Nootropics have been around since the 1960s, but have only recently come of age in the USA and most other Western countries.
In the past 40 years there have been some astounding developments in neuroscience and neuropharmacology leading to a better understanding of how the brain works and how nootropics can improve brain power.
The original nootropic supplements like Piracetam, Aniracetam and Oxiracetam still work but are quickly being replaced by supplements like Pramiracetam and Noopept that are significantly stronger. And research into new nootropics continues at a rapid pace.
What are some of the new cognitive enhancers that have achieved promising results so far? Some of the most interesting for our purposes include Sunifiram, Unifiram, Phenylpiracetam, and Coluracetam.

Sunifiram is a relatively new entry into the Nootropics field, although its first studies and results were published back in 2000.
This supplement is actually fairly similar to Piracetam (the original Nootropic) in structure, but it does have a much higher potency which is reported to be around 1,000 times stronger.
This is considered to be an Ampakine since it works by stimulating the AMPA receptors in the brain, in a relatively similar fashion to that of most other Ampakine Nootropics.
This supplement is primarily effective for helping to induce cognitive and anti-amnesia effects. Significant increases in memory have been reported by a number of users.
The supplement has also been observed to improve attention spans, learning, decision making, and alertness levels. It is even being cited as stronger than Noopept, with a slightly higher recorded potency.
At the moment, it would appear that Sunifiram is actually a better memory booster than Noopept (although Noopept does appear to have a slight edge with enhancing mood and reducing anxiety).
Sunifiram seems to have stimulant effects without the negative side effects and with very low toxicity on the brain. You can buy it relatively inexpensively and your supply will last a long time since the effective dosage for this compound is so low.
It is currently being used off-label by people who want to achieve better focus and alertness for school or work. With further testing and more published results, the popularity of this new Nootropic could go through the roof.
We think this one is destined for great things and it may well become one of the best-selling cognitive enhancers in the near future.
Unifiram:
As the name suggests, Unifiram is very similar to Sunifiram and consequently Piracetam.
It is also quite potent, working at approximately the same intensity level as Sunifiram (about 1,000 times stronger than Piracetam).
The substance is an Ampakine, modulating AMPA receptors in the brain and also influencing the brain’s Glutamate uptake.
This helps to improve the communications between neurons as well as stimulating the production of Acetylcholine, one of the most powerful and important neurotransmitters involved in a number of cognitive processes.
Ultimately, the methods of action for Unifiram are fairly similar to those of other Nootropics, especially Noopept, Oxiracetam, Pramiracetam, and their other Racetam cousins.
Although there has been less research into this one than some of the other “new” supplements in this category, it also has some very promising results. This includes the ability to significantly improve memory, learning capacity, attention spans, mental energy, focus, and general cognition.
It also tends to improve the overall health of the brain and the efficiency of neuronal cell functioning. The supplement also seems to have anti-amnesia effects similar to that of Sunifiram and it is also quite strong.
Currently, Unifiram is not as popular as Sunifiram due to higher costs associated with synthesizing it in a lab.

- Focus longer, clear brain fog & feel more motivated
- Boost energy, alertnes & memory
- Contains 12 safe and natural nootropic ingredients
Phenylpiracetam:
Although this Racetam has been around for a while, Phenylpiracetam is only recently starting to attract more widespread attention. This is essentially a modified version of Piracetam.
A phenyl molecule group has been attached to the original structure. This appears to offer a number of interesting additional benefits and it multiplies the potency by a factor of 60.
Phenylpiracetam is almost 100% bioavailable and has very good penetration of the blood brain barrier. In addition to providing all of the same benefits that Piracetam is noted for, it also has unique effects on physical performance.
It was actually originally developed in Russia to increase tolerance to cold and stress. It has also been used by professional athletes to improve coordination and reaction times.
Phenylpiracetam experiences usually cite an improved memory and learning capacity, enhanced attention span, overall improved focus, concentration, and better general cognition. Energy and motivation are actually increased to a degree similar to Adderall.
Also, the stimulating effects upon the central nervous system are a bit longer lasting and do not have the same negative side effects. It can also reduce motion sickness, prevent and reduce the effects of amnesia, and even possibly reduce fatigue following sleep deprivation.
Colouracetam:
Coluracetam is another interesting new Racetam Nootropic supplement that is currently undergoing research and clinical testing. During 2010 Phase IIA trials, it was determined to be more effective than a placebo for treating anxiety and certain depression-like symptoms.
Other benefits include vision improvement, feelings of well-being and contentment, greater perceptual awareness and a full range of cognitive enhancement effects.
It is thought to work by increasing and enhancing the uptake of Choline.
This, of course, leads to higher levels of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine within the brain, which is primarily responsible for increased memory, learning capacity, attention span, focus, concentration, brain energy, improved general cognition, and possibly even better overall brain health and function.
This list only scratches the surface of some of the more recent discoveries in the world of smart drugs and brain supplements. With a number of these “new” Nootropics hitting the scene and generating increased attention and interest, there is huge promise for the future development of this class of supplements.
We are also beginning to see the continued commitment of science and pharmaceutical companies to the development of the latest Nootropics. The future of these supplements should be indeed exciting.
