Avocado Plant Description
Human use and cultivation of avocados stretches back thousands of years.
Archaeologists have discovered evidence of some varieties in Peru that date back between 8,000-15,000 साल. Seeds were found buried with Incan mummies circa 750 ई. पू.. [1]
Some evidence suggests that avocado trees were cultivated in Mexico as early as 500 ई. पू.. The trees were introduced to California in the 1830s. आज, के बारे में 90% of US avocados are grown in nearly 6000 groves within California. [1]
Avocado trees are evergreen trees from the Lauraceae plant family. There are various species and subspecies.
One of the most common species is Persea americana commonly known as the Hass avocado. It can grow over sixty feet tall. [1]
According to Plant Village, the Hass tree is a large dome-shaped tree that develops oval or elliptical leaves arranged in a spiral on the tips of branches and produces clusters of small, green-yellow flowers at the end of twigs. [2]
While commonly considered a vegetable, avocados are technically fruits. The trees produce large, मांसल, pear-shaped fruits with a single large seed. Fruits develop smooth or warty skin, depending on variety. The flesh of the fruit is yellow-green with creamy consistency. [2]
Avocado is sometimes called other names depending on location. Some of these include Abokado, Aguacate, Ahuacate, Alligator Pear, Avocat, Avocato, Beurre du Marin, Palto, and Poire Alligator. [1]
How does Avocado Work inside the Body?
प्राकृतिक चिकित्सा व्यापक डेटाबेस (NMCD) states that avocado fruits, leaves and seeds have been used for their health-enhancing properties.
This plant is a rich source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. यह भी शामिल है:
- प्रोटीन
- फाइबर
- मैंगनीज
- Phosphorous
- लोहा
- पोटेशियम
- विटामिन ई
- विटामिन सी
- बीटा कैरोटीन
- thiamin
- riboflavin
- कोर्टेक्स अम्ल
- फोलिक एसिड [1]
NMCD के अनुसार, avocado:
- जिसमें है 60% more potassium than bananas
- Has a higher fat content (5g per serving) than other fruit
- Is a rich source of beta-sitosterol
- Is low in sodium and simple sugars
- Is rich in monounsaturated oils
- Is sodium- and cholesterol-free [1]
- May have cholesterol-lowering effects, possibly due to high fat and fiber content [1]
Most of the fats in avocado are monounsaturated. The NMCD reports that diets rich in these fatty acids can improve blood cholesterol profiles.
These diets can reduce total serum cholesterol and increase the ratio of “अच्छा” उच्च घनत्व लिपोप्रोटीन (एचडीएल) करने के लिए “ख़राब” कम घनत्व लेपोप्रोटीन (एलडीएल). [1]
डॉ.. Andrew Weil states, “As for the fat in avocados, it is healthy, monounsaturated fat that is good for the heart and won’t raise cholesterol.” [3]
के अनुसार 2013 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में, on average people who eat avocado regularly have:
- A lower risk of metabolic syndrome
- Better diet quality and nutrient intake
- Higher levels of HDL cholesterol
- Lower BMI (शरीर द्रव्यमान सूचकांक)
- Lower body weight
- Lower intake of added sugars [3]
के अनुसार डॉ.. weil, avocados also have a high content of potassium, a mineral many people are at least mildly deficient in. The daily requirement for potassium in healthy adults is 4.7 ग्राम. One avocado fruit contains about 975 मिलीग्राम. [3]
He says that potassium helps the body to keep blood pressure normalized by balancing the hypertensive (blood pressure-raising) effects of common table salt in the diet. [3]
This fruit also provides folic acid (विटामिन B9), विटामिन ए, an important antioxidant called glutathione, and fiber. It also contains beta-sitosterol, a phytochemical that is believed to help prevent cholesterol absorption in the intestines. [3]
The NMCD reports the following mechanisms of action associated with avocado extracts in
इन-विट्रो (कल्चरल सेल) और पशु अध्ययन:
- Anticarcinogenic (works against cancer development)
- विरोधी भड़काऊ (सूजन और लालिमा कम कर देता है)
- एंटीऑक्सीडेंट (प्रतिरोध और मरंमत मुक्त कट्टरपंथी क्षति)
- Chemopreventive (reduce the risk of cancer)
