GABA Doses
There is no standard recommended dosage for GABA supplementation, however, there are studies utilizing specific doses which offer us some guidelines, as well as thousands of anecdotal reports sharing their standard dosage.
Most users find that taking between 250mg-750mg, two or three times each day is beneficial. Those taking GABA for insomnia usually take between 500mg-750mg once, right before bedtime.
Side effects are few at these doses and include drowsiness, tingling/itching/tickling sensations in the face, neck or limbs, rapid breathing, increased heart rate and nausea.

I take GABA before going to sleep and it definitely knocks me out within 30 minutes. I wake up feeling refreshed and happy,not grumpy and groggy. Recently, i began taking it with melatonin and I fall asleep much faster and deeper. No more waking up to people’s conversation outside my room.
I have battled insomnia forever and often things that are said to knock me out and have documented evidence supporting its sedative ability have no effect on me. I took one pill not expecting much and it knocked me out. I slept the whole night through which is rare for me. I’m not the only one who this has worked for. So, we’re all just imagining this? Or our desire for it to work is making it work? I don’t think so.
Well written post – but you do realize that for some people, Gaba supplements are extremely effective right?
First – a nootropic’s efficacy doesn’t necessarily depend on whether or not it crosses the blood brain barrier. In lots of cases, yes, it does, but not all.
Secondly – On numerous occasions of neurotransmitter imbalance, induced by taking too many neurotransmitter precursors (struck many imbalances taking too many cholinergics), GABA supplements have been able to correct my problems (excess stress, inability to focus, excessive thinking, etc) in short order. It literally, in these occasions, gave me back my ability to “inhibit” (the whole idea behind GABA) some of the excessive brain activity I was having, that I didn’t want to have. It became orders of magnitude easier to control it. As if I just meditated for an hour.
So – It should just be noted that, for some people, GABA supplements are extremely effective. Laser effective.
