Super Thisilyn is a dietary supplement produced by Nature’s Way. It is marketed as an “advanced detox formula for liver support.” [1]
The supplement contains a specific brand of milk thistle extract (Thisilyn) combined with other herbs to promote liver health and detoxification pathways.
Super Thisilyn is part of a line of products containing Thisilyn, a proprietary milk thistle extract synthesized for improved absorption and standardized to contain an 80% concentration of silymarin.
Nature’s Way notes that Thisilyn is more easily absorbed by the body compared to other forms of silymarin extract. It is purported to be 2x more bioavailable than standard extracts from this plant.
According to the manufacturer, this is because it quickly dissolves and does not clump in the gastrointestinal tract like some other milk thistle extracts.
In addition to silymarin, this product also contains protectamins, artichoke extract, dandelion root, alpha lipoic acid, turmeric, l-methionine, n-acetyl cysteine and other ingredients that support liver health.

Super Thysilyn is promoted as helping “to support healthy fat metabolism in the liver, while also assisting in bile production, secretion and release.”
According to Nature’s Way, this product can keep your liver functioning optimally, support energy metabolism, control cholesterol production, and maintain hormone balance.
Milk thistle extract usually refers to silymarin, the bioactive component of the milk thistle plant (Silybum marianum).
Silymarin is concentrated in the seeds of the plant and is composed of several flavonoids, including silibinin, silidianin and silicristin.
It has been observed to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardioprotective and hepatoprotective (liver protecting) properties. Super Thisilyn is promoted as a more effective form of silymarin extract due to its improved oral bioavailability.
Nature’s Way suggests taking Super Thisilyn three times a day, preferably before meals. Each 525 mg vegetable capsule contains:
- Thisilyn 175 mg
- Protectamins (broccoli, cabbage and spinach concentrates) 75 mg
- Artichoke extract 75 mg
- Dandelion root 50 mg
- L-Methionine 50 mg
- N-Acetyl Cysteine 50 mg
- Turmeric extract standardized to 95% curcuminoids 50 mg
- Alpha Lipoic Acid 25 mg
According to Nature’s Way, Super Thisylin has been designed to support enhanced liver function by increasing bile synthesis. It is also used to improve protein synthesis within the liver and to support healing after liver damage, especially damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption or drug use.
Super Thisilyn Uses
Milk thistle has been used for millennia as both a food and traditional medicine to treat the liver and gallbladder. Researchers suspect that the plant is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, but it is now naturalized across the continent. It can also be found in parts of North America after it was brought over by European explorers.
Milk thistle can be identified by its purple flowers and by the white veins that run through its leaves. The top of the thistle was traditionally boiled like an artichoke and eaten as a spring tonic.
Today, the seeds of the milk thistle plant are most commonly used in the production of milk thistle supplements like Nature’s Way Super Thisilyn. Super Thisilyn is standardized to contain 80 % silymarin, which is equivalent to 140 mg of silymarin per dose.
The seeds contain the highest concentration of silymarin – between 3 and 6% – meaning that Thisilyn has a substantially higher concentration of silymarin than can be naturally found in the plant.
Super Thisilyn Effects
Silymarin exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates it may help protect the liver from the damage caused by some toxins, including alcohol and prescription medications. [2]
Silymarin is also used to treat alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis. In clinical trials, the effects of silymarin have been mixed, but many studies indicate that milk thistle and silymarin improve liver function and help increase survival rates in individuals with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis. [2]
It is important to note that many tests involving silymarin and cirrhosis and other liver conditions relied on dosages between 420-450 mg and have only used silymarin.
Super Thisilyn for Liver Function
This supplement also contains a number of additional natural compounds that may have complementary benefits with milk thistle extract. Most of the ingredients contained in the Super Thisilyn supplement are connected to liver health and bile production.
Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) is used as a digestive tonic and is thought to stimulate bile production. In animal studies, it has been observed to affect liver enzyme levels. In particular, it has been observed to increase the levels of the “detoxifying” enzyme UDP glucoronsyl transferase. [3]
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is commonly used to support digestion and has been approved by the German Commission E (the regulatory body that oversees the prescription of herbals in Germany) for dyspepsia (indigestion). One of the ways it is thought to support digestion is by increasing the synthesis of bile in the liver and gallbladder.
Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) is used to improve bile flow from the liver and gallbladder.
L-methionine is an amino acid that has been observed to prevent liver damage from acetaminophen poisoning. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database notes that methionine may aggravate existing liver damage in patients with liver disease. [4]
Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant that is naturally produced in the body. It can also be found in foods like spinach and broccoli. Its use is advocated for liver disease, but the mechanism of action remains unknown and there are no human studies to indicate its efficacy. However, it plays a role in part of the citric acid cycle, which is involved in alcohol metabolism. [5]
N-acetyl cysteine is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. It exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and is known to affect liver enzyme levels. However, the mechanism by which it affects the liver remains unknown. [6]