- Chondroprotective (delays progressive joint space narrowing)
- Plasma lipid (वसा) lowering [1]
Uses for Avocado
In Amazonian history, native populations used avocado as an herbal medicine for various purposes including treating gout, and preventing rheumatism and arthritis. They also used it to keep their muscles, bones and joints healthy. [1]
In the Aztec language, the fruit is called ahuacat, which means testicle. Avocado was used by Aztec elites as an aphrodisiac, and was forbidden for the public to enjoy. Conquistadors from Spain are credited with changing the name to avocado. [1]
The NMCD reports that people use avocado fruit orally today for:
- एक aphrodisiac के रूप में
- हाईपरक्लोस्ट्रेलेमिया (elevated blood cholesterol levels)
- मोटापा
- Stimulating menstrual flow [1]
A lipid faction of the fruit is used for osteoarthritis, a condition marked by the breakdown of cartilage and surrounding bone tissue in joints.
Topically, the oil is used to soothe and heal the skin, for gum disease, and for sclerosis of the skin (abnormal tissue hardening). [1]
Avocado seed, छाल, and leaf are used for diarrhea and dysentery – a type of intestinal infection with severe bloody diarrhea. These plant parts are also used to relieve toothache. [1]
Some people use an avocado oil and vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) cream topically for a disease called psoriasis which is marked by red, दरिद्र, itchy patches of skin. [1]
The fruit pulp is applied topically on the head to promote hair growth, and on wounds to promote faster healing. [1]
Avocado Health Benefits
Mercola Health describes the following health benefits associated with avocado consumption:
- Contains antioxidants
- May help to lower serum cholesterol, ट्राइग्लिसराइड्स, and certain inflammatory markers
- May help to better absorb other nutrients from foods
- Nutrition-rich with protein, स्वस्थ वसा, fiber and 20 different vitamins and minerals
- May relieve arthritis symptoms [4]
The NMCD rates avocado as Possibly Effective for osteoarthritis (उपास्थि अध...) और हाईपरक्लोस्ट्रेलेमिया (उच्च सीरम कोलेस्ट्रॉल). [1]
There has been some research conducted using this supplement for obesity and psoriasis. It is believed to have weight loss-promoting effects, but more studies are needed to validate preliminary results.
There has been little human research conducted on the use of avocado oil supplements. Clinical trials are needed to determine the full scope of health benefits. [1]
Osteoarthritis and Joint Function
In multiple human research studies, certain factions of avocado and soybean fats have been observed to reduce pain and overall severity of osteoarthritis compared to placebo. [1]
These lipid factions are known as avocado and soybean unsaponifiable (ASU) factions. Unsaponifiable means these extracts are the lipid portions that are unaffected by alkaline hydrolysis, also known as saponification (a type of chemical reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt).
NMCD के अनुसार, using oral ASU supplements for several months has been shown to significantly reduce pain and overall disability for certain people diagnosed with osteoarthritis. [1]
Clinical research suggests that 600 mg/kg daily ASU factions for up to 90 days significantly improves severity assessment scores and pain in patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis.
This dosage also reduces the use of analgesic medications in these patients relative to placebo controls. [1]
सभी अध्ययनों से नहीं मिल पाया है सकारात्मक परिणाम. One clinical trial involved use of a lower dosage 300 mg/kg daily ASU fractions for 2 years in patients with hip osteoarthritis.
Participants in the treatment group did not experience significant improvements in pain scores, pain reliever use, joint space narrowing or clinical severity scores. [1]
More research is needed to determine the therapeutic efficacy of specific avocado lipid extracts for osteoarthritis and other cartilage, प्रमाणात, and joint disorders.
