The probiotic yeast known as Saccharomyces Boulardii has been scientifically documented to have beneficial effects on the human gastrointestinal system.
This beneficial yeast survives the harsh environment of the stomach acid and can colonize the intestinal tract, where it helps to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
When combined together with a prebiotic fiber like mannan oligosaccharides, or MOS, as they are in Jarrow Formula’s Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS, this helpful yeast species is purported to support digestive health and immune function.
Some of the demonstrated benefits of using a Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS supplement include relief from diarrhea, prevention of intestinal infections including those caused by foodborne pathogens and improved gut barrier function.
Use of this probiotic supplement is also purported to promote appropriate immune response in people with inflammation due to autoimmune disorders and prevent reactions to food antigens in young infants with leaky gut.

Many species of probiotic organisms are bacteria, but some yeast microbes are also considered to be beneficial to the human microbiome. Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS, in particular, may be especially beneficial to individuals experiencing diarrhea.
Some advantages to supplementation with this probiotic yeast rather than, or in addition to, other probiotic bacteria include the following:
- Yeast are not affected by antibiotics, thus antibiotic medications do not interfere with the effects of it, nor inhibit colonization.
- While taking antibiotics, Saccharomyces Boulardii can keep other yeast like Candida albicans in check and prevent overgrowth which results in thrush or vaginal yeast infection.
- Saccharomyces Boulardii is a “non-sporing” yeast. Other species of Saccharomyces are “sporing”, meaning there is a chance of translocation to other parts of the body where the yeast may cause problems.
- Like many yeast, Saccharomyces Boulardii is transient, meaning it does not colonize the GI tract permanently, however because of certain types of clustering effects it utilizes, it is able to persist in the body longer — usually up to three days.
MOS: Mannan Oligosaccharides
Jarrow combines this potent yeast with a prebiotic, MOS, which has been shown to improve gastrointestinal health and improve energy levels. Mannon oligosaccharides are derived from the walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells.
Prebiotics are not food for probiotics, but instead they provide a form of stimulus for the beneficial organisms, encouraging colonization. Prebiotics are an insoluble fiber upon which Saccharomyces Boulardii yeast cells are able to colonize.
Jarrow Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS Formula Benefits
S. Boulardii is able to survive intact as it passes through the acidic environment of the stomach, after which it finds its target: the intestinal tract.
This microbe has been shown to improve digestive and intestinal health in a number of ways, not the least of which is immunomodulation.
Over 70% of the immune system is found within the gastrointestinal tract. When the balance of the gut microflora tips in the favor of pathogenic microorganisms, it has been shown to have a direct affect on the immune system.
Recent studies show that inflammatory disorders of the gut and bowel, like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease and Leaky Gut Syndrome are in some way connected to inappropriate immune function. Proper immunomodulation can offset some of the symptoms associated with these GI tract disorders.
A meta-analysis of studies researching Saccharomyces Boulardii was published in March of 2012.
This analysis described the ability of this yeast to regulate intestinal homeostasis; to interfere with the ability of pathogens to colonize and infect the mucosa; to modulate the local and systemic immune responses; and to stabilize the GI barrier in favor of the absorption of nutrients.
The inclusion of MOS with this probiotic yeast continues to be a significant difference between Jarrow’s formula and that of other manufacturers. Users with ulcerative colitis, clostridium difficile, leaky gut and psoriasis all continue to report relief from some symptoms.
Dosage
Start off by taking one capsule each day for a period of one week. If no beneficial effects are experienced, and no side effects are felt, increase the dosage to twice each day. Jarrow does not recommend taking more than two capsules of Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS each day.
These capsules can be taken with a meal, but as with most probiotic organisms, survival is often enhanced if taken at least two hours after a meal when the stomach acids are lessened.
Side Effects
Individuals with allergies to yeast should not take this product. In addition, those with compromised immune systems should not take probiotic supplements. Those with catheters or IV ports of any kind should talk with their health care professional before using this product.
Review
Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS is a potent formula manufactured and distributed by Jarrow Formulas.
Research shows this combination of probiotic and prebiotic are useful in the prevention and treatment of many diarrheas including Traveler’s diarrhea, C. difficile diarrhea and antibiotic-related diarrhea.
Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS is also thought to be helpful in protecting the integrity of the intestinal barrier wall and to promote appropriate immune response in those with inflammatory intestinal conditions.

I have lymphocytic colitis and IN A. I took my first saccharomyces boulardii and have horrible gas the next day.does this die down eventually
Hi Terry,
Thanks for your comment. Some people do experience gas and bloating for the first 1-3 days that they use a probiotic supplement. For others, this can last up to a week as your gastrointestinal environment goes through changes. If the gas is uncomfortable or continues for a longer period of time, check with your doctor to figure out if different products or probiotic strains would be okay to try.
