With the release of the movie Limitless featuring a fictitious smart drug known as NZT-48 which exponentially boosted human intelligence beyond its current limitations, more and more people began toying with the idea of a drug which could make them smarter.
Although it sounds like pipe-dream, scientists from around the world have been working to develop intelligence enhancing drugs which could do just that.
As of today, scientists haven’t developed anything comparable to NZT-48, but we do have a few smart drugs (also known as nootropics) which are capable of improving our cognitive functions in meaningful ways.
Nootropics, or smart drugs, are being used around the world by students, entrepreneurs, small business owners, athletes, poker players and housewives. They are used to boost learning ability, improve memory function, enhance focus and concentration, and even to improve verbal and written communication skills.
Not everyone who uses smart drugs is willing to admit it, but a recent survey (January 2013) done by the prestigious science publication, Nature found widespread use. At least one out of every five people surveyed reported using drugs for “non-medical reasons” in order to stimulate their concentration, focus and memory.
This article will focus on five of the most popular smart drugs and compare their effects, benefits, side effects, availability and cost.

- Promotes brain health & communication
- Supports memory, reasoning & cognition

Often, one of the differences between prescription and non-prescription substances is the potential they have for certain risk factors, including addiction and serious side effects.
Prescription medications are classified in “schedules” according to potential for addiction or abuse. In the world of nootropics, prescription drugs like Adderall, Ritalin and Dexedrine inevitably come to mind.
These three drugs are common psychostimulants used primarily to increase focus and concentrative abilities for those with ADHD or ADD. They are useful to help certain individuals, but aren’t necessarily the best all-around prescription cognitive enhancers.
Modafinil, a prescription drug used to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, continues to be the most popular prescription medication for smart drug users. It is a unique wakefulness promoting drug belonging to a class of drugs known as eugeroics.
Modafinil’s popularity among nootropic users has earned it a place in mainstream publications like Rolling Stone and The Atlantic, as well as being spotlighted on national news programs on ABC and CNN.
Users report Modafinil not only provides them with a natural feeling of mental wakefulness, but also promotes motivation, focus and concentration. For many users, productivity increases, projects are begun and completed, and staying on task not only becomes easier – it becomes more like a directive.
Modafinil, though potentially beneficial in the ways described, isn’t without its drawbacks as a smart drug:
- It is available only with a prescription
- It has a potential for developing a tolerance within the user (an insensitivity to the drug) over a period of time
- Its potential side effects which may outweigh the benefits for some users
- The cost, if not covered by insurance, can be exorbitant. For example, the average cost for a 30-day supply of generic Modafinil (30 pills) averages between $550-$900
For these reasons, many smart drug users opt to use a non-prescription drug called Adrafinil, which is the precursor to Modafinil.
Before There Was Modafinil, There Was Adrafinil
In the 1980s, researchers working to develop a drug to treat patients with narcolepsy discovered a substance called Adrafinil. Adrafinil is the pro-drug to Modafinil, meaning it is converted by the liver into Modafinil.
Once the researchers were able to synthesize Modafinil directly, they no longer had a need for Adrafinil and the developers stopped manufacturing it.
Since that time, other labs throughout the world have begun to produce it. It is an extremely cost-effective non-prescription alternative for those desiring the wakefulness and mental clarity provided by Modafinil.
Because it is metabolized by the liver, Adrafinil is taken in larger doses than Modafinil and can cause an elevation in liver enzymes. Adrafinil should not be taken continually, but instead used on an as-needed basis for those times when you know you need a wakeful mind and increased motivation.
Long-term use could result in increased strain on hepatic function and could lead to liver damage. This is similar to drugs like Tylenol, which need to be metabolized by the liver in order to be effective.

- Focus longer, clear brain fog & feel more motivated
- Boost energy, alertnes & memory

Piracetam
The racetam family of smart drugs are the most commonly used nootropic substances world-wide. Nootropic racetams include Piracetam, Aniracetam, Oxiracetam, Omberacetam, Pramiracetam, Phenylpiracetam Nefiracetam, Coluracetam and . Piracetam, the parent of the other racetams, was developed in the 1960s at a Belgian pharmaceutical company.
With over 50 years of research and use, Piracetam is considered safe, non-toxic and non-addictive. As a cognitive enhancer, Piracetam offers the user improved memory, learning and focus, while at the same time improving vasodilation in the brain.
Piracetam is thought to work by improving the function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter responsible for memory consolidation. It may do this potentiating the activities of acetylcholine in our brains.
Side effects, if experienced, are usually mild and can include headache and gastrointestinal upset. Piracetam, as well as any of the racetam family of nootropics, are often stacked with a quality Choline source such as Citicoline, Alpha-GPC or Centrophenoxine to offset headaches thought to be related to acetylcholine depletion.
Choline
Choline is the primary precursor molecule for the important neurotransmitter Acetylcholine which is involved in various functions ranging from memory to muscle control. Humans get Choline through their diet when they eat foods like almonds, eggs and liver, but a surprising number of people are deficient.
Acetylcholine is the second-most prevalent neurotransmitter in our brains and by providing adequate Choline for conversion to acetylcholine, there is improved communication between nerves and neurons within the brain.
With Choline supplementations, we can experience improvement in memory and learning capacities. Users have reported being able to recall events and data faster and having an enhanced ability to focus.
Choline not only promotes good overall health and improves memory faculties, it also has been shown to improve membrane fluidity of our neurons which slows down the process of aging in our brains.
Choline is available in several forms, but not all of them are equal. Some Choline supplements are not available for use in the brain because of an inability to cross the blood-brain barrier effectively. Two of the more bio-available forms of Choline are Alpha-GPC and Citicoline.
Noopept
Noopept was discovered by Russian researchers when they were attempting to make a prototype of Pramiracetam. It is a peptide which can be taken orally and passes easily through the blood-brain barrier.
Noopept is often grouped together with the racetams, though its mechanism of action may be different. It is considered to be somewhere between 500-1000x more potent than Piracetam, making the amount needed per dose extremely miniscule.
Noopept is a unique neuropeptide capable of enhancing memory, learning, focus and directed thinking. In addition, studies with rodents show Noopept has neuroprotective qualities.
Noopept shows a much greater affinity for certain receptor sites in the brain than racetams, allowing doses as small as 10-30mg to provide increased focus, improved logical thinking function, enhanced short and long-term memory functions, and increased learning ability including improved recall. In addition, users have reported a subtle psychostimulatory effect.
Which One is the Best Cognitive Enhancer?
These smart drugs are the most popular because their benefits are readily accessible by a large number of users. Because every individual’s neurochemistry is different, medications and supplements may affect each person differently.
Each of these smart drugs have a dedicated following because of the specific cognitive enhancements they offer the users.
Of these five most popular smart drugs, Piracetam continues to be the most popular and widely used cognitive enhancer. Its popularity is likely due to several factors:
- Its consistent ability to offer the user a subtle but noticeable cognitive enhancement
- Its low cost per dose in comparison to other smart drugs
- Its long history of safe use with low incidence of side effects
Many people start off with Piracetam and stay with it, never veering away. Others may choose to add Alpha-GPC or Citicoline to create a synergistic effect. Others choose to experiment with several smart drugs in order to fine-tune a stack which works with their personal body chemistry.
It is recommended to experiment with nootropic supplements one at a time in order to recognize the effects of each. Some smart drug and supplements may not offer benefits while others will provide the effects desired.
