Lactobacillus Gasseri supplements are used to bolster the immune system, support weight loss diets, reduce inflammation and alleviate allergic symptoms.
Lactobacillus gasseri is a probiotics bacteria that is naturally present in the digestive system and may be found in some common foods.
L. Gasseri may be found in standalone probiotic supplements or in probiotic complex products that contain multiple synergistic strains of good bacteria. It is often paired with other members of the Lactobacillus family as well as probiotics from the Bifidobacterium genus.
Research shows that Lactobacillus gasseri supplements can have a positive effect for regulating cholesterol levels, inhibiting fat accumulation around the belly, improving digestion, reducing symptoms of diarrhea and helping to prevent kidney stones.

Clincal studies have shown Lactobacillus gasseri reduces oxalate which can cause kidney stones to form. It is believed the Formyl-CoA transferase (Frc) and oxalyl coenzyme A decarboxylase (oxc) is involved in the oxalate reduction.
This probiotic has been shown to break down oxalate in vitro. Lactobacillus gasseri use is being investigated as a possible treatment for kidney stones.
Another clinical study has found Lactobacillus gasseri alters the production of the serum immunoglobin E (IgE) production in those with allergic rhinitis when given a fermented milk with Lactobacillus gasseristrain TMC0356.
IgE was reduced after the probiotic treatment. Further research is being done on this probiotic’s application in treatment of this condition.
In a study published in Microbiology and Immunology in 2007 showed Lactobacillus gasseri strain TMC0356 and Lactobacillus GG helped reduce inflammatory responses that are found in allergy symptoms when used in tests on guinea pigs.
In 2012 an animal clinical study on mice published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed Lactobacillus gasseri helped reduce the airway inflammation found in allergic asthma.
Lactobacillus Gasseri Tablets for Weight Loss
Lactobacillus gasseri pills are sometimes used as part of a weight loss program. This probiotic strain is reported to help to reduce belly fat, inhibit weight gain and speed up themetabolism.
A clinical study published in the 2013 edition of the British Journal of Nutritionshowed those given fermented milk enriched with the Lactobacillus gasseri strain SBT2055 experienced a significant reduction in abdominal fat over the placebo group.
It is unclear the specific mechanism of action by which probiotics like Lactobacillus gasseri can support weight loss. Research shows that individuals who are overweight have different bacterial compositions in their gut compared to individuals who are at a healthy weight.
By seeding the intestines with probiotic strains found in higher levels in the intestines of those at a healthy weight, it may be possible to promote weight loss. In addition to L. gasseri, the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus may also be beneficial for weight loss.
L. gasseri supplements have been recommended by Dr. Oz for weight loss results. On the Dr. Oz program, it was suggested to use acacia powder as well to help nourish this probiotic. This prebiotic fiber also helps to create a full feeling to help you eat less, especially if consumed with lots of water.
An animal clinical study with mice published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2015 showed giving the probiotic Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 (LG2055) reduced inflammation in a high fat diet (HFD) by inhibiting the macrophage (a large phagocytic cell) invasion into the adipose tissue (fat cells).
In a clinical study published in the Journal of Dairy Science in 2010 showed when Lactobacillus gasseri strain CHO-220 was combined with inulin (a prebiotic fiber) it greatly improved total and LDL (Low-density lipoprotein), bad cholesterol levels when compared to the placebo group.
Lactobacillus Gasseri Probiotics for the Immune System
Lactobacillus gasseri helps prevent the spread of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines.
By out-competing these bacteria for nutrients and for space on the intestinal walls, it may prevent disease-causing bacteria from being able to colonize and growth.
Lactobacillus gasseri has been shown to inhibit the growth of the pathogen bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
This pathogen is found in meats and is particularly dangerous because it is heat resistant and is not destroyed by cooking. This infection is mainly passed on by infected food workers through hand prepared foods.
Staphylococcus aureus is fast acting and symptoms of this type of food poisoning usually develop within one to six hours after eating contaminated food. These symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting.
Healthy adults can typically recover from this bacteria in one to three days. But in the elderly, the young or those who are immune impaired it may cause severe illness.
Lactobacillus gasseri produces H202 (Hydrogen Peroxide) and Lactic acid in the intestines. It also produces the bacteriocin Gassericin A that helps combat the Staphylococcus aureus infection. Bacteriocins are proteinaceous toxins that prevent the growth of other bacteria.
L. gasseri can also inhibit the growth of a number of additional pathogens and harmful forms of bacteria.
A clinical study published in the Molecular Microbiology journal showed that Lactobacillus gasseri hosts colonize and competitively exclude the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria. This is a pathogen that causes diarrhea.
A clinical study in the Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins journal in September 2015 showed Lactobacillus gasseri ATCC 33323 could inhibit the adherence of the sexually transmitted pathogen, Neisseria gonorrhoeae to epithelial cells in laboratory cultures.
A clinical study in Archives of Microbiology in June 2015 showed Lactobacillus gasseri CMUL57 can inhibit Herpes Simplex Type 2.
Contraindications
Lactobacillus gasseri probiotic supplements can cause bloating and intestinal gas in some people. While probiotics are generally safe for the majority of healthy adults, there is a risk of negative side effects when given to individuals who have immune system disorders.
People with impaired immune systems such as those with replacement organs or those on immune suppressive medication should not take probiotics. People with open surgical wounds should not take this probiotic.
Probiotics do interact with antibiotics and should be taken at least two hours apart from each other to avoid interfering with the effectiveness of antibiotic medications.
Unless advised otherwise, probiotics should not be taken if pregnant or breast feeding due to insufficient research into the safety of probiotic supplements for these populations.
