PS-100 is a supplement that contains 100mg of phosphatidylserine, a natural compound that is present in all of our cell membranes.
It is considered to be a phospholipid, composed of fatty acids, phosphoric acid and a nitrogenous base. Phospholipids are important constituent of membranes that help to ensure our cells are functioning properly and are structurally sound.
In particular, Phosphatidylserine is found in cell membranes of our neurons where it makes up between 7 and 10 percent of the lipid content.

When we experience stress due to exercise, environmental changes or mental conditions, our body releases cortisol. This hormone is beneficial in the short-term because it makes us better able to handle stressful situations, but if levels remain elevated for long periods of time it can start to cause problems.
High cortisol levels are associated with sleep problems, anxious moods, irritability and weight gain. Phosphatidylserine works to block the effects of cortisol and restore a normal balance.

We need our membranes to be in good shape in order to allow nutrients to be transported into the cells and waste products to be transported out. Membranes also have an important role to play in receiving messages and properly transmitting those messages within the cells.
Using PS-100 Phosphatidylserine on a daily basis may be able to prevent some types of damage to cell membranes that can be caused if there is inadequate supply of phospholipids. Supplementation has been shown to slow down the process of brain aging and to improve memory and mental performance.
In a 2011 study published in BioMedCentral Neurology, administering Phosphatidylserine extracted from bovine cortex was found to improve memory and learning. The study was conducted on elderly individuals complaining of memory problems but who had not been diagnosed with dementia.
Another study found that taking Phosphatidylserine increased the rate of glucose utilization in the brains of persons with Alzheimer’s disease by 15%. Glucose is the main energy source for the brain; an increased rate of glucose metabolism could suggest that brain activity levels are higher after taking phosphatidylserine.
However, this has not been researched extensively to date and has only been observed in patients with Alzheimer’s so far. In another study, 400mg of Phosphatidylserine was observed to increase the processing speed and processing accuracy of adults in a fatigued state post-exercise.
Additional research has looked at the benefits of Phosphatidylserine on improving athletic performance. In one study, 750 mg of soybean-derived phosphatidylserine was administered for 10 days to determine whether it improved exercise capacity in male cyclists. The study looked at oxygen uptake kinetic response, neuroendocrine function, and asked participants to rate their state of mind following exhaustive intermittent exercise.
This study did find that 750 mg of PS has a positive effect on exercise capacity, with possible ergogenic properties. However, in another study, 750 mg of PS did not delay the onset of muscle soreness or markers of muscle damage, inflammation and oxidative stress following prolonged running.
How to Take PS-100
There are several different brands of PS-100 on the market and the manufacturers of each may recommend different dosages. Follow the directions on the label of the product you buy or speak to your doctor for personalized dosage advice. The manufacturers of PS-100 Plus recommend taking 1-3 capsules a day with food.
This supplement contains 100 mg of phosphatidylserine, meaning the recommended dose is between 100 to 300 mg per day. PS-100 Plus also contains 25 mg of phosphatidylcholine, 15 mg of phosphatidylethanolamine, and 15 mg of phosphatidylinositol.
Phosphatidylserine has a safe user profile, but may cause mild side effects such as insomnia and stomach upset if used in dosages above 300mg. Negative effects like excessive sweating, indigestion and diarrhea may be prevented when taking this supplement with food.
Some forms of PS are derived from bovine (cow) cortexes. Animal sources may be more likely to contain impurities; there may be a small risk of disease transmission such as mad cow disease.
While no cases of disease transmission have been recorded, it is recommended to find a soy source of phosphatidylserine to use. You may want to select a PS-100 supplement that is clearly denoted as being from a vegetarian source.
