Lactobacillus Reuteri Prodentis is a probiotic strain specifically combined to promote dental health.
It is purported to help periodontal conditions such as gingivitis (mild gum inflammation) and the more serious gum inflammation of periodontitis.
Lactobacillus reuteri prodentis is a combination of two L. Reuteri strains DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289 developed by Swedish company BioGaia®
Clinical studies have shown L. reuteri strains are effective in treating infant colic. These probiotic strains have also been studied for diarrhea prevention and reducing the severity of diarrhea in children.
This probiotic is also used in the eradication of the H. pylori infection. It also helps reduce the side effects from standard H. pylori treatment such as constipation, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

Lactobacillus Reuteri Prodentis has been clinically studied for its effects on dental health. This good probiotic bacteria helps to combat the effects of bad bacteria in the mouth that can contribute to cavities, gum disease and bad breath.
Lactobacillus reuteri prodentis adheres to the oral mucosa and has been shown to help treat periodontal conditions such as Gingivitis and Periodontitis effectively.
Gingivitis causes red inflamed and swollen gums and the gums bleed when the teeth are brushed. Not brushing the teeth properly and not flossing causes a plaque produced by bacteria to attach itself to the surface of the teeth.
This bacterium causing plaque releases toxins which irritate the gums and cause inflammation. Plaque that doesn’t get brushed away after a couple days becomes hard under the gum line and forms tartar.
The presence of tartar also makes the plaque harder to brush away and it creates an ideal environment for the bacterium that causes plaque to grow.
Other conditions are also risk factor for developing gum disease such as a weakened immune system, diabetes, hormonal changes, medications, old age, smoking, substance abuse and viral and fungal infections.
ANUG (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis) is also caused by a weakened immune system, as well as malnutrition, poor oral hygiene, smoking, stress and untreated gingivitis and periodontitis.
Benefits of Lactobacilli Reuteri Prodentis
Several clinical studies have been conducted to evaluate Lactobacilli reuteri prodentis for conditions related to dental health. In one double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, this probiotic was used alone and in combination with scaling and root planing (SRP) in volunteers with chronic periodontitis.
Thirty chronic periodontitis patients in ages ranging from 34 to 50 with 19 males and 11 females in the clinical trial group were studied. The participants received a toothbrush, toothpaste, and brushing instructions and L. reuteri Prodentis lozenges or the placebo lozenges. These lozenges were taken twice daily from day 21 to day 42 of the clinical trial.
Several clinical parameters related to dental heath were measured. The indicators were Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL)) and microbiological levels of the pathogens Aggregibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), and Prevotella intermedia (Pi).
Assessments were made on day 0 before SRP treatment, on day 21 before administration of the lozenges, and on day 42. This particular randomized controlled trial confirms the plaque inhibition, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects of L. reuteri Prodentis.
Those given the probiotic lozenge had improved periodontitis symptoms compared to the group given the placebo.

The BioGaia® ProDentis product with L. reuteri Prodentis is available as lozenge and chewing gum in a mint flavor. The lozenge needs to be dissolved slowly in the mouth. When using the gum it must be chewed for at least five minutes.
A clinical study published in Acta Odontol Scandinavica in May 2013 showed oral administration of Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis improved the condition in non-smoking patients with beginning to moderate cases of chronic periodontitis.
In a clinical study published in the Journal of Oral Microbiology in November 2010 showed that Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis had plaque inhibition properties as well anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.
The findings of this study concluded this probiotic for use for non-surgical therapy and maintenance periodontal treatment. This type of treatment was also recommended as an alternative when SRP might be contraindicated.
In another clinical study, the Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 probiotic strain was examined for use in the prevention of nosocomial (hospital acquired) diarrhea in children. Another study showed Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 significantly improved the colic symptoms of crying and fussing in breastfed Canadian colicky infants.
Contraindications
BioGaia® ProDentis with Lactobacilli reuteri Prodentis is used by dental professionals. The manufacturer states it is safe to consume for children, adults, elderly and pregnant women.
Probiotics should not be used for those with immune impaired conditions such as organ donor recipients or those on immunosuppressive medication. People with SBS (Short Bowel Syndrome) and open surgical wounds should also avoid probiotics.
Those with milk allergies or anyone who is lactose intolerant should avoid milk based probiotics. Probiotics do interact with antibiotics and should be taken at least two hours apart from each other.
Lactobacillus reuteri prodentis is beneficial for treating Candida infections and periodontal condtions. It has also been found to help colic and diarrhea in infants and is used to treat the H. pylori infection. Speak to your doctor to learn more about whether this probiotic is appropriate for you.
