Culturelle’s LactoGG ® is the registered trademark of the probiotic strain known by the name Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103).
This probiotic is acid and bile stable so it survives intact to reach the gut when supplemented orally.
Lactobacillus GG also produces lactic acid which has antibacterial properties and can inhibit the spread of pathogenic disease-causing bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.
LactoGG ® probiotic supplements are also used to help stop allergic reactions to peanuts in children and helps to prevent rotavirus diarrhea in children and other types of diarrhea in adults.
LactoGG® has been shown in clinical studies to help prevent URT’s (Upper Respiratory Tract infections) in children and is used to treat atopic dermatitis in high allergy risk children. This probiotic also reduces intestinal permeability in children with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
Studies on the Lactobacillus GG strain in mice have also shown lower levels of stress and anxiety when treated with this probiotic. The Lacto GG® probiotic was also shown in clinical studies to help women lose twice the amount of weight compared to those on the placebo.
There are a number of different Culturelle probiotic supplements that contain LactoGG along with other beneficial bacteria strains. Determining which product is right for you will depend on your reasons for taking the supplement as well as your health history.

Like other probiotic supplements, Lactogg® is used to improve the balance of good to bad bacteria in the digestive system. The population of bacterial found inside our gastrointestinal tract is referred to as the microbiome.
When the biome becomes over-populated with bad bacteria, a state of internal dysbiosis can occur. This can lead to digestive problems such as diarrhea, stomach pain, irritable bowel syndrome, increased risk of infection and more.
Supplementing the diet with a probiotic like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) helps to restore balance to the microbiome. By seeding the gut with good probiotic organisms, we can inhibit the growth of bad bacteria as well as support a number of digestive processes.
Research shows that there are a number of benefits from taking Lacto GG® products. This probiotic may stimulate the immune system, provide relief from constipation and IBS symptoms, help improve blood sugar control, reduce allergic reactions, decrease the frequency of colds and flus as well as promote weight loss and help improve cholesterol levels.
LactoGG for the Immune System
A clinical study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition in October 2015 showed LactoGG secreted products had an anti-inflammatory effect.
This probiotic was able to directly protect human colonic SMC (Smooth Muscle Cells) from LPS-induced myogenic (muscle) damage. LPS (lipopolysaccharide) is an endotoxin that produces the septic shock component of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria.
The clinical study concluded LactoGG -derived products could reduce the risk of progression to a post-infective motor disorder. Motor disorders occur in the nervous system and cause abnormal and involuntary movements.
LactoGG for Diarrhea
A clinical study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases in April 2014 showed Lactobacillus GG has a positive immunomodulatory effect and helped to decrease repeated episodes of rotavirus diarrhea.
Children aged from 6 months to five years with rotavirus and cryptosporidial gastroenteritis being treated with LactoGG once daily for four weeks showed improvement in intestinal function.
Children with cryptosporidial gastroenteritis showed improvements in intestinal permeability and children with the rotavirus showed increases in IgG (Immunoglobulin, an antibody found in blood and Extracellular fluid (ECF), body fluid outside cells) levels.
The clinical study concluded there was a role of probiotics in the treatment of intestinal impairment after infection.
LactoGG for General Health
A clinical study published in Pediatric Research in March 2015 showed probiotic supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) in the first six months of life may reduce the risk of neuropsychiatric disorder development later in childhood. It is thought this benefit may not be just limited to gut microbiota composition.
Contraindications
LactoGG is considered safe for the majority of users and has a low risk of side effects. In some cases, users report diarrhea, bloating or gastrointestinal stress when first taking probiotic supplements that contain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103).
Culturelle’s LactoGG products should not be used by anyone with a compromised immune system, open surgical wounds or those using a catheter. People with SBS (Short Bowel Syndrome) should also avoid all probiotics due to the potential risk for infection. This probiotic may not be suitable for IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction) patients.
Lactobacillus GG has been established as safe to take during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. However, you should speak to your doctor to determine the appropriate way to use LactoGG supplements if you are pregnant or nursing.
Probiotics do interact with anti-biotics and should be taken at least two hours apart from each other to prevent interaction. Lactobacillus GG is appropriate for individuals who are lactose intolerance and is sometimes used to treat symptoms of this disorder. However, you should check with a doctor before using it for this reason.
Lactogg ® probiotics help allergic conditions, diarrhea, enhance immunity and are useful for treating IBS. For women it is useful as an aid in weight loss.
