Probiotic Pearls is a brand name of probiotic dietary supplements that are formulated to prevent occasional gas, bloating and constipation.
Probiotic supplements are used to restore, balance and maintain the microflora throughout the digestive tract, vagina and mouth. However, many of the products on the market today are not shelf-stable and need to be refrigerated in order for the bacteria to remain active.
Sometimes, by the time these supplements reach consumers, the majority of cultures have died and the product is no longer effective.
Probiotics Pearls are a novel delivery method for both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, assuring each microorganism is able to arrive safely and intact to their intended destinations.
Several different versions of Pearl Probiotics exist in the marketplace today offering choice between various strains of bacteria depending on your needs. One of the most popular products is the Acidophilus Once Daily Probiotic Pearls, which contains 1 billion live cultures and survives the stomach acid.
According to the manufacturer, “Taking Probiotic Pearls Acidophilus provides L. acidophilus for the small intestine and B. longum for the large intestine (colon) to help promote digestive balance and colon health, [and] support your body’s immune defense.”

Probiotics Pearls are manufactured in the state of Wisconsin by Schwabe North America.
The Pearls are sold in 30-pearl packages designed to provide up to a month’s probiotic support with a single purchase.
Cost can vary, depending on whether they are being purchased online or at a local health food shop. Online purchases are often more affordable due to the lack of overhead costs and staffing.
There are several different types of probiotics pearls, each specifically designed to address different consumer needs ranging from simple digestive disorders like bloating and gas, and extending to yeast balancing, as well as support for a healthy immune system.
Benefits of Probiotic Pearls
Probiotics Pearls were developed especially to make sure the bacteria within the tiny pearl-like capsule, remains viable so it can quickly colonize when released in the proper area of the gastrointestinal tract.
The manufacturer claims that other types of probiotics, particularly those encased in soft gelatin capsules, are unable to protect the delicate bacteria adequately as it makes its way to the small intestine and colon. The bacteria in these products are often destroyed as they pass through the harsh acids of the stomach.
What makes probiotics pearls so unique is their special protective coating. These small encapsulated pearls are coated with a particularly hard outer layer.
When the pearl is ingested, the enzymes and acids contained in the mouth and stomach work hard to break it down. The stomach is a particularly acidic region of the GI tract.
Upon leaving the stomach, foods which have been partially digested and are now in a semi-liquid state (referred to as chyme), move to the small intestine where the gastric acids are disarmed by bile salts and other chemical compounds.
The probiotics within the pearl, which have been dormant up until this point, are slowly released, rehydrated and resume normal bacterial functions. Acidophilus, one of the main components in all the probiotics pearl varieties, is particularly useful at this stage.
As the digestive process continues, Bifidobacterium also survives intact enabling it to colonize the colon where it is of most use.
Varieties and Uses
For general digestive health and for individuals experiencing digestive complaints like bloating, lactose intolerance and occasional flatulence, Acidophilus Pearls are often the best probiotic choice.
This Pearl supplement contains a combined potency of 1 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium Longum.
For suspected yeast overgrowth, Pearls YB is often selected. This supplement contains three species of Lactobacillus (acidophilus, rhamnosus and plantarum) which have been shown in studies to contribute to an intestinal environment in which yeast is properly balanced and modulated.
Pearls YB is sometimes taken in conjunction with antifungal medications. While the antifungal (like fluconazole) works to rid the digestive tract and vaginal area of the yeast overgrowth, the Lactobacillus microorganisms create an acidic environment which inhibits future overgrowth. These pearls contain 1 billion active microbes.
For more focused intestinal digestive care, Pearls IC is available. This product takes the power of Acidophilus Pearls and adds four additional strains of probiotic microbes: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, and Bifidobacterium lactis.
Working together, these six strains are designed to provide a more potent form of digestive support, particularly with regards to the colon. Between all six probiotic bacteria strains, 1 billion CFUs are contained in each pearl.
Pearls Elite is considered a powerhouse of bacterial probiotic goodness. This supplement contains two Lactobacillus strains (acidophilus and plantarum) and two Bifidobacterium strains (lactis and longum).
Each pearl contains a total of 5 billion active units. Many people use this pearl when an intestinal disruption has occurred. Pearls Elite is helpful for the restoration of balance in the gut microflora.
For optimal immune support, Pearls Immune provides a combined daily CFU count of 1 billion. The probiotic organisms consist of Lactobacillus (plantarum and acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium (lactis and longum).
For best results, the manufacturer suggests taking one pearl daily, either with a meal or within 20 minutes before a meal is consumed.
Side Effects
Probiotics Pearls are considered generally safe for most people.
Always talk with your doctor before starting any new health regimen.
