Rhodiola rosea extract is made from the roots of the Arctic or Golden Root herb, a plant that has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine practice.
Today, Rhodiola is classified as an adaptogen – a natural substance that produces non-specific physiological effects that help ward off the negative effects of stress.

The majority of Rhodiola rosea supplements on the market are made from the root of the plant. Rhodiola rosea extract is a liquid concentrate produced by decocting the plant’s roots. Extracts are a common form of highly concentrated herbal supplements.
Rhodiola rosea extract is generally taken for its adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens possess three main characteristics: they have a non-specific impact on the body; are non-toxic; and promote homeostasis or balance in response to environmental, chemical, physiological or psychological stress.

Preliminary research indicates that Rhodiola rosea extract works in the body by modulating an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. There are several subtypes of monoamine oxidase, all of which exhibit different functions: for example, one subtype is responsible for metabolizing serotonin and caffeine, while another subtype is responsible for metabolizing dopamine.
By inhibiting certain subtypes, Rhodiola may help increase the levels of some neurotransmitters. For instance, when monoamine oxidase is inhibited, the body increases the synthesis of serotonin.
Serotonin is known as the “happy hormone” and, when coupled with dopamine, often confers a sense of overall wellbeing. Serotonin and dopamine also have an impact on focus, attention, cognitive function and energy.
In addition to its impact on serotonin and dopamine, Rhodiola rosea extract has been observed to reduce the production of cortisol (the so-called “stress hormone”). Cortisol is produced during periods of physical or emotional stress.
Among its many physiological effects, cortisol interferes with the healthy function of the immune system. It can also affect insulin levels as well as fat, carbohydrate and protein metabolism. The impact of cortisol on metabolism is one of the reasons why weight gain, especially around the midsection, is associated with prolonged periods of stress.
