One of the most popular Rhodiola rosea supplements that is marketed directly as a performance enhancing alternative therapy, is Nutrilite Rhodiola 110.
This product is more widely recognized in the US as opposed to countries such as the UK. The product is manufactured by Amway and available from their site as well as many others on-line.
Each tablet in Nutrilite’s formulation contains 110 mg of Rhodiola extract alongside 85 mg of caffeine from green tea extract. The recommended serving is two tablets.
The marketing of the product is directly focused not only on enhancing physical endurance, but also refers to improving mental stamina. Although the ingredient list states the product contains Rhodiola rosea there is no specific reference made to the products content of salidrosides, which is one of the primary active ingredients in the plant.
It does however claim to be manufactured to contain a consistent level of rosavins. This allows for standardized dosing even with different strength plant extracts. Nutrilite Rhodiola supplements also provides caffeine obtained through green tea.
Unlike many other complexes containing Rhodiola Rosea, this product is designed to act as a stimulant for weight loss rather than a stress reliever.

- Adaptogenic herb for reducing stress
- Boosts energy, focus & mood
- May reduce sleep problems & irritability
Nutrilite Rhodiola 110 Reviews
Related Topics
Reviews for Nutrilite Rhodiola Rosea 110 are widely available and, in most cases, are said to reflect very good results. Low ratings are very few.
Most reviewers use this product specifically to boost energy and it would seem the product meets their needs. Additionally there are few side effects and contraindications.
Most of the issues relate to the caffeine content rather than any problems arising from the herbal supplement itself. However the caffeine content in one capsule (two are recommended) is only equal to one cup of coffee.
Whether the stimulating effects of either of the main ingredients is of most benefit, or whether attributed to the combined properties, is unsubstantiated by research.
Nutrilite Rhodiola pills are said to promote increased mental focus and to give a quick energy pick-me-up. The manufacturer also says this supplement helps users push themselves with more vigorous workouts. Finally, it is said to shorten recovery time after working out by improving the body’s reaction to stress.
One negative of this brand is the very high price of the product. The bottle of 60 tablets sells for $45.65 on their website which is $0.76 per tablet. If you use the recommended serving of two tablets, this is an effective price of $1.52 per serving.
This is almost 10 times higher than the cost at comparable vendors in the USA. For this reason, we recommend buying from lower cost vendors that still provide high quality product online.
What are the Benefits of Rhodiola?
Back in 1990, a former Soviet Union athletics coach was one of the first to bring to the US the secrets of Rhodiola rosea. Dr Ben Tabachnik coached Russian Olympic athletes prior to emigrating to the US.
When there, he began to extoll the virtues of the herbal supplement and encourage use by US athletes to increase competitive advantage. This ensured that the first products formulated from Rhodiola rosea were targeted at athletes. Nutrilite 110 is one such product.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the supposed benefits were proved to have a scientific basis by Western researchers. A book published by Dr Zakir Ramazanov uncovered not only new research findings but also top secret studies undertaken by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
These studies focused primarily on how Rhodiola rosea could provide Russia with a competitive advantage in many fields. Not only did they study the impact on athletes at the Olympic level, but also within politics, the military and business.
Considering the background research, it is hardly surprising that the fields of sport and athletics became attuned to the benefits much sooner than other areas.
Within this arena the focus has been primarily seen to benefit sportsmen and women by improving stamina and reducing injury time. It is also used to promote weight loss and fat burning.
Rhodiola and Sport Performance
Research studies have been undertaken to analyse the effects on not only sportsmen and women, but also on the body chemistry influenced by such exertion.
In one study it was found that consumption of Rhodoloa rosea reduced plasma free fatty-acid levels. Additionally it was found that it lowered blood lactate and plasma creatine kinase levels. Effects on performance, antioxidant, and inflammatory issues, did however appear to be insignificant.
It may be able to increase oxygen utilization in the body. One study which measured VO2 Max (volume of oxygen consumed while exercising at maximum capacity) found there were statistically significant improvements.
These results were found when Rhodiola rosea extract with 3% Rosavin and 1% Salidroside was taken within 1 hour of the test commencing. A more recent study published in 2011 however found few if any beneficial effects.
It might be noted though that the extract given to participants in this research provided 3% Rosavin with no mention of standardized Salidroside dosing. Since much research and anecdotal evidence suggests the two in a particular ratio are necessary, then the basis of this research may be flawed.
This is one reason why it would be ideal to know what the salidroside content of Nutrilite Rhodiola is.
Nutrilite Rhodiola Side Effects
This product is not recommended for children under 12 years old or for pregnant and nursing women. Consumption of this product is not advises for individuals who are sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine content should be limited on days when this supplement is consumed to prevent over-stimulation.
Nutrilite Rhodiola 110 may interact with certain medications used to treat ADHD, depression, colds and obesity. It should not be used with other stimulants including amphetamine drugs.
The caffeine content in this product may increase central nervous system activity too much and cause irritability, nervousness, difficutly sleeping, heart arrhythmia, seizure or gastrointestinal discomfort.
While Rhodiola rosea has few known side effects, it is best to speak to your doctor before using this supplement to determine whether it is contraindicated for you.
Rhodiola Differentials
Rhodiola extract is one of the more recent herbal supplements to be recognized by contemporary medicine. Attempts to establish the effects and chemical compounds are confused by several different issues.
Firstly there are many different species of Rhodiola growing around the globe. Although these plants, in most cases have medicinal properties, they are not all the same. This is because the chemical compounds contained within Rhodiola plants differ.
Not only that, but the compounds themselves differ between plants which are presumed to be the same. One Rhodiola rosea plant is not the same as the next and this means that one supplement might not be the same as the next.
Again, other than certain compounds working in harmony, such as the rosavins and salidroside, no one is certain as to how the combinations of chemicals produce the desired results. In supplements like Nutrilite Rhodiola all these factors contribute toward making it difficult for researchers to provide sound foundations and accurate findings.
As can be seen from the previous mentioned studies, surface information may appear to be contradictory, but different compounds may have been measured.
