Piracetam has long been recognized as one of the safest Nootropics that is still effective.
In comparisons with other Racetams, it offers the weakest potency level. This is understandable since it was in fact the very first Nootropic in the line to be synthesized.
This is also part of the reason why Piracetam is often recommended as the first nootropic for beginners to try. While the short-term benefits of Piracetam powder are well research, the verdict is still out on what the effects of this compound might be over the long haul.
Piracetam is about 60 years old at this point and there have not been any comprehensive clinical trials specifically examining the long-term effects and side effects of Piracetam.
However, there are a number of theories out there that suggest that there are positive Piracetam long term effects. Before deciding for yourself, it can be helpful to examine a number of different factors related to this question.
It should be noted that in the USA, Piracetam does not meet the qualifications of a dietary supplement and cannot be sold as such. While Piracetam has been used for years as a drug in other countries around the world, the FDA has not approved Piracetam as a drug to prevent or treat any conditions.
Piracetam is an unregulated, unscheduled compound, that has been added to the FDA’s list of investigational new drugs (IND).
Buying Piracetam in the US can be difficult due to FDA laws surrounding the sales, distribution, and labeling of compounds like Piracetam. However, it is legal to buy and own Piracetam for personal use, and many people will import from countries where the sale of Piracetam is legal.

How long do the effects of Piracetam last for? It may be that the benefits of this nootropic continue on after it has left your system.
There is some evidence to suggest that Piracetam is effective at leading to increased nerve growth. Some research suggests that brain can increase the number of neuron synapses in the brain.
The theory is that once these initial connections are built they will become self-sufficient and continue to develop and grow on their own. At the very least, the increase in synaptic pathways is believed to persist beyond the usage of Piracetam.
Much of this remains a question for future research. However, the addition of extra synapses and neuron connections could be a possible explanation for at least one of the mechanisms of action for Piracetam long-term effects, which is still not fully understood.
If Piracetam is indeed able to facilitate additional nerve growth, this would be a big breakthrough for medical science and could have a large number of potential applications.

Detoxifying Agent
Piracetam is also thought to work by acting as a detoxifying agent for certain conditions and deficiencies within the brain. One of the most notable of these is alcoholism.
It has been shown in a number of cases to actually reverse brain damage due to alcoholism. The theory here is that after using Piracetam to have these effects, the brain actually stays in a state of relative repair even when use has stopped.
Additional research has shown Piracetam to be helpful in other cases of cognitive related decline. These include Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Obviously, more research needs to be conducted in order to form a conclusion, but the initial results are promising. Even if this nootropic is not an actual treatment, it might be able to help with symptoms, side effects, or even be able to reverse some effects of these diseases.
Protecting The Cardiovascular System
Piracetam is also considered to be valuable in terms of protecting the cardiovascular system. This is done by improving the blood circulation to the brain and enhancing the uptake and efficiency of oxygen to and within the brain.
Together, these important effects may have a number of benefits for conditions such as cerebral insufficiency, Atherosclerosis, and Raynaud’s disease.
There is even some evidence suggesting that this compound can help improve after-care for stroke patients and serve as long-term treatment for clotting, coagulation, and vasospastic disorders like Deep Vein Thrombosis.
There is a lot of speculation and interest as to how many of the above benefits will result in real long-term effects and actual help, and this would be a good area for future cardiovascular research.
Improved Overall Brain Hemisphere Communication
Piracetam is thought to help improve overall communication between both hemispheres of the brain. This is possibly related to the excess of Nerve Growth Factor and the development of new synapses and connections that has been seen in studies on Piracetam.
These effects are especially evident within the Corpus Callosum, which is believed to serve as the main point of connection between the left and right halves of the brain.
There is a decent amount of evidence to suggest that these new synapses and connections continue to grow and develop even after ongoing use of Piracetam is discontinued, however more research is still needed in this area.

Enhanced Memory, Learning, Or Intelligence?
Another key issue is whether there are any long term gains in cognitive function resulting from the use of Piracetam.
At this point there are scientists, researchers, and actual users of all types that come down on both sides of the question.
Clearly, there is enough evidence to suggest that the Piracetam is effective at supplying short-term gains in areas ranging from memory and learning capacity to possibly even a boost (even if short lived) in intelligence.
But at this point it is rather unclear if any of these short-term gains can be sustained, especially after regular use of the compound has been discontinued.
That being said, many users do believe there is a cumulative benefit with Piracetam usage if you do continue it over a long period of time. This would mean the effects of the nootropic may actually increase with long-term usage which could point to potential for long term benefits.
Furthermore, to the degree that Piracetam is able to reduce signs of brain aging, it therefore may be able to improve overall longevity. You may not see this benefit with short-term dosing of Piracetam, but it has been hypothesized that taking it daily for a period of a few months or more may have significant implications for reducing age-related cognitive decline.
Possible Long Term Side Effects
Are there any Piracetam long term side effects that you should be concerned with? Nootropics in the Racetam family are all well-tolerated and safe with very low levels of toxicity.
So far there have not been any indications of long term side effects of Piracetam. One possible side effect that you may encounter is the Piracetam Headache and it is in theory possible that this side effect could become more prevalent with continuous usage if the Acetylcholine demands of the body are increased over time.
To treat this side effect, it is recommended that you take Piracetam with a choline source like Alpha GPC or Citicoline. Both of these nootropics are themselves considered to be very safe and to offer neuroprotective benefits above and beyond those of Piracetam.

How long after using Piracetam does it take to notice any benefits?
Thanks
Hi Heidi,
It’s different for everyone. Some people start to see effects in the first week while others can take two or more weeks. Usually, the first noticeable effect is that colors can seem slightly brighter and you may feel a greater capacity for focus and attention. If after two weeks you aren’t seeing any signs that it is working, adding a choline supplement or increasing the dosage (still within a safe range) may help.
