Super Artemisinin is a dietary supplement that contains 180 mg of pure artemisinin and 20 mg of sweet wormwood oil.
It is used as a complementary alternative medicine (CAM), especially as a natural remedy for cancer and malaria.
Artemisinin is the main bioactive constituent in Artemisia annua, a common type of wormwood plant that is native to various temperate zones throughout Asia.
The term “artemisinin” is used to refer to the plant Artemisia annua, or its active phytochemical, or a class of drugs that has been synthesized from it.
Super Artemisinin is manufactured by Nutricology and comes in a bottle with 60 hypoallergenic vegetarian capsules. The manufacturer states that their product is a minimum of 98.5% pure and does not contain thujone – a compound with adverse effects found naturally in other species of the Artemisia plant.
Artemisinin supplements are commonly used to stimulate the immune system and promote general well-being. According to the manufacturer, “Research has shown artemisinin to be particularly beneficial in balancing the microbiology of the GI tract.”

Artemisinin Overview
Related Topics
The compound Artemisinin has been used as a traditional remedy for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Today, it is considered to be a folk remedy for malaria, Lyme disease and certain forms of cancer.
Research has validated its effectiveness for the treatment and prevention of malaria, but more research is needed to substantiate claims relating to cancer in a clinical setting.
Other common names for Artemisia annua include Sweet Annie and Sweet Wormwood. Sweet wormwood is not to be confused with its thujone-containing relative: Artemisia absinthe (Wormwood).
Today, Artemisia annua has widespread naturalization; thriving in numerous geographic regions worldwide. Artemisia annua is relatively low-yielding as a plant. Super Artemisinin provides concentrated amounts of artemisinin in vegetarian capsules.
The typically Artemisia Annua plant contains between 0.3-0.5% artemisinin extract. This means that the active dosage provided in a Super Artemisinin capsule is significantly higher than what would be derived from the plant in the form of an herbal tea or tincture.
Uses for Super Artemisinin
Traditionally in Asia, Artemisia annua was used to treat fevers. Its usage declined and was all but forgotten for many centuries. In 1971, renewed interest surged due to artemisinin’s antimalarial capacities. The chemical structure of artemisinin was first described in 1972 as a result of a military research product.
Since then, clinical research has looked into possible therapeutic uses for A. annua. Currently, naturopathic doctors recommend products like Super Artemisinin as an agent against:
- cancer,
- malaria,
- dysentery,
- jaundice,
- dyspepsia,
- scabies,
- fungal infections,
- bacterial infections,
- fever,
- anorexia,
- abnormal/painful menstruation,
- gallbladder disorders,
- autoimmune conditions,
- constipation,
- psoriasis,
- rheumatism,
- bruising,
- neuralgia,
- muscle sprains,
- gastric disorders,
- inflammatory conditions,
- circulation problems,
- the common cold.
Super Artemisinin for Cancer
Research into the anticancer effects of artemisinin has returned some promising results. This natural compound seems to inhibit the growth of several different types of cancer lines and promote cell death for cancerous cells.
Artemisinin acts against cancer cells selectively. Cancer cells commonly have elevated amounts of iron. Iron helps cancer and bacteria cells to grow and thrive.
When artemisinin “recognizes” cells with elevated iron, it causes the release of two oxygen molecules within those cells. This forms damaging free radical agents which act to destroy the cell.
This process of iron-induced cellular death is called ferroptosis. Artemisinin does not target healthy cells with normal iron levels, which means it is not toxic to the rest of the body. This mechanism of particularly interesting to cancer researchers who are investigating better ways to target and deliver cancer treatments.
The active constituents in Super Artemisinin have shown positive results for cancer in in vitro or laboratory studies.. In-vitro breast cancer cells were destroyed within sixteen hours with 28% effectiveness via artemisinin administration. When iron was added, the effectiveness was 98%. In leukemia cells, artemisinin destroyed nearly 100% in 8 hours.
Some doctors have called artemisinin a “smart bomb” for cancer cells. However, there has been limited research in human populations. More research and clinical trials are warranted to determine efficacy in humans.
Anti-Cancer Mechanisms
Artemisinin and its derivatives have demonstrated antiangiogenic properties in both in vitro and in vivo animal studies.
In murine tests, artesunate slowed induced tumor growth rates and decreased the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on tumor cells.
Artesunate also appears to have selectively induced apoptosis in endothelial cells from human umbilical vein tissues.
Super Artemisinin constituents, including artemisinin, have induced cytotoxicity in tumor cells. Molt-4 cells were significantly reduced via artemisinin administration. This occurred with no significant effects on healthy lymphocytes that were also present in cultured samples.
Artemisinin showed the strongest actions against leukemia and colon cancer cell lines.
More Uses of Super Artemisinin
Artemisia annua has demonstrated various therapeutic properties in research. To date, this supplement has demonstrated antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial, hematological, cannabinoid-agonizing, hormonal, immunological and antineoplastic traits.
Many of these findings are based on laboratory studies. More research is needed in clinical trial settings to validate these results in human patients.
Safety of Super Artemisinin
Super Artemisinin is rated as possibly safe when used orally, appropriately and for period not exceeding 35 days. There are no known drug, herbal, food laboratory test interactions with Super Artemisinin.
More research is needed to determine safety of long-term use of artemisinin supplements. This drug has been extensively used for the treatment of malaria in ACTs (Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies). However, it may not be appropriate for all individuals. Speak to your doctor before buying Super Artemisinin.
