Rhodiola is the second most popular adaptogenic herb used today. The phrase “Adaptogen” was first coined in 1947 by the Russian scientist NV Lazarev.
An adaptogen is a natural compound that is said to improve the body’s ability to adapt to environmental, chemical and physical stressors. These substances are said to generally support homeostasis and resistance to stress. They do not treat specific conditions, but help to bring the body back into balance.
In order to be an adaptogen, a supplement must meet the following conditions:
- They should assist the body to resist all forms of stress.
- They should have a normalizing influence on physiology.
- They should not interfere with the normal functioning of the body. This means they should not result in side effects, nor should the herb exert more influence than necessary.
Rhodiola Rosea tablets are said to meet these conditions because they seem to stabilize mood, alleviate fatigue in stressful situations, and boost feelings of well-being in research studies.
In one study, Rhodiola was administered alongside schisandra extract and Siberian ginseng to individuals performing stressful cognitive tasks. After one dose, study participants experienced improved attention, accuracy and processing speed when using this supplement.
Research also shows that Rhodiola pills may reduce cortisol levels when administered orally. This hormone is released when the body experiences stress, but elevated levels of cortisol can lead to negative effects including weight gain and diminished immunity.
Rhodiola also exhibits anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms and affects levels of the monoamine neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.
Varieties of Rhodiola Rosea
Rhodiola rosea tablets can contain extracts from different varieties of this plant. According to folklore, it is the Siberian Rhodiola Rosea that contains the best proportion of active constituents to provide medicinal benefits.
It is recommended to use products that provide 2-3% rosavins and 0.8-1% salidroside. Rosavins and salidrosides are two categories of active compounds found in this herbal extract.
Some manufacturers, such as New Chapter Rhodiola Force, promote their products as a “Full Spectrum” Rhodiola extract. This means that the extract contains all of the natural alkaloids and phytonutrients found in the plant in their natural proportions.
Extracts are also differentiated based on their potency. For example, some products sold online may be marked as 5:1 or 10:1 potency. A 10:1 Rhodiola tablet means that 10 grams of raw rhodiola root was used to produce 1 gram of extract.
Note that different products may recommend different dosages based on potency. It is also possible to purchase Rhodiola rosea extract in different supplement formats, such as liquid tinctures, teas or bulk powder instead of the tablets.
Dosage for Rhodiola Rosea Tablets
In clinical research studies, dosages of between 200 – 1000 mg per day of Rhodiola extract are typically used. For most clinical uses, doses of between 100 – 600 mg per day are considered effective.
Rhodiola tablets are recommended to be used on an empty stomach. The dosage is typically repeated 2 – 3 times per day. Using supplements late in the afternoon is not recommended as this may cause sleep disruptions in some individuals.
According to the Natural Medicines database, Rhodiola should be used for 1 – 2 weeks and then should be discontinued for one week. There have not been any studies to determine the optimal cycle length for Rhodiola supplements. Some users report anecdotally that using it for longer periods of time can cause a tolerance to form.
Rhodiola tablets are rated as Possibly Safe when using up to 340 mg twice a day for 6 – 10 weeks. Adverse effects can include dizziness, dry mouth, restlessness and insomnia.
