Draganon is a fat soluble compound that has a Racetamic chemical structure with a 2-pyrrolidinone nucleus.

Research Review
Draganon (Aniracetam) has been studied for its effects on patients with Alzheimer’s disease as well as in elderly persons showing signs of Age-Related Cognitive Decline.
In one study, Aniracetam was found to improve mental performance in elderly individuals diagnosed with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.
Dosages of 1500 mg per day of this nootropic drug were given for four or six months and were found to be more effective than a placebo for improving cognitive function.
Over the 6-month trial, study participants were examined across a battery of 18 tests designed to measure their brain function, memory, reasoning and ability to manipulate data.
At the conclusion of the trial, those given daily dosages of Aniracetam saw the greatest improvement in their performance and showed gains on 17 of the 18 tests administered.
This study found that Aniracetam was more effective than a 2400 mg per day dosage of Piracetam in 8 of the 18 tests administered. Results also showed that Aniracetam was well-tolerated with no serious side effects and no increase in hepatic liver enzyme levels. [1]
In a recent study published in 2011, use of generic Aniracetam was studied in patients with cognitive impairment, compared to those given a cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI) drug.
Cholinesterase inhibitors – like Galantamine (Reminyl ER) or Huperzine A – are often used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions affecting memory function.
They work by preventing the breakdown of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter once it has been released from a neuron. This results in increased activation of cholinergic receptors which are involved in memory and general cognition.
In this prospective, open label study, 276 patients diagnosed with cognitive disorders with a mean age of 71 years were enrolled. Patients were given either a placebo, aniracetam therapy on its own, cholinesterase inhibitor therapy on its own, or a combination of Aniracetam and ChEIs.
Patients were given validated neuropsychological tests at the start of the trial, and after three, six and twelve months of treatment.
The results of this study showed that the group given Aniracetam exhibited significantly better mental performance after 6 months of therapy and improve functionality after 3 months. This group also experienced improved measures of emotional state.
The researchers stated that Aniracetam preserved results across all neuropsychological parameters for the 12 months during the study treatment period and exerted a beneficial effect on mood.
They concluded, “Aniracetam (a nootropic compound with glutamatergic activity and neuroprotective potential) is a promising option for patients with cognitive deficit of mild severity.”
While Draganon is still used in some European countries to address dementia, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, it has not been approved as a therapeutic agent in the United States.
