Men are increasingly using ginseng for ED (erectile dysfunction) symptoms. Along with certain lifestyle changes, like daily exercise, natural medicines such as ginseng extract may help to restore normalized sexual function.
ED is marked by symptoms including the inability to achieve or maintain firm erections, premature ejaculation and/or infertility. Healthy sexual function is a balance between psychological factors, hormones, muscles, nerves and circulation.
ED may result from any one or combination of these being unbalanced. Erectile dysfunction may also be caused by chronic stress and/or certain psychologic conditions. In some cases, ED is a result of combined physiological and physical issues.
Ginseng exhibits several effects which may improve erectile function, boost sex drive and improve sexual performance. In eastern medicine systems like TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), using ginseng for ED is very common. It has been used in the Orient for thousands of years for improving sexual function, and for various others uses as well.

- Boosts energy & mental focus

Ginseng Effects and Uses
Related Topics
In eastern medicine, certain rare natural substances are known as adaptogens. Adaptogens are believed to promote multiple preventive and curative effects by modulating biological pathways
Adaptogenic substances like ginseng are believed to:
- Boost immune system strength;
- Balance hormone synthesis and secretion;
- Increase strength and stamina;
- Invigorate sexual performance;
- Improve cognitive function;
- Resist the effects of stress;
- Combat the development of disease;
- Elongate life and increase well-being;
Most of the uses for ginseng have not been justified by clinical research. Its uses have been dominantly established through traditional usage.
However, there is evidence showing that it may be effective for improving symptoms of erectile dysfunction and boosting sexual performance and arousal.
Panax Ginseng for ED
In the majority of ED cases, the symptoms are caused by some physical circumstance. Common physical causes for ED include atherosclerosis (clogged blood vessels), heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity, metabolic syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, MS (multiple sclerosis) and others.
Certain prescription medications and herbal supplements, tobacco, alcohol and other substances may also cause erectile dysfunction.
Using Panax ginseng for ED may help to alleviate some psychological causes of erectile dysfunction. The brain and CNS (central nervous system) are directly involved in achieving erections, maintaining erections, sparking sexual arousal and/or achieving timely ejaculation.
Many men use ginseng supplements for erectile dysfunction because it is believed to be helpful at combating depression, anxiety and the effects of stress which may cause erectile dysfunction, low libido and other markers of sexual dysfunction.
Research on Ginseng for Sexual Function
Research has demonstrated that taking ginseng for ED may improve symptoms. In one study from the American Journal of Urology, 45 men with ED were studied over an 8-week period.
Treatment subjects were administered 900 mg Korean ginseng extract doses three times daily. The control group was given a placebo agent instead. Treatment group subjects demonstrated significant improvements in ED markers relative to placebo group members.
Sexual impairment in males in often age-related. This is believed to be largely due to chronic distortions of intracellular antioxidant and oxidant levels. Using ginseng for ED may help to regulate certain oxidative defense mechanisms.
In one study, an aqueous extract of Korean red ginseng was administered to rats with age-induced testicular dysfunction. The dosage level was 200 mg per kilogram of bodyweight. This dosage was mixed in with daily food provisions over a 6-month period.
At the conclusion of the study, multiple significant improvements to spermatogenesis parameters were reported. These improvements are believed to have been caused by regulating oxidative defense mechanisms and/or modulating redox proteins. Multiple other studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of ginseng for ED symptoms, in human subjects, with daily doses between 1400 mg and 2700 mg.
Ginseng for Premature Ejaculation and Libido
Research also shows that using ginseng for ED may help combat premature ejaculation. A specific Panax ginseng combination product seems to cause improvements in intravaginal ejaculatory latency.
This product, called SS Cream, is applied to the penis an hour before intercourse and washed off right beforehand. Other ingredients of SS Cream include angelica, clove, torlidis seed, asiasari root, toad venom and cinnamon bark.
Using ginseng for ED may also help to improve libido (sex drive). Three daily 1-gram capsules seems to have improved sexual arousal and satisfaction in postmenopausal women.
ArginMax for Women, a combination supplement from Daily Wellness Company may also increase libido and sexual gratification.
Is Using Ginseng for ED Safe?
Most men who use ginseng for ED symptoms experience no adverse effects. Those who do experience side effects most commonly report insomnia.
Other side effect possibilities include headaches, bleeding, itching, loss of appetite, vertigo (dizziness), nausea, vomiting and certain others.
Ginseng usage is not recommended for those who have hormone-sensitive cancer, diabetes, hypertension and certain other conditions. There are also possibilities for drug and herbal interactions when using ginseng supplements.
Using ginseng for ED is gaining popularity because it provides a safe, non-toxic method for improving certain symptoms. Note that clinical proof is limited and further research is ongoing. Ask your doctor if ginseng is safe for you. Be sure to mention all medications and herbals you may use.
