Lactobacillus tablets are probiotic supplements that contain one or more strains of Lactic-acid producing bacteria.
Examples of Lactobacillus probiotic bacteria include Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Lactobacillus Reuteri and Lactobacillus Casei.
Different strains of Lactobacillus probiotic bacteria may confer different effects when supplemented orally. A combination of these strains is recommended to enhance effectiveness.
Oral probiotic tablets may also contain Bifidobacterium probiotic strains, which tend to colonize different parts of the gastrointestinal tract compared to Lactobacillus strains.
When selecting an oral Lactobacillus capsule or pill to use, it is best to select products that contain at least 10 billion Colony Forming Units (CFUs) per serving. This dosage has been recommended as providing the best benefits for digestive health, immunity and general wellness.
Depending on your personal goals, you may decide to purchase Lactobacillus tablets with specific strains of probiotic bacteria.
Some probiotics are noted for supporting weight loss, others may lower cholesterol levels and others still may alleviate symptoms of allergies or lactose intolerance. For general digestive function and immune system support, a complex with multiple strains is recommended.

Lactobacillus tablets are available in a non-dairy form for vegans as well as combination formulas with other probiotic strains. Time release tablets are also available.
Some Lactobacillus tablets also have an enteric coating to help the probiotic survive the stomach and bile acids to reach the colon. BMTTS (bi-layer mini-tablet in tablet systems) are also being studied for delivery of Lactobacillus Acidophilus for release in the stomach and in the colon.
Some products are specifically formulated to support female health and to treat vaginal yeast infections. Strains of Lactobacillus probiotic organisms have been found to inhibit the colonization of the Candida yeast.
There are also chewable tablets that are formulated for children. These tablets may contain lower doses and use strains that have been specifically tested as being safe for children.
In addition to tablets, liquid probiotic drops or gummies can be used by individuals who do not want to swallow pills.
Lactobacillus Tablets Benefits
Lactobacillus tablets have wide-ranging benefits related to improved digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity and protection from pathogens.
These supplements have been studied for a number of specific health conditions like BV, IBS, IBD, Crohn’s Disease, Leaky Gut Syndrome and more. Below are some results published in clinical trials regarding the effects of Lactobacillus probiotics.
According to the Natural Medicines database, Lactobacillus GG sold by Culturelle is likely effective for the treatment of Rotaviral diarrhea. In a research study, it was able to reduce the duration of diarrhea symptoms in infants and children by 1 – 3 days.
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG is rated as possibly effective for reducing antibiotic associated diarrhea. Probiotics are often administered to restore balance to the microbiome following or during the use of antibiotics.
In research studies, this probiotic tablet was found to decrease stool frequency and increase consistency in children receiving antibiotics.
Some research suggests that Lactobacillus tablets may improve atopic dermatitis symptoms. In children with eczema, administering 5 billion CFUs twice daily of L. Sakei for twelve weeks reduced symptoms. Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG was also effective for reducing eczema in infants.
The strains Lactobacillus johnsonii and Lactobacillus gasseri have been shown to reduce inflammation and gastritis caused by H pylori infection. When combined with bifidobacteria and the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, equivalent results were achieved.
Additional Research Results
Research shows that multiple strains of Lactobacillus tablets can improve Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms. Taking the product Lacteol Fort (which is made of heat-killed Lactobacillus acidophilus capsules) for 6 weeks resulted in significant improvements in IBS symptoms.
Those given the treatment reported less abdominal pain, bloating, and improved bowel movement consistency.
A clinical study published in in April 2014 showed Lactobacillus tablets containing the probiotic strain Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 taken daily helps to control oral malodor (halitosis) and malodor-related factors.
A clinical study published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection in January 2009 showed that Lactobacillus 0073 containing vaginal tablets that were intravaginal administered with selected strains of Lactobacilli can restore a normal vaginal microbiota and be used in treating bacterial vaginosis (BV).
A clinical study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases in November 2012 showed Lactobacillus cured BV and reduced vaginal inflammatory response of the pro-inflammatory cytokines. The Lactobacilli tablets were found to be better than the pH tablet in preventing BV in healthy subjects.
Lactobacillus Tablet Side Effects
Lactobacillus probiotic products are rated as Likely Safe by the Natural Medicines database. The strains actobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus plantarum have been used in studies of up to 9 months in length with low occurrence of side effects.
Adverse effects can include flatulence (gas) when first using these tablets. However, this effect usually subsides after a few days of adjusting to the use of a new probiotic product.
While probiotics are safe for the majority of adults and children, there is some concern that Lactobacillus bacteremia and sepsis could occur in patients with weakened immune systems or those who are severely ill.
Probiotics should not be taken by those with impaired immune systems such as organ donor recipients or those taking immunosuppressive medication. Those with SBS (Short Bowel Syndrome) and those with open surgical wounds should also avoid probiotics.
Milk based probiotics should be avoided by those allergic to milk or lactose tolerant. Unless directed otherwise by a health care professional probiotics should be avoided during pregnancy or while breast feeding.
Probiotic do interact with antibiotics and should be taken at least two hours apart from each other.
Lactobacillus tablets are a convenient way to take probiotics and are available in various forms to best meet the condition being treated. While probiotics are generally well tolerated, you should speak to your doctor before starting to use any new supplement product.
