Although there are numerous uses that span both sexes, the aphrodisiac quality of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) was historically attributed to men within traditional Chinese medicine.
Ginseng has been an important ingredient within traditional herbal systems for thousands of years, but only became known to the West around the 18th century. Ginseng was widely used as a tonic to increase energy, help the body cope with stress and support good health into old age.

Ginseng is used by herbalists as a male aphrodisiac. It is now widely used to boost sexual performance, but scientific studies endorsing this use are limited.
P. ginseng has been observed to increase testosterone levels in animal experiments, especially after periods of testosterone suppression due to hypogonadism and/or infertility.
The mechanism of testosterone increase is ill defined. In a phenomenon similar to the effects of fenugreek, ginseng may cause a surplus of testosterone by impeding its conversion to DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
Korean Ginseng supplements for men may help address vascular and psychogenic dysfunction associated with erectile dysfunction. In rodent tests ginseng was observed to increase testicular protein synthesis and gonadal weight.
In one study, a dosage of 1g/kg of bodyweight was administered for 56 days. Improvements in sperm quality and function were noted.
In human studies Korean ginseng has been observed to help improve symptoms of male infertility. Sperm motility, quantity and quality were all observed to increase during the trial. An increase in testicular protein synthesis was also observed.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, in several small studies of human males, ginseng supplementation has been observed to help reduce difficulty in achieving erection in some individuals. It has also been observed to increase sex drive and reduce erection difficulties.
Korean Ginseng Alleviates Fatigue
In animal tests, constituents of P. ginseng (particularly polysaccharides) were observed to reduce fatigue and increase endurance.
In one 15-day trial, a ginseng dose of 200mg/kg bodyweight was observed to significantly improve performance in mice (treading water), which peaked one hour after dosing.
In the same study, increased expression of SOD (superoxide dismutase), suppression of free circulating triglycerides and enhanced glucose circulation were also observed.
For this reason, Korean Ginseng is often used by male and female bodybuilders and athletes as a pre-workout supplement. In other studies, this supplement was observed to decrease perception of exhaustion during a workout as well as muscle damage, while increasing exercise capacity.
There are also significant cognitive benefits from taking Ginseng, resulting in greater alertness and mental performance.
Ginseng Effects on Hair and Skin
Korean ginseng may help improve the skin and hair. In mice treated with androgens, hair re-growth was stimulated by a constituent of P. ginseng – isolated Rg3 ginsenoside. P. ginseng may help treat androgenic alopecia (hair loss) in men. Korean red ginseng seems to be particularly effective when stacked with Fo Ti (he shou wu) – a Chinese medicinal herb.
Korean ginseng may also help improve skin health, but this use requires significantly more research before it can be supported by scientific evidence. Initial observations indicate that Korean ginseng may help protect the skin from UV-B radiation. Collagen dysfunction and cellular degradation were observed to decrease with ginseng usage.
Cardiovascular Health
Korean ginseng has been observed to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. Triglycerides were also decreased and overall lipid profiles were observed to improve. These effects may help support cardiovascular health.
Review of Korean Ginseng for Men
Panax ginseng has been used across cultures for thousands of years. Contemporary investigation indicates ginseng may possess a robust set of therapeutic functions.
Men and women may benefit from decreased fatigue, heightened sexual performance, sharper thinking, improved hormonal balance, enhanced cardiovascular health, improved liver function and stabilized moods.
Although ginseng is considered a potent medicinal herb in the East, it is usually seen as a dietary supplement in the West. Ginseng should not be taken for prolonged periods (more than approximately six weeks).
