LJ100 is a standardized tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) supplement extracted from the root of the plant using high-pressure water extraction.
LJ100 is standardized to contain 40 % glycosaponins and 22 % eurypeptides. There are a number of different supplements that contain this 100:1 Pharmaceutical Grade longjack extract, typically at a dosage of between 25mg – 100 mg per serving.
Tongkat ali is the traditional name for Eurycoma longifolia, a tall, shrubby tree that is indigenous to the sandy soil of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It is also known as Malaysian ginseng or long jack (hence LJ100).
Tongkat ali is traditionally used in Malaysia as an aphrodisiac, antipyretic (reduce fever), anti-malarial, anti-diabetic and antimicrobial medicine. [2]
Today, LJ100 tongkat ali is used for a number of conditions, including erectile dysfunction, impotence, infertility and to improve athletic performance and physical strength.
Tongkat ali is believed to increase testosterone levels, which may impact sexual function and desire while supporting muscle development and strength. It is also purported to promote “sexual enhancement, pleasure, arousal and better performance.”

- Aphrodisiac & male sexual enhancer
- Increases testosterone & sperm motility
- Improves muscle mass, strength & mood
How does LJ100 Tongkat Ali Work?
LJ100 Tongkat ali is often used in the hopes of increasing testosterone levels in the body.
Tongkat ali has been observed to increase testosterone levels in rats, but there is limited scientific evidence for the plant’s ability to exert the same effect in humans. In addition, tongkat ali has been observed to exhibit aphrodisiac effects in rat studies.
How does LJ100 affect testosterone levels? While mainly thought of as a male hormone, women also produce testosterone. However, testosterone levels in women are, on average, 80 % less than those in men.
One of the only studies available on the relationship between tongkat ali and hormone production involved a study of 76 men suffering from late-onset hypogonadism, a condition where males do not produce enough testosterone or have an impaired ability to produce sperm.
Participants were given 200 mg of water-soluble tongkat ali extract for one month. Individuals who received tongkat ali had significantly higher serum blood concentrations of testosterone compared to baseline levels. Participants also reported reduced symptoms of hypogonadism. [3]
In a separate study, a daily dose of 400 mg tongkat ali for five weeks was observed to increase testosterone levels and muscle strength in both elderly men and women. [4]
While these results have indicated LJ100 tongkat ali may increase testosterone levels in individuals with low hormone levels, more research is needed to determine what effect tongkat ali has on young, healthy individuals.
Additionally, there is evidence that tongkat ali does not improve endurance or performance in male recreational athletes. [2]
LJ100 Tongkat Ali Effects
The way LJ100 tongkat ali impacts testosterone levels is still the subject of study. Some researchers suspect tongkat ali may increase testosterone production in Leydig cells, the cells contained in the male testes that are responsible for testosterone production.
Additionally, long jack may help release bound testosterone, thus increasing blood serum levels.
In preliminary animal studies, eurycomanone, a component of tongkat ali, was observed to exhibit anti-estrogenic effects. [2]
Testosterone and estrogen are closely connected in the human body and the anti-estrogenic activity may play a role in testosterone levels.
Tongkat Ali and Male Infertility
In one study, a specific tongkat ali supplement was given to men with infertility for between three and nine months.
Men receiving tongkat ali were observed to have higher semen volume and had more normal sperm morphology and motility. In addition, 14.7 % of participants experienced a spontaneous pregnancy after treatment. [2]
LJ100 Customer Reviews
Customer reviews of LJ100 tongkat ali on Amazon.com are mixed. Some users report improvement in symptoms of infertility and low libido while other users report no effect.
Safety and Side Effects of LJ100
The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates tongkat ali as “Possibly Safe” when taken orally and appropriately. Studies involving long jack have lasted for up to nine months.
However, there are no studies on specific LJ100 tongkat ali supplements. In addition, there are no studies available on the long-term safety of tongkat ali supplementation.
According to Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D., high dosages of this supplement can cause size effects. Taking more than 50mg at a time can cause “irritability, aggressiveness, increased body temperature, and insomnia”.
If you experience these adverse effects, use a smaller dosage or take this supplement on alternating days.
According to Dr. Sahelian, “The inventors of this trademarked product suggest women take 50 mg and men take 100 mg but we have found that most people report this is too high a dose for them.”
Pregnant and/or breastfeeding women should avoid this supplement because there is insufficient evidence to understand its effect on fetuses and babies.
Tongkat ali may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. Anyone diagnosed with a medical condition or taking prescription medications should speak with their doctor before taking LJ 100 tongkat ali.
In all cases, speak with your doctor before taking tongkat ali to make sure the supplement is right for you.
Conclusion
Tongkat ali has a long history of traditional use to improve libido, reduce fever, treat diabetes and act as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-malarial compound.
The plant holds a revered place in Malaysian culture and it remains illegal to harvest tongkat ali from the wild.
Some studies have indicated tongkat ali may help improve testosterone levels in those suffering from low testosterone. It has also been observed to improve sperm profiles in infertile men. However, there is no evidence to suggest taking LJ100 tongkat ali on its own improves athletic performance in otherwise healthy individuals.
