Forskolin extract is a dietary supplement that is produced from the Indian Coleus (Coleus Forskohlii) plant which has played an important role in Indian traditional medicine for thousands of years.
The plant itself is a member of the mint family and grows in the subtropical areas of India, Burma, and Thailand.
The active ingredient in Coleus Forskohlii plants is the labdane diterpene known as Forskolin. Diterpenes are compounds which are similar to retinol, retinal, and phytol, and are known to be both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
Forskolin is known to activate something called adenylate cyclase, which is an enzyme involved in the regulation of many different cellular functions. This enzyme is derived from ATP and used for signal transduction in many different organisms.
Forskolin extract supplements may cause an increase in cAMP levels which may promote weight loss and increase memory formation and retention, especially when used in a CILTEP Stack with Artichoke Extract.

Forskolin Effects
Related Topics
The main method of action for Forskolin extract supplements is by the activation of the enzyme adenylate cyclase by the diterpene derivatives it contains.
This enzyme is also activated by lipolytic hormones such as Epinephrine and Adrenaline. However, Forskolin does not carry the same central nervous system effects as this stimulatory hormones.
In other words, Forskolin works by essentially bypassing the steps associated with unwanted side effects like nervousness and restlessness. As this enzyme is activated, it converts into something known as cAMP. This, in turn, increases levels of a protein called kinase and also hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL).
This supplement also is thought to work as a vasodilator, helping to open up blood passages. This can increase blood flow to the brain, resulting in better nutrient and oxygen delivery to your brain cells.
As a result, your neurons may fire more actively and cell maintenance may be improved. Forskolin is also known to act as a thyroid stimulant and acts in a fashion similar to a number of conventional asthma treatments. The cAMP compound also serves to relax the muscles around the bronchial tubes which normally helps to make breathing easier.
Forskolin Benefits
Forskolin is used as a nootropic in something called the CILTEP Stack (Chemically Induced Long-Term Potentiation Stack). This supplement stack uses Forskolin as a cAMP booster along with Artichoke Extract as a PDE-4 inhibitor.
Artichoke Extract prevents the breakdown of excessive cAMP, thereby allowing the user to increase normal levels of cAMP in the brain. The result is heightened memory performance, especially in terms of new information retention.
Many individuals say that using Forskolin in this regard can give them significantly better memory function for studying and other mentally demanding tasks. Taking Forskolin may aid in learning capacity, reasoning processes, accessing stored memory and may improve mental fluidity.
Studies have also found Forskolin to be beneficial for obesity and weight loss. In one study, 30 overweight or obese men using Forskolin were observed to achieve a greater decrease in body fat and greater increase in lean body mass than those in the placebo group. Incidentally, the treatment group also experienced a significant increase in bone mass.
A 2006 study also reports the benefits of Forskolin with treating and fending off asthma attacks. The study found that users of this supplement had asthma attacks much less frequently than non-users. Also, during the attacks which did occur, the severity was rated as significantly less with easier breathing.
Although there is very little scientific evidence backing the claim, there are some people who feel Forskolin actually is helpful in the treatment of glaucoma. A small study showed that it may help to relieve pressure in the eyes that is often associated with the disease.
Another potential use of this supplement is in the treatment of certain forms of cardiovascular disease. There have been a few studies showing that Forskolin can help to improve heart function. People with idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy may be good candidates for this type of treatment.
Research on Forskolin has been promising so far, however it is limited, and more research is still needed, especially large-scale human trials. At this time, Forskolin is available as a health supplement only, and the FDA has not approved Forskolin as a drug to prevent or treat any conditions.
Forskolin Dosage
Personal dosage depends on many different factors, and it is always recommended that you speak with your doctor to determine the best dosage for your needs. The below dosage recommendations are general guidelines only, and your personal dosage may be different.
The dosage of many Forskolin supplements can vary considerably. Generally, you want to consider only those of higher quality which means that they should contain 10 to 20 percent Forskolin extract. Anything less is not worth your money since there is probably too little of the active ingredient to really be very effective.
