Propranolol is a sympatholytic non-selective beta blocker.
This type of beta blocker is used to treat a number of different conditions including hypertension, anxiety and panic. In fact, this drug was the first successful beta blocker ever developed.
It is available in a number of different forms and sold and marketed under a number of different names like Ciplar, Inderal, Avlocardyl, Deralin, Dociton, Inderalici, and others.
This drug is also thought to be potentially effective in the treatment of a number of additional diseases and conditions. It has even been used to help improve instances of stage fright and for controlling hand tremors (especially in surgeons before they perform operations).
It was developed by British scientist James W Black during the 1960’s. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery (in 1988).

Propranolol is a very effective and quick acting drug. The primary mechanism of action is for the pharmaceutical is to cross over the blood-brain barrier and enter into the central nervous system.
Once there, it begins to work by binding to several neurotransmitters. What it does is to inhibit the sympathetic nervous system by blocking the action of beta receptors in the systems’ nerves.
This works to reduce the action and activity, primarily, of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. By doing so, since this chemical influences a number of involuntary processes, Propranolol is able to reduce the heart rate and also treats abnormally rapid heart rhythms.
Another way in which this drug works is by reducing the force of contraction of the heart muscle. This is achieved through essentially the same mechanism of action described above. This also lowers the blood pressure, since there is less force pushing it through the circulatory system.
Both of these actions together reduce the need for oxygen by the heart, which can also be beneficial in treating heart pain (angina pectoris).

It also may be helpful at reducing the incidence and effects of nightmare related cardiac activity including higher pulse rates and increased adrenaline levels.
Propranolol Dosage:
The proper dosage level for Propranolol depends upon the purpose for its use in the first place. For example, as a treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure), the suggested dose is between 80 and 240 mg up to twice a day.
If you are able to find a longer-lasting formulation, then you should only need 80-160 mg per day. Never exceed a dose of 640 mg per day. When this drug is being used for help treating chest pain, then the dose would be 80 to 320 mg (160 mg if using a long-acting formulation).
For abnormal heart rhythms, you only need 10 to 30 mg, taken 3 to 4 times per day. For preventing migraines, take between 80 and 240 mg. Also, remember that this is a powerful and fast-acting drug. Therefore, you would be wise to start out with the lowest effective dose and only increase after being sure how the drug affects you.
Propranolol Side Effects:
