Having been around since the 1960’s, Piracetam is regarded as the first of the so-called smart drugs, or cognitive enhancers.
In fact, this compound has given rise to an entire classification known as Nootropics. Today, many people all over the world take Piracetam for a number of reasons.
However, unquestionably the most popular of these reasons is to help improve memory.
In the battle to improve our minds by retaining more knowledge, Piracetam is definitely something to consider adding to your arsenal.
What is the right way to use Piracetam to improve your memory?

- Promotes neuron health & synaptic plasticity
- Supports memory recall & learning

It is important to understand how Piracetam works to effect changes in our memory. Through information gained from research studies it is believed that essentially what this compound does is improve the functioning of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine and its receptor sites.
As Piracetam binds to these receptor sites it is believed to have a key effect upon increasing memory and learning capacity.
Piracetam is a positive allosteric modulator of Acetylcholine receptors which basically means it increases the rate of transfer by which Acetylcholine is received in your synaptic receptors (the bridges by which your neurons communicate to each other).
According to most theories of how Piracetam works for memory, this nootropic also modifies Glutamate, another powerful neurotransmitter. In addition to modifying the neurotransmitter itself, it binds to the AMPA Glutamate receptor sites, which are actually very similar and closely related to the Acetylcholine receptors.
Together, both of these actions are thought to help increase memory, learning, and cognition. We typically refer to these functions collectively as synaptic plasticity – a measure of how well your brain is able to create and maintain new connections between neurons.
It is important to note that while Piracetam has been used for years as either a prescription or over-the-counter drug in other countries around the world, in the USA the FDA has not approved Piracetam as a drug to prevent or treat any conditions.
In the US, Piracetam also does not fit the description of a dietary supplement and cannot be sold as such. Piracetam is an unregulated, unscheduled compound, that is now considered an investigational new drug (IND).
Consqeuently, buying Piracetam in the US can be difficult due to FDA laws surrounding the sales, distribution, and labeling of compounds like this. However, it is legal to buy and own Piracetam for personal use, and many people will import from countries where the sale of Piracetam is legal.
Enhancing Protein Synthesis
In addition to modulating Acetycholine and other neurotransmitter functions in the brain, Piracetam also has an effect on our cell membranes. The cell membrane is essentially a viscous fluid that allows proteins and other important substances to flow in an out of the cells.
Inside a neuron, the main job of these proteins is to transmit and receive chemical signals. Unfortunately, aging and other types of environmental (or even chemical) damage can affect these neuronal membranes, making them more rigid and not allowing the proteins to flow in and out.
Piracetam improves the synthesis, or creation and development, of these proteins. This also means that the brain can function and ‘fire’ much more efficiently, helping to increase memory capacity in the short term and long term.

Improved Neuronal Communication
Another effect of the protection and even regeneration of the cell membranes that Piracetam may be responsible for is improved communications between the neurons.
Many studies have also shown that this compound increases the transmission of information within the hippocampus section of the brain. This is also a vital area for memory, so as efficiency is improved here, so is our memory.
Piracetam is one of the safest memory boosters and lowest toxicity brain enhancing compound around. The effects of Piracetam leading to increased memory, learning, and general cognition have long been recognized by the scientific community.
Piracetam Choline Stack
To give yourself the best possible chance of improving memory and other cognitive functions, you should consider taking Piracetam together with choline.
As you begin taking Piracetam, the Acetylcholine receptor sites become more highly activated and will require additional Acetylcholine. Since this neurotransmitter is synthesized from choline, it stands to reason that supplying your body with more of this nutrient may help to meet this demand.
Choline can be obtained through the diet, however, most people today are at least a little deficient in this important substance. Supplementing with choline may help to improve levels of this nutrient in the body that may have been lacking.
Sometimes, users of Piracetam powder notice that they begin to develop headaches. The reason for this is due to the fact that the body does not have enough Acetylcholine being produced.
While the Piracetam itself will help a bit in this regard, more is sometimes required. As the receptor sites demand more, they tend to burn themselves out, resulting in the headaches.
Using a Choline and Piracetam for memory stack often tends to eliminate the Piracetam headaches by providing the source material needed to make more Acetylcholine. It is recommended to use a high quality source of choline such as Alpha GPC or CDP Choline (Citicoline) for the best results.

How to Take Piracetam for Memory
What dosage of Piracetam works best for improving your memory?
The most basic thing that anyone can do when they are taking Piracetam is to make sure they get enough.
Unlike other Nootropics, Piracetam requires a fairly large dose. Almost all of the clinical studies used at least 4.8 gram per day. Some even used more.
A common way to begin a Piracetam for memory regimen is by taking at least 1.6 grams 3 times per day. You may want to take as much as 4.8 grams of Piracetam powder in a single dosage, however that is up to individual preferences and sensitivities.
Another reason for spacing out the administrations is to combat the fact that this nootropic has a relatively short half-life. In many cases, this can be as short as 2-3 hours.
Also note the fact that this compound will affect each person in slightly different ways. Therefore, be prepared to notice even slight changes and pay attention to whatever effects are felt. Then adjust your own Piracetam for memory regimen and dosage either up or down.
If your goal is to naturally improve your memory using nootropics, try Piracetam to see how well it may work for your personal needs.

can children also use piracetam?
Hi Danny,
Before giving Piracetam to children, it is important to speak to your doctor. Only a licensed physician who knows the medical history of your child can determine what drugs or supplements are appropriate for them!
