Forskolin Trim is marketed as an all-natural weight loss and fat burner products. Using supplements that contain forskolin may help break down stored fats, promote appetite control and greater energy levels as well as support muscle growth.
According to the manufacturer, “The ancient medicinal plant Coleus forskohlii is the source of the compound forskolin which possesses unique biological activity. The basic mechanism of action of forskolin is the activation of an enzyme, adenylate cyclase, which increases cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in cells.”
Forty-five percent of Forskolin Trim’s reviews on Amazon are five-star reviews. Just under one quarter of reviews are one-star reviews.
In a number of MaritzMayer Forskolin Trim Reviews, commenters noted that a large number of the positive reviews had shown up on the same day and that they were related to an airing of the Dr. Oz episode about forskolin. It is unclear whether these reviews are fake or are authentic.
Many positive reviewers said that Forskolin Trim helped them lose weight without making other lifestyle changes. A number reported increased levels of energy and reduced hunger cravings,.
The most common complaint among one-star reviewers was that the product was ineffective and did not result in weight loss or belly fat loss. A few verified reviewers stated that they experienced upset stomach, bloating or other gastrointestinal issues after taking the supplement.
Note that there are many different products with similar names. Forskolin Ultratrim 350, Forskolin Ultra Trim, Trim 250 Forskolin, SlimTrim 2000, Forskolin Trim Diet, and Nature’s Slim Forskolin Trim are all different supplements from the one being reviewed in this article.
Background
There is research to suggest that use of supplements like Forskolin Trim can promote fat loss. However, this particular product contains a relatively low dose and may not be as effective as some other supplement stacks.
In 1970, researchers discovered that forskolin, the active substance in the roots of the coleus plant, might be able to stimulate the metabolism and support weight loss goals.
The researchers found that forskolin increased the release of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate). This compound triggers the release of fat from within fat cells so that the body can use it for energy.
On that evidence, scientists theorized that this herbal extract may stimulate fat loss and allow people to lose weight without having to make other lifestyle changes.
A 1982 study confirmed that forskolin increased cAMP accumulation, which, in higher concentrations, stimulated lipolysis, the process of fat being released from fat cells. It also increases thyroid activity, which plays a role in regulating metabolism and bodyweight.
A study that involved 50 female Wistar rats measured the effects of forskolin on obesity. The rats were divided into five groups:
- A group on a high fat diet.
- A group on a high fat diet supplemented with forskolin.
- A group on a high fat diet supplemented with rolipram, an antidepressant.
- A group that was given a high fat diet, supplemented with both rolipram and forskolin.
- A control group.
The animals that were fed forskolin had less weight gain than the control group or the group that was fed a high fat diet. They also found that the combination of forskolin and rolipram led to more weight loss than either treatment alone.
They concluded that the forskolin stimulated fat loss and kept the rats from gaining weight by increasing their cAMP levels.
Research Results
There have been two human studies on the effect of this plant for weight loss. One study involved a group of 30 obese men. Half were given 250 mg of 18% forskolin extract twice a day. The other half were given a placebo.
While there was no significant difference in body weight between the two groups, there were significant changes in both lean muscle mass and body fat. This suggests a body recomposition effect.
Men taking the supplement lost more body fat than the men in the placebo group. They also saw an increase in their levels of muscle mass. Participants taking forskolin saw their testosterone levels increase, as well.
The other human study on forskolin in humans involved a group of 23 moderately overweight females. Half of the women were given 250 mg of ForsLean brand forskolin extract, which contained 10% extract.
Women who took ForsLean consumed the same amount of food as the women who took a placebo. The participants who took ForsLean reported less fatigue and hunger. They did not have significant differences in either lean body mass or fat mass.
While many researchers do not support the idea that forskolin can help with human weight loss or fat loss, a number of people who take supplements for bodybuilding or for weight loss report anecdotal success with supplements.
On his medical TV show, Dr. Oz claims that forskolin helps stimulate the metabolism and reduce belly fat by increasing testosterone levels.
Some evidence suggests that this ingredient may be more effective when combined with artichoke extract. This is the synergistic combination used in the CILTEP stack.
Dosages & Side Effects
There is no standardized dosage of forskolin, however, it is typically taken in a dose of between 100 – 500 mg per day of Coleus Forskolhii extract. Products typically contain forskolin in either 10, 20 or 25% concentrations.
Each capsule of Forskolin Trim contains 125 mg of a 10% forskolin extract, yielding 12.5 mg of the active ingredient. The manufacturers recommend taking one capsule per day before a meal.
Other sources generally recommend higher dosages. Some natural health experts have suggested doses of 50 mg forskolin extract per day to promote weight loss results.
Researchers say that there are no significant side effects associated with this herb. However, some researchers expressed concern that there is not enough research to indicate whether it is safe to take forskolin long-term.
A number of Amazon reviewers make anecdotal reports of forskolin extract side effects. The most side effect reported is gastrointestinal issues.
One reviewer reported weight gain when taking Forskolin Trim. A handful of reviewers report leg pain or foot cramps.
