Dimethylaminoethanol – also known as DMAE – is a primary alcohol that can promote health and brain function. We find this compound in small quantities in certain types of fish, but taking a supplement can greatly increase levels of it available to use in the body.
The role of DMAE supplements in the body is quite varied and this nutrient is attributed with benefits ranging from healthier, younger skin to increased energy levels to better memory and focus.
As a source of choline, taking DMAE can increase acetylcholine levels in the brain, help to repair damaged cell membranes and neurons, protect skin from wrinkling and other forms of damage and help to remove toxins that build up in the body.

Who Should Use DMAE Supplements?
Related Topics
This leads us to the basic question of who should use this supplement. First of all, anyone who is interested in improving their memory, learning capacity, attention span, focus and concentration, or speed cognition can benefit from DMAE.
Students are frequent users of this supplement, but so are elderly people and professionals who need to keep their memory sharp.
Taking DMAE supplements can also help anyone who is concerned about the appearance of their skin. It is said to both visibly firm the skin, but also removes blemishes, age spots and other imperfections on the surface of the skin.
These results can occur through oral use of DMAE capsules, but it is also common to find this as an ingredient in skin creams for topical application.
There have even been studies that show using DMAE bitartrate powder can help people diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, depression and more. Some studies show that it help treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
There are also a number of athlete and bodybuilders who use this supplement to improve their training, energy levels and sports or athletic performance.
What Does DMAE Do?
Since DMAE acts a precursor of Choline – a nutrient needed to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine – there are some positive benefits recorded from taking this supplement on brain performance.
DMAE reviews say that this natural compound increases memory formation and consolidation while also enhancing learning capacity, promoting a lengthened attention span and improved ability to concentrate and focus.
A number of users have said they take DMAE tablets to help them eliminate brain fog and feel more motivated and clear-minded.
DMAE has also been investigated for clinical uses. For example, there is evidence that it can be effective in treating the symptoms of issues ranging from ADHD to Age-Related Memory Loss to Borderline Emotional Disturbance.
Using DMAE supplements is thought to relieve general levels of stress and anxiety, along with treating symptoms of depression. Even in healthy individuals it can improve mood and lead to a feeling of overall well-being.
DMAE in a Nootropic stack
DMAE is often used with other nootropic supplements that can improve memory, mood and focus. It is common to stack Piracetam with DMAE bitartrate as a source of choline.
While there are now stronger recognized sources of choline (such as Centrophenoxine which is itself derived from DMAE), this stack does lead to the typical Racetam-Choline synergy that many users are looking for.
Are DMAE Supplements Safe?
Almost all of the studies into DMAE thus far have been relatively short term. This is something that concerns researchers slightly when discussing its overall safety, since the long-term effects are unclear at this point.
However, DMAE does appear to be very safe, especially when used properly. Taking larger doses than what is recommended may lead to rare side effects like stomach upset, irritable mood, confusion, drowsiness or elevated blood pressure.
Before starting to use DMAE, you should ask your doctor for advice on how to use it and whether it is an appropriate supplement for you.
The average DMAE supplement serving size contains between 300 mg and 1,200 mg of active ingredient. Most users will take this supplement in equally divided doses two times per day.
It can be used with or without food, though if you feel nausea after taking it, you should make sure to use it with food in the future. DMAE can be purchased in either a bulk powder form or as dietary supplement capsules for easy dosing.