The typical dosage range is between 25 and 60 mg per day. This is normally divided between 2 or 3 equal administrations. Many users suggest that 50-60 mg is the ideal range for serious nootropic effects. It may also be better to take your Forskolin dosage at night, since it does make some people tired.
For the best results, you should be combining this supplement with 500 to 900 mg of artichoke extract per day.
Forskolin Side Effects
Is Forskolin safe to use? Forskolin is generally regarded as safe, however conclusive evidence regarding the safety profile for Forskolin is limited because there have been relatively few tests and studies on it.
Although most of the side effects reported have been mild, there are some events to watch out for. This includes flushing and low blood pressure when taken through an IV; upper respiratory tract infection, cough, tremor, and restlessness when inhaled; headaches; and increased heart rate.
There are also certain people who should avoid taking Forskolin supplements under all conditions. This includes people using blood thinners or anti-platelet medications.
There are also a number of high blood pressure drugs that may have some interactions with Forskolin. These include things like beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, Clonidine, Hydralazine. This supplement should also be avoided by those who have kidney disease, as well as pregnant or breast feeding women.
Forskolin Review
While Forskolin does not have as much history of use in the nootropic community compared to Racetams and other memory boosters, there are a lot of individuals who attest to its effectiveness.
If you are interested in trying the CILTEP stack, then you may want to speak to your doctor to make sure that Forskolin is safe for you to use. You can purchase high quality Coleus forskohlii extract online and then take it on its own or combine it with an Artichoke Extract powder.
If you would prefer to try a cognitive enhancement supplement with more research behind it, consider instead using a Racetam stack with Piracetam or Aniracetam alongside Alpha GPC or Citicoline. These combinations have a longer history of use backed up by thousands of positive user reviews online.

I’ve been taking forskolin for a little over a week and my question is does forskolin cause problems with your kindeys ? I am also taking amlodapine and lasix for my blood pressure and I take a Dailey women’s vitamin and I have had some pain in my left kidney. In any of the research has there been any kind of studies to support this?
Deborah, I’m not a doctor but I’m reading about forskolin for weight loss. You need to talk to your doctor BEFORE you take another dose of forskolin! Forskolin should not be taken with blood pressure medications since forskolin lowers blood pressure. In reading about forskolin, I saw something in reference to kidney issues.Forskolin may not be something you can take with your currant medical issues. Hope this helped!
I recently started taking forskolin. I also take catapress for blood pressure. Should I avoid using this medication?
Hi Janelle – Thanks for your message!
Based on my quick search online there have been no studies examining interactions between Forskolin and Catapress that I can refer you to. It would be best to speak to your physician to determine whether these two products can be used safely together.
I just started taking forskolin several days ago and notice I’m having more frequent and looser bowel movements. Is this because of the purported increased metabolic changes?
Forskolin. It looked all good until I got to low blood pressure…..I was told a few years ago by a doctor that I have abnormally low blood pressure…..is it an advisable supplement?
I have experienced a similar issue as indicated above – looser and more frequent bowel movements. Should I stop using the product or is this to be expected?
[email protected]—yes, i have frequent bowel movements and real loose. Should I STOP USING ULTRA TRIM FORKOLIN? REPLY TO ME REAL SOON.
How long can one take Forskolin?
I am also worry about the Forskolin not reacting well with my blood pressure medication… Anyone with a experience about that?
Thanks
I started taking Forskolin about three days ago. The first day I had loose bowel motions and today I have blood in my urine.
I have stopped taking Forskolin as the risk to my health is too high.
I have been taking this (although not every day) for a little over three weeks. I have now stopped altogether because of the effect on my bowels, which was very dramatic! Sorry to be so ‘graphic’, but this turned my bowel movements to liquid and, whenever I have taken the capsules, have suffered gastric pain.
what is the exact age group of people who can use this medicine?
Must be an adult or teenager. There are a few side effects heart burn, lowers your blood pressure, if you take high blood pressure medicine ask your doctor if you can use it.
Wow, that was some great information. I knew Forskolin was a great product. I’ve been taking it since 2001 with Guggulsterone (Brown Resin) and I dropped weight. I love this supplement. It works great.
I also started taking Forskolin. 4 days ago.
Also wanting to lose a few pounds.
I purchased 2 different brands.
