Jarro Dophilus from Jarrow Formulas is a broad-spectrum probiotic supplement. Jarro Dophilus comes in both Original Formula and an enhanced EPS formula.
This product contains a well-researched mix of the most effective probiotic strains including Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum.
Jarro Dophilus is considered to be a high quality and reliably manufactured product, though prices are higher than comparable products sold by other manufacturers.
The Jarro-Dophilus EPS (Enhanced Probiotic System) product is also advertised as a shelf-stable and room-temperature stable product with EnteroGuard enteric coated capsules to protect the active bacterial colonies from harsh stomach acid.
According to the manufacturer, this supplement supports intestinal and immune function and health. Most supplements in the line contain 5 billion Colony Forming Units per capsule, but there are also high potency products with 25 billion cells per capsule.
There is also an Ultra Jarro-Dophilus product that provides 10 strains of friendly bacteria at a dose of 50 billion organisms per capsule. This product also uses Gel Matrix Gut-Transit Protection to protect the bacteria from stomach and duodenal fluids.

Probiotics are a grouping of microorganisms which deliver a beneficial effect on human health. There are hundreds of species of probiotic bacteria, but the most abundant and effective are those in the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genus.
Jarro Dophilus Original combines six different strains together to deliver the best of all the probiotic beneficence in a single capsule. These bacterial agents work together symbiotically and effectively.
Jarro Dophilus EPS (Enhanced Probiotic System) combines eight strains of the best probiotics for optimal intestinal function and proper immune responses.
Probiotics come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes making it difficult to know which microorganism is the best to treat the specific symptoms.
For example, to treat lactose intolerance, you could take several different strains of Lactobacillus without realizing that L. acidophilus is the ideal choice because of its effectiveness at breaking down lactose. When lactose is broken down, symptoms of intolerance decrease.
The probiotics in Jarro Dophilus work symbiotically to support one another. This allows them to work more effectively and quickly than they would on their own.
Careful research and production methods, followed by careful handling of the live bacteria, assure the end user that the live organisms used in the manufacturing process are still viable and useful at the time of ingestion.
How Does it Work?
Probiotics function in our digestive tract by converting carbohydrates into other chemical compounds like lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. These compounds serve to kill off certain bacteria and to make the environment extremely uninviting and inhospitable for others.
Probiotics tend to thrive in the harsh environment of the human gastrointestinal tract, and some are even able to make it all the way through to colonize the colon where they break down some of the substrates not able to be digested earlier.
Another function of the probiotics in Jarro Dophilus is to crowd out pathogenic bacterial agents which can cause illness, discomfort and disease.
They do this through a process called competitive exclusion, wherein they out-compete the harmful microorganisms by colonizing in massive force along the intestinal lumen.
Jarro Dophilus Original and Jarro Dophilus EPS work by bringing together the best probiotics to promote intestinal health and immune function.
According to Jarrow Formulas, “Jarro-Dophilus EPS (Enhanced Probiotic System) supports the health of the intestinal tract with a balanced mixture of 8 complementary probiotic strains. The 5 billion viable cells of clinically documentated strains in Jarro-Dophilus EPS have been scientifically shown to have a positive influence on the composition of intestinal microflora.”
Another product, Baby Jarro Dophilus, is targeted toward infants.
Jarro Dophilus Original Formula
Jarro Dophilus Original Formula contains 3.4 billion viable living cells consisting of:
- Bifidobacterium longum – colonizes intestinal lumen, stimulates immune response and suppresses intestinal putrefactive bacteria
- Bifidobacterium lactis – stimulates proper immune response and uniquely produces high numbers of polysaccharides
- Lactobacillus acidophilus – assists in breaking down lactose (milk sugar) which is responsible for lactose intolerance
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Lactobacillus casei
- Lactobacillus plantarum
The primary ingredients are Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum).
These two probiotics are often teamed together to produce optimal results for restoration of the microbiota in the gut following antibiotic treatment or other disruption of gut flora.
When complemented with specialty probiotics like B. lactis and L. Casei, these two probiotic workhorses shift into high gear to colonize the gastrointestinal tract and create an environment in which their more specialized partners are able to function optimally.
This formula must be kept refrigerated in order to maintain viability.
Other versions of the product are manufactured to be room-temperature stable and shelf-stable. This means that they do not need to be refrigerated for the products to work.
Jarro Dophilus EPS
Jarrow’s Enhanced Formula contains at least 5 billion viable live bacteria in each enteric coated pill.
This special enteric coating assures the bacteria will survive until reaching the small intestine where they can quickly colonize and perform their probiotic work.
According to the manufacturer, the “enteric coated capsules that bypass the stomac’s acid barrier and optimize the number of friendly bacteria that reaches and adheres to the intestines. Protecting the 5 billion viable cells means you get more from each capsule.”
In addition to the six primary probiotic bacteria contained in the Original Formula, Jarrow adds Pediococcus acidilactici and Bifidobacterium breve.
Pediococcus acidilactici works specifically to prevent the spoilage of fermented foods caused by harmful bacteria. This supports the fight against foodborne pathogens. B. breve works to colonize, while specifically addressing inflammation in the digestive tract.
This formula has an extended shelf life if kept refrigerated, but is able to remain viable even if left unrefrigerated, making it ideal for travel.
Jarro Dophilus Side Effects
Jarro Dophilus is considered safe for general use however individuals with weakened immune systems should talk to a doctor before taking this supplement.
Individuals with short bowel syndrome should avoid probiotic use unless expressly prescribed by a doctor.
Some rare occurrences of artificial heart valve infection have been reported.
Where to Buy
You can buy Jarro Dophilus supplement pills online from several different vendors.
