Nutrition Now is the manufacturer of a potent probiotic blend called PB 8.
Each capsule contains eight different lactic acid bacteria, all of which are known to have probiotic effects.
PB 8 also contains a prebiotic. Prebiotics act as a stimulant for probiotic bacteria and are considered helpful, particularly in the large intestinal area.
PB 8 supplemental capsules provide billions of friendly live bacteria (at the time of manufacture) which promote healthy digestion, inhibit growth of harmful bacteria and favorably change the microflora within the gastrointestinal tract.
Although the exact quantity of each bacteria used in the Nutrition Now PB 8 probiotic formula is considered proprietary, the manufacturer openly shares the names of the eight species used in their supplement.
Collectively, there are 14 billion live bacteria within each capsule at the time of manufacture. Each capsule consists of a blend of five Lactobacillus species and three Bifidobacteria species.

Probiotics work by inhibiting the growth and colonization of pathogenic bacteria throughout the gastrointestinal tract, vagina and mouth.
Bacteria live in vast quantities within and on the human body, and, unless there is a disruption of some sort, most people will never need to pay attention to their microflora.
Adult GI tracts are estimated to contain more than three pounds of bacterial microbes at any given point in time. These microorganisms are constantly competing for space to colonize and for dominance.
When the flora is balanced, the probiotic bacteria aid in food digestion, create enzymes and some B vitamins, as well as exert influence over the immune function. When an imbalance occurs, we say the system is in a state of dysbiosis.
Dysbiosis can occur due to treatment with antibiotics, illness, stress, fast food diets, environmental factors or injury. Probiotic supplements are used to restore the gut flora back to a healthy state.
Many people eat on the run, which often means eating fast foods without enough nutritional content, too much sugar and lots of preservatives. While probiotics can’t offset an unhealthy diet, they do help by supplementing friendly bacteria which is missing from a diet when eating on-the-go.
Effects and Benefits of PB 8
A few studies have linked the probiotics in PB 8 to a reduction in yeast infections, though more research is needed in this area.
In general, the probiotics contained in PB 8 can increase the production of beneficial microorganisms and decrease colonization of unhealthy microbes.
There is some evidence suggesting that probiotics promote better immune function. Current research focuses on the connection between the gut flora and the immune system.
Over 70% of the immune system is within the gut. A few theories suggest inappropriate immune responses may be triggered due to an imbalance in gut microflora.
PB 8 probiotic supplements also contains a natural prebiotic called inulin. This is a fiber product which passes through the stomach and into the intestinal tract, providing substrates upon which probiotics can colonize.
Although prebiotics are not food for the probiotic bacteria, per se, they are extremely helpful in the fight to out-compete pathogenic bacterial agents.
Using PB 8 Capsules
PB 8 is an encapsulated supplement. The manufacturer recommends 2 capsules be taken daily. Many people take one in the morning and one with dinner. Each capsule is made of gelatin and water.
Each capsule of PB 8 contains the following 8 probiotic bacteria:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Bifidobacterium lactis
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- Lactobacillus salivarius
- Bifidobacterium bifidum
- Bifidobacterium longum
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Lactobacillus casei
All supplements should be used before their expiration date for best results.
PB 8 Review Conclusion
PB 8 may be useful for those with mild digestive disorders such as flatulence, bloating or mild abdominal discomfort. The manufacturer provides 14 billion live bacteria at the time of manufacture; however, there is no indication of how many actually survive until the time of ingestion.
The effectiveness of probiotic supplements is partly dependent on taking enough of the selected bacteria to reverse the unhealthy imbalance. Without appropriate viable amounts, this cannot occur.
For example, an individual experiencing antibiotic related diarrhea would typically supplement with 10-20 billion live bacteria for a period of 4-10 days. The quantity is important because, most often, the diarrhea is caused by an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria within the colon.
To out-compete the harmful bacteria, a significantly higher number of viable probiotic microbes are needed. Any less than this dose and the bacteria are unable to colonize to any real effect.
Once the system is properly restored, a lower dose can be taken.
Because there is no information available on the viability of the bacteria in PB 8 probiotic products at the time of ingestion, it is recommended only as a maintenance product, and not one for restoration of the microflora within the digestive tract.
Pregnant or nursing mothers should not take this probiotic supplement. Individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems should not take this probiotic unless under the express direction of your personal physician.
