrogens are normally metabolized by the liver and then excreted in urine or feces. To ensure good estrogen metabolism it is important to support the health of your liver, get enough exercise and eat a healthy, high-fiber diet to maintain health digestion and make sure estrogen can be excreted.
DIM-plus and Estrogen Metabolism
DIM-plus may support estrogen metabolism by altering the breakdown of the hormone.
For instance, estradiol is metabolized into one of several different forms of estrogen, including 2-hyrdoxyestadiol and 16-hydroxyestradiol. 2-hydroxyestradiol is considered to have a protective effect on the body whereas 16-hyroxyestradiol has been implicated in the development of cancer.
DIM has been observed to increase the production of 2-hydroxyestradiol and reduce the production of 16-hydroxyestradiol by affecting enzymes involved in estrogen metabolism. It has also been observed to reduce the general level of estrogen in the body.
DIM-plus User Reviews
Although no specific clinical evidence yet exists to validate the claims, reviews of DIM-plus suggest users have had success treating uterine fibroids, acne, weight loss, moodiness and PMS with DIM-plus.
DIM is used to treat the symptoms of moderate-to-severe PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Users report reduced irritability, mood swings, hot flashes, tension, aggression, bloating, vaginal dryness and/or painful breasts.
The effectiveness of DIM for PMS may be complemented by combining these supplements with a low-fat, high-fiber diet. In addition, some users report improvements in PMS symptoms when DIM is combined with vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and certain herbal remedies, such as chaste berry extract.
Can Men Use DIM-plus?
Estrogen and estrogen receptors are found in both men and women. In fact, estrogens are very common across many species, ranging from insects to mammals.
The quantity of estrogen differs between males and females, but males are still affected by high estrogen levels.
DIM-plus is sometimes taken by men who are experiencing excess estrogen, which is particularly common as men enter their middle-aged and elderly years.
Testosterone begins to naturally decline with age and as a result some men experience a condition called estrogen dominance, meaning the balance between estrogen and testosterone is off.
When a man is estrogen dominant, he may experience:
- low sex drive;
- erectile dysfunction (ED);
- weight gain;
- muscle loss and weakness;
- gynecomastia (breast development);
- androgenic alopecia (loss of hair).
DIM Plus Reviews for Prostate Health
Testimonies from DIM-plus reviews indicate DIM may help mitigate symptoms of enlarged prostate. DIM is also taken to help prevent benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate, which puts pressure on the urethra and can make urination difficult.
The prostate can enlarge as men age and their hormone levels alter. DIM is sometimes used by men to help support health hormone levels and reduce the risk of developing conditions like BPH.
DIM-plus Side Effects
There have been few long-term human studies involving DIM and its side effects remain poorly defined.
The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates DIM as “Likely Safe” when taken in amounts typically found in food (between 2 and 24 mg/day). It is rated as “Possibly Safe” for periods of up to 12 weeks (the longest available clinical study). In addition, it is rated “Possibly Unsafe” in large doses (600 mg/day).
DIM-plus may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. Do not take DIM if you have a hormone-sensitive health condition.
Also, do not use DIM-plus supplements if you are taking medication for any estrogen-based condition, medications for autoimmune diseases, diuretics or cytochrome P450 substrate drugs.
Do not take DIM if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, breastfeeding or taking birth control.
Speak with your doctor before taking Nature’s Way DIM-plus or any DIM supplement to review the possible side effects and drug interactions and make sure the supplement is safe for you.