Cardiovascular Research Ltd from the vitamins store-it has 10% – 250 mg.
I took first day and did notice slight change in stools. A little looser. 2nd day took the same brand in a.m. And took second brand in evening.
Second brand was from California products. It has 20%-250mg.
Again stools not so bad.
3rd day switched to California products A.M. and P.M and noticed very loose stools. Almost by evening more like run to the bathroom stools. Also stomach cramped on one side.
Fourth day went back to weaker brand Cardiovascular Research ltd.
Have not had loose bowl movement all day.
But also found today was also first day not craving food. Really not even hungry at all. Strange
Only ate one meal at early dinner.
I do have some sort of mild reaction though.
Anyone one else experience itching? I notice I feel itchy on my head , neck, back etc.
Well I’m wondering if it has any effect with my other prescription drugs or not.
I take pramapexal for restless leg. And tramadol for back pain.
I’d like to stick it out but with caution of course.
I have lower blood pressure about 110/70. Minimum. Exercise- walking 30 min and every other day do exercise video- Zumba or ball exercise tape for 45 min.
Please reply.
Thank you,
Hi Jewel,
According to the Natural Medicines Databse, there is not a recorded interaction between Forskolin and Pramapexal or Tramadol, but this does not mean that it might not affect how these medications work. You should speak to your prescribing doctor to determine if this combination is safe for you.
Forskolin has been shown to lower blood pressure in some studies.
Here is what the Natural Medicine’s Database says with regards to side effects:
Coleus is generally regarded as safe, as very few reports have documented adverse effects; however, only a few short-term trials have assessed its safety in a small sample size of patients. No long-term safety data were found in the available literature search. Inhalation of forskolin may cause sore throat, upper respiratory tract irritation, mild to moderate cough, tremor, or restlessness.”
do not mix coleus with Tramadol. Coleus acts on the CNS much like an on both GABA and Serotonin pathways and so does Tramadol. You should not mix the two, unless you to pull unintended Whitney effect?
Bonjour Monsieur,
martine
HOLA !!! MIRA MI PREGUNTA ES LA SIGUIENTE : ¿ COMO SE DEBE TOMAR LA FORSKOLINA?, ES DECIR ANTES DE UNA COMIDA DESPUÉS DE LA COMIDA? SI SE HACE ACTIVIDAD FISICA COMO SE DEBE TOMAR SI ANTES O DESPUES DE LA ACTIVIDAD? GRACIAS
tengo la misma pregunta se toma antes de los alimentos o que ?
I have been takingForskolin for several months, I really like it energy, appetite, Blood pressure good.
However I have developed a Bacteria in my Bladder and on antibiotics, what is your take on this? I hope to continue. Thanks for your opinion.
Hello, my name is Maria and I also talk about forskolin. It is new for me so I am reading a lot of this product in web sites for more information. I have a web called laforskolina and I will be very grateful if you can tell me some advice about this topic.
Thank you very much for this post
Bye Bye
Got it this week and about to be day 3 tomorrow. No complaints yet and haven’t had any cravings. Looking forward to end my week to see if there is any changes. :)
i have hadd headachs and very tired with muscel pain is this a side effect?andy body else with this problem taking forkayskolin 125 mg.
Okay so me and my daughter are wanting to try losing some weight but she’s only 16. We don’t really have time to work out and I’d never resort to giving my child any medication or vitamin for her to lose weight but I’ve heard good things about Forskolin and I just wonder if it would be safe for both me and my 16 year old daughter
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for your comment. Forskolin does have some positive effects for weight loss, but it has not been studied as a dietary supplement in individuals under 18. While supplements like Forskolin can be used to support a weight loss program, the greatest results will come from dietary changes and increased activity.
I always give up after a week or two when trying a new supplement, I would rather not give up on this seeing as how I’ve witnessed people have good results. I’ve been taking Forskolin for a week now and have had a headache every single day but the first day. Has anybody had this reaction? If so is there any thing I can do or take to try and get this to stop? Anybody have any good results?
Thanx!
Anybody taking foreskolin while on calcium channel blockers? I take 180mg Cardizem CD. What are the side effects?
Thanks.
