Korean red ginseng extract has long been used to promote well being and vitality.
For more than two millennia, Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng) has been used throughout Asia for its therapeutic properties, both independently and in combination with other herbs.

Ginseng supplementation is often taken to enhance sexual drive and performance.
Yet, research on the sexual effects of ginseng is limited. In the available studies, ginseng has been observed to:
- Improve spermatogenesis, increase levels of nucleic acids in the testicles, and increase gonadal protein synthesis in mice.
- Protect the testicles and enhance testicular functioning. It may also help reduce damage to the testicles, especially from alcohol consumption.
- Improve sperm motility (spontaneous movement) and spermatogenesis in human males with infertility symptoms.
- Help alleviate both vascular and psychogenic erectile dysfunction symptoms, including the inability to generate and maintain erections, poor sperm count and poor sperm quality.
In one pilot study involving 60 men with mild to severe erectile dysfunction symptoms, one gram of Korean ginseng extract, administered three times daily over the course of twelve weeks, improved symptoms in two-thirds of the subjects.
Results from various studies have been assessed and found to be largely lacking in standardized methodology, equipment, dosing and other relevant variables. Currently, there is a moderate amount of data in support of the sexual benefits of Korean ginseng.
Korean Red Ginseng Neurological Effects
P. ginseng was traditionally used to stimulate appetite and the herb is still used for this purpose today. When combined with Astragalus membranaceus it was observed to improve hunger signaling in anorexic and cachexic subjects. In rodent tests, appetite increased between 37 percent and 50 percent with Korean red ginseng extract supplementation.
P. ginseng is also used as a mood enhancer and stabilizer. Ginsenosides and acidic polysaccharides in ginseng were observed to decrease depression and anxiety in mice. Also, at a dosage of 100 mg/kg bodyweight, aggressive behaviors were decreased and socialization variables improved.
Korean red ginseng extract is commonly used as an adaptogen.
The existence of adaptogens is not commonly accepted by the scientific community, but advocates still highlight the ability of these natural products to improve the body’s capacity to cope with daily stressors.
Adaptogenic compounds may alter the genetic transcription of certain enzymes, helping the individual to better deal with the effects of daily stress.
Also, ginseng seems to increase the synthesis of dopamine beta-hydroxylase and tyrosine hydroxylase at mRNA levels.
Another traditional and current use of ginseng is to enhance mental clarity and cognitive ability. In animal tests ginseng has been observed to increase neurite growth, improve memory and increase learning ability. Nevertheless, overall results were inconclusive and further testing is required.
Ongoing Research into Korean Ginseng
Ginseng extract is commonly used for a wide variety of purposes. While clinical testing continues, current data is insufficient to warrant any generalized curative or preventive claims. Current clinical tests are focused on ginseng’s capacity to:
- Improve physical performance and stamina;
- Lower LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood;
- Decrease risk factors in the development of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and heart disease;
- Lower sugar (glucose) levels in the blood, which may help control the symptoms of type II diabetes;
- Help individuals reach and maintain healthy weight levels;
- Decrease the onset and progression of certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, lung, skin and cervical cancers;
Ginseng appears most effective at enhancing mood, strengthening immunity and improving cognitive function. It also shows strong promise as a natural testosterone booster, a remedy for erectile dysfunction and an athletic performance enhancer.
Ginseng Safety and Side Effects
Panax ginseng has a long history of use and is not commonly associated with severe side effects. The most common side effect of supplementation is insomnia. In sensitive individuals, excessive or prolonged use may cause headaches, itching skin, vaginal bleeding, menstrual disorders, irritability and more.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dosing. It is best to begin supplementation at half the recommended dosage until you can monitor the effects. Every individual may react to the effects of Korean red ginseng extract supplementation differently.
Herbalists often recommend that ginseng use be cycled and not exceed six weeks of continuous use before temporarily stopping supplementation.
