An interesting class of nootropics that has been growing in both interest and scope is the category of nootropics for libido enhancement.
Libido is defined as the physiological and emotional energy associated with the sex drive. The concept of libido was introduced originally by Sigmund Freud.
Freud theorized that all of life’s constructive activity was directly related a person’s libido. Although his theory cannot be scientifically analyzed, it continues to be debated to this day.
Can you increase your sex drive and libido using nootropics? It does seem that many of life’s joys are intricately connected in some way to our libido. Note that the definition of libido is not about one’s physical ability to engage in sexual activity, but instead refers to the physiological and emotional energies leading to arousal.
Arousal, though commonly related to our drive for sex, can refer to the rising up of energies toward any of life’s drives. This distinction is an important one because libido is directly affected by both our physical and our mental processes.

Some people seem to be driven by their libido while others report higher productivity when their sex drive is suppressed to some degree, but a healthy libido is usually necessary for a sense of well-being.
A depressed libido can be due to both physical and/or neurological processes and can affect every aspect of a person’s life.
There are many causes for a decrease in, or loss of, one’s libido. These causes include stress, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, ageing, hormonal imbalances, alcohol, medications or drugs, and relationship issues.
This article will address how nootropics may offer a means of increasing or restoring your libido.
The Brain and Libido
Though men and women are somewhat different with regards to sexual arousal, there remain many similarities between the two.
Both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are responsible for sexual arousal in both sexes. Simplistically put, the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for sexual arousal while the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for orgasms in both sexes, and erections and ejaculation in males.
A healthy libido requires a balanced synergy between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This synergy is dependent on a number of factors including the neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine which have all been shown to have marked pro-libido effects.
Desire and arousal is created in the brain primarily by dopamine. If dopamine levels are low, then interest in sex will decrease and energy for sex becomes suppressed. In addition, low dopamine levels have a direct effect on your performance.

Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine is a popular nootropic used to boost memory, learning ability and focus, among other things. It is the most prevalent neurotransmitter in the brain and is the key neurotransmitter for memory encoding. It is also a useful supplement for increasing libido because it affects both the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems.
Arousal is initiated by the neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine. Adding a quality source such as Alpha-GPC or Citicoline to your stack is a great foundation for a healthy libido.
Galantamine and Huperzine A
Both of these supplements are natural inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme which is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine in our brains.
Galantamine Hydrobromide and Huperzine A from the Huperzia Serrata plant effectively work to inhibit this enzyme and, by doing so, allow our acetylcholine levels to increase, and along with it, our libido can increase. These supplements also offer numerous other benefits for the mind in addition to improving sexual desire.
Serotonin Boosters
Inositol works by aiding in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for our feelings of overall well-being. Adding Inositol to your stack can boost serotonin levels which can reduce stress and increase libido. It is also known to help regulate sleep and to reduce anxiety.
Having balanced serotonin levels creates an environment in which feelings of well-being can occur. This is integral for developing a state of arousal which is why Serotonin boosters make for excellent nootropic aphrodisiacs.
Dopamine Boosters
Boosting dopamine is important for a healthy libido. Sulbutiamine increases dopamine neurotransmitter levels and dopamine (D1) receptor density in our prefrontal cortex.
Sulbutiamine appears to have the effect of increasing the amount of dopamine circulating within the brains and thereby increasing our sense of well-being, decreasing anxiety while simultaneously promoting a healthy libido.
Several other nootropics may have a positive effect on libido because of their dopaminergic capacity, as well. Some of these are 5-HTP, Bacopa, Green Tea, L-Tyrosine, Vitamin B12 and Phenylalanine.
Aniracetam
High levels of anxiety have a direct effect on libido and sexual performance. Decreasing anxiety allows both the brain and the body to experience sexual arousal and pleasure more readily and easily.
Aniracetam is not only a popular cognitive booster, but is also an effective anxiolytic. In most individuals, it noticeably decreases anxiety levels which has a positive effect on libido.
Are There “Anti-Libido” Nootropics
There are many nootropics for boosting your libido, but some may have a negative effect. Although each individual may respond differently to a nootropic supplement, based on their individual brain chemistry, some nootropics have been discussed as libido suppressors more often than others.
One of these is the very popular racetam-derived supplement, Noopept. Not everyone experiences an anti-libido effect, but it is a warning passed among users. The effect is not lasting and usually subsides when the user stops taking the supplement. It is unknown why some people experience it and others do not.

Inositol does NOT boost serotonin, its a secondary messanger involved in post synaptic 5ht receptors. Also, research has shown for years that boosting serotonin decreases libido.
..and how do you know this?
This is common knowledge.. It’s true what Dave said, and also Inositol only increases the sensitivity that our neurons have for serotonin, and does not increase the production itself.
