Today it seems like everyone could use a boost in their energy levels and motivation.
Whether you are constantly feeling burned out, suffering from depression or simply need to overcome procrastination, taking supplements for increased motivation has become commonplace.
We are well accustomed to drinking energy drinks and using stimulants like caffeine to increase mental drive, but more and more people are looking into taking nootropics for this very purpose.
Nootropics are a class of supplements initially designed by neuroscientists to increase cognitive function. But many of these compounds also produce additional benefits such as increasing overall energy, mental vitality, improving mood and helping you get motivated.

In general terms, most Nootropics are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and entering the central nervous system.
Once this occurs, they then modulate the actions and levels of a number of different neurotransmitters. Many of these powerful brain chemicals actually mediate cognitive processes like memory formation, learning, logical reasoning, and decision making to name a few.
Of course, there are some neurotransmitters such as Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin which are believed to play a role in areas like mood, stress relief, and even increasing motivation.
Many Nootropics also help enhance mental performance and brain energy supply on a more fundamental level. This includes increasing the blood flow to the brain. This enhanced cerebral circulation also increases oxygen uptake and possibly even improves glucose metabolism in your neurons.
If you are experiencing drowsiness or fatigue, these small changes caused by nootropics can help you feel more awake and alert. Some nootropic supplements also exert an anxiolytic or anti-anxiety effect which can also increase productivity and drive. Let’s take a look at some of the best nootropics for energy boosting.
Phenylpiracetam:
One of the strongest Nootropics is called Phenylpiracetam or Phenotropil and belongs to the Racetam category.
It is very similar in terms of molecular structure to piracetam but a Phenyl group of molecules has been added onto the original supplement. This results in a number of additional effects including the ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier much more easily.
Consequently, Phenylpiracetam is known to be 60 times more potent than Piracetam. In addition to providing the same mind enhancing effects of Piracetam, Phenylpiracetam also leads to stimulation of the Central Nervous System producing significant amounts of mental energy.
What is interesting is that people say it gives more of a clean type of stimulation (similar to Adderall) without the spike and crash associated with some energy pills. Phenylpiracetam is also mood boosting, increasing activation of dopamine receptors so that you feel happier and less anxious. The combination can result in a seriously intense feeling of motivation and confidence.
Reviews often say that taking this Nootropic puts them in a highly focused and purpose-driven state of wanting to get things done. Athletes can also use this supplement and will see their stamina, recovery, and endurance abilities all increased.

Modafinil/Adrafinil:
Modafinil and Adrafinil are very closely related drugs with a lot of benefits for improving wakefulness and attention. In fact, Adrafinil is actually converted into Modafinil during its break down process within the liver.
These drugs were originally developed for treating patients with serious sleep disorders like narcolepsy. They are also used by many people who have Attention Deficit Disorder, excessive fatigue, and sleep apnea.
As a potent wakefulness agent, Modafinil can increase your perceptual awareness and lessen the feeling of strain during periods of prolonged mental exertion. Many user reviews say that Modafinil helps you zone in on your work so that you are impervious to distraction until you have reached your goals.
The profile of these supplements is also significantly different than other types of amphetamines like Adderall, although its power is indeed comparable. Modafinil and Adrafinil are also much less likely to lead to unwanted side effects like jitteriness, anxiety, or any associated withdrawal crash.
Noopept:
Noopept is a Nootropic supplement that was developed in Russia in the 1990s. Despite the fact that it is often grouped together with the Racetam family of Nootropics, its method of action is decidedly different and it technically has a peptide structure.
It works by increasing Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and also Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). These help to make this one of the most effective Nootropics, with a reported potency approaching 1,000 times that of Piracetam.
Noopept offers a more balanced increase to motivation levels by working on acetylcholine and glutamate receptors. It provides less of a stimulant effect, but does have a moderate associated increase in energy levels.
The main benefit is in improving your working memory capacity which increase concentration and attentiveness. You may find that with as little as 10 mg per day, Noopept reduces brain fog and gives you advanced clarity, focus and cognition.
While the two previously mentioned drugs should not be used every day, Noopept can be taken daily and may even get stronger with time.
Bacopa:
This Nootropic agent is an all-natural supplement, coming from plants which grow in wetlands throughout India and other tropical regions. If you prefer taking herbal supplements as opposed to synthetic compounds, then Bacopa Monnieri might be the best option for you.
It works by amplifying the effects of several neurotransmitters in the brain and by increasing the electrical conductivity of your brain cells. This can make communication between your neurons faster, giving a natural boost to motivation and energy levels.
Bacopa increase activity of Acetylcholine and Serotonin, resulting in both enhanced brainpower and lower anxiety levels.
Other Nootropics To Consider:
There are a number of additional energy and motivation boosters in the Nootropic camp. Pramiracetam is a great Racetam nootropic for giving you intense amounts of focus and concentration. It would work very well in a nootropic cycle when rotating with Phenylpiracetam.
Another great candidate is L-Theanine, which is the main ingredient found in the leaves of green tea. It exerts a noticeable effect upon both energy and motivation while also lowering stress levels.
Another interesting all-natural Nootropic is caffeine. While most people would not think about this at first glance, it is indeed a Nootropic supplement, and a very effective one at that. Caffeine and Theanine can also be taken together, as part of a stack, to really supercharge your energy and motivation.

Hi-
Thank you for the great information but I am getting major info overload. Hopefully you can help me direct me.
I am looking for some recommendations for energy, focus and motivation without a “crash”. I read up on every ‘finil, ‘tam, AlphaBrain out there. I just need a bit more clear suggestion.
Thank you!
B
Hi Beth,
I think Alpha Brain is great for users who have never taken nootropics before. It is non-caffeinated so does not cause an energy crash and contains L-tyrosine to heighten motivation while other ingredients boost focus and mental power.
Thank you so much for the response. Alpha is what you suggest before any others? I need consistent energy and focus. Im trying to overcome some very foggy, unproductive, drag ass feelings. It can be very discouraging to someone such as myself who is capable of so much more than just trying to stay afloat.
Thanks again!

Hi,
Really enjoyed this, especially the breakdown of the neurochemical effects of each nootropic. In my research, it seems that noopept has dramatically different effects on different people. For me personally, it’s a great focus agent and anxiolytic, having effects somewhat akin to to aniracetam.
This also seems to hold true with adrafinil: on the surface, it looks like a “wonder drug” solution to getting all the benefits of modafinil without the side effects. However, it seems like the mood effects vary person to person.
What’s most interesting to me is starting to define these terms like “motivation”, “productivity”, etc. I think productivity is easier to measure, since you can set up an environment to isolate certain variables (eg, how much work can I complete in my [location] on [day of the week] in [amount of time]). I recently wrote about 3 nootropics that could increase productivity here:

Finding nootropics that consistently help *motivate* users is, imo, the holy grail of this whole smart drugs experiment. But as with most nootropics, the ones that motivate best tend to build tolerance, too. Noopept is great in that this tolerance effect doesn’t seem to have any negative side effects when I withdrawal from taking it.
Cheers,
Dan
I’m going to try Teacrine for energy/motivation. I’ve tried Noopept and had a pleasant feeling, but not that much energy or motivation. I’ve also tried Piracetam and it’s okay. Bacopa didn’t do anything to my energy/motivation. Would it be smart to take Teacrine Monday, Wednesday, Friday. And take Caffeine and L-Theanine Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday with Sunday off. Could this cycle work or is it misguided. I can’t really tell.