If you are interested in learning more about ASU for osteoarthritis then speak with your doctor to see if this product is right for your needs.
Avocado for Hypercholesterolemia
The NMCD states that according to multiple research studies, enriching your diet with avocado and monounsaturated fatty acids can:
- Lower total serum cholesterol
- Reduce low-density lipoprotein (एलडीएल) कोलेस्ट्रॉल
- Decrease apolipoprotein B
- Increase high-density lipoprotein (एचडीएल) serum cholesterol levels [1]
One study compared the effects of a diet enriched with avocado that was high in monounsaturated fats (AE) and a diet that was high in complex carbohydrates (AHA-III).
Patients were first given the AE diet for three weeks and then the AHA-III diet for three weeks, or vice versa. [5]
While both diets were found to lower total cholesterol compared to baseline, the AE diet was more effective.
LDL cholesterol levels were seen to decrease significantly with the AE diet and not the AHA-III diet. HDL cholesterol levels did not change with the AE diet, but decreased with the AHA-III diet. [5]
The researchers concluded that overall the AE diet was more effective than the AHA-III diet at decreasing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, while not lowering levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol. [5]
More research is still needed to tell if and how avocado works to balance lipid levels in the blood.
Ask your doctor about increasing your intake of avocado to lower LDL (“ख़राब”) cholesterol or to support cardiovascular health. [1]
Avocado Supplements
NMCD रिपोर्ट है कि वहां से अधिक 190 different dietary supplements made with avocado available on the market. Essential oil, तरल अर्क, tinctures, कैप्सूल, गोलियाँ, and powders are available. Topical creams are also available.
Most oral supplements provide between 500-1000 mg of avocado oil. ASU products typically provide around 300 mg of unsaponifiables.
Regividerm® is a standardized topical avocado cream formulation produced by adding vitamin B12 and avocado essential oil to vitamin E (अल्फा-tocopherol). The oil is added until an 82.9mg/kg vitamin E concentration is achieved.
When possible choose organic, non-GMO supplements that are guaranteed to be free to contaminants. You should store products according to their instructions in cool, डार्क स्थान.
Avocado Dosage Recommendations
When used as a dietary supplement the typical dosage ranges from between 500-1000 mg of avocado oil per day in capsules or liquid drops.
NMCD reports the following adult oral doses of avocado that have been studied:
- ½-1 ½ avocado fruit daily, के लिए 2-4 सप्ताह, for decreasing serum lipid levels
- 300 grams avocado fruit daily, के लिए 7 दिन, for hypercholesterolemia
- 300 mg/kg ASU daily for 3 या 6 months for knee osteoarthritis
- 300 mg/kg ASU daily for 2 years for hip osteoarthritis [1]
As a topical cream, Regividerm® containing avocado oil and 82.9mg/kg vitamin E has been applied twice daily for 12 महीनों. [1]
सुरक्षा, साइड इफेक्ट, और बातचीत
The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates avocado as Likely Safe in common dietary amounts.
When used orally and appropriately in medicinal amounts, unsaponifiable fractions of avocado oil are rated as Possibly Safe. It has been used for to two years in research studies.
Topical use of avocado oil is rated as Possibly Safe. Topical use of the oil and Vitamin B12 is rated as Possibly Safe when combined together for up to 12 सप्ताह.
Avocado oil supplements are well-tolerated in most healthy people. The NMCD reports that one systematic review and ten clinical trials have shown that it has similar side effects to placebo agents.
Topical use of Regividerm® has been seen to cause itching when first applied in some people, but this effect is seen to diminish with further use. [1]
Avocado is not known to interact with foods, प्रयोगशाला परीक्षणों, जड़ी बूटी या पूरक. हालांकि, it may interact with warfarin or other drugs with anticoagulant effects. This interaction has only been noted in a single case though.
People with allergies to latex may experience allergic cross-sensitivity to avocados. It is recommended to avoid eating or using products containing avocado if you have an allergy to latex.
