Lactobacillus gasseri is a probiotic organism found naturally in the digestive, genital and urinary systems of the body as well as in breast milk, dairy products and some fermented foods.
Lactobacillus gasseri is a species in the genus Lactobacillus, one of the most well-researched families of probiotics.
Sources of L. gasseri probiotics include are yogurt, kefir (fermented cow’s milk), miso (traditional Japanese seasoning of fermented soybeans), Kimchi (Korean fermented dish made of cabbage or radishes), sauerkraut, and Puba or carimã (fermented cassava roots).
This probiotic is also available as a supplement.
Lactobacillus gasseri probiotics are used in fitness regimes for its support of digest health, for burning belly fat and helping to prevent fat production.
This probiotic also reduces inflammation, helps lower cholesterol and helps to regulate the hormone leptin. Leptin is a hormone made by the adipose (fat) cells that helps maintain energy by suppressing hunger.
It is believed that many obese people are desensitized to this hormone, which may lead to overeating.
Dr. Oz recommends taking a fiber Acacia powder with the Lactobacillus gasseri probiotic for weight loss.
This powder is sourced from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree and is mixed with water that forms a gel in the intestines with to help create a full feeling so less is eaten.

A study on 210 Japanese adults published in the British Journal of Nutrition in November 2013 found that this supplement could help to decrease body weight.
The study showed that consumption for 12 weeks of fermented milk (FM) containing the probiotic, Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 (LG2055), resulted in substantially reduced abdominal fat compared to the placebo control group. Further study was suggested to see if continuing consumption of probiotics would be needed to be maintain this weight loss result.
Another study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition of 87 adults with high BMI (Body Mass Index) and abdominal fat were given Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 enriched milk for twelve weeks.
The result of the study showed a decrease of abdominal fat, body weight and waist size. More research is needed to understand the mechanisms of action behind these results. It would appear that the effects on of this probiotic on leptin may be a significant contributing factor.
L. gasseri is also observed to improve cholesterol levels. A study with 32 adults with high cholesterol levels published in the Journal of Dairy Science in 2010 showed Lactobacillus gasseri strain CHO-220 reduced cholesterol. The probiotic was administered along with inulin – a prebiotic fiber that helps support probiotic growth and colonization of the gut.
The study found this combination substantially improved the total and LDL cholesterol levels of subjects when compared to the control placebo group.
More Lactobacillus Gasseri Benefits
L. gasseri is also reported to improve pain for women during their menstrual period.
A study published in Cytotechnology in 2011 looked at 66 patients with endometriosis who were given Lactobacillus gasseri strain OLL2809 for 12 weeks.
This study found it provided substantial relief for menstrual pain compared to the control placebo group.
In another study, L. gasseri was observed to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties and to improve the immune system response in allergies.
An animal study on Lactobacillus gasseri strain TMC0356 and Lactobacillus GG published in Microbiology and Immunology in 2007 showed this probiotic helps reduce inflammation and other allergy symptoms.
Another animal study, this one with mice, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2012 showed Lactobacillus gasseri helped reduce airway inflammation of allergic asthma.
The supplement is also used to generally improve digestive health and to alleviate diarrhea. In a double blind study published in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in May 2006, a Lactobacillus gasseri and Bifidobacterium longum fixed bacterium combination was effective in treating acute diarrhea.
This probiotic combination cut the duration and severity of the diarrhea in adults in the study when compared to a known effective mono-bacterium product.
