Vinpocetine is a chemical compound that first isolated from the periwinkle plant in 1975.
It is actually a component of another alkaloid in periwinkle known as Vincamine.
When it was discovered in Hungary that Vinpocetine could provide significant improvements in brain function while cutting out some of the risk of side effects with Vincamine, this purer alkaloid largely replaced the market for Vincamine supplements.
The first mass production of this synthetic version of Vinpocetine was begun in 1978, also in Hungary by a major pharmaceutical company.
This supplement has only recently become available in the US through food, drug, and mass market retailers. However, it has been used extensively throughout Europe (especially Eastern Europe).
Many physicians and researchers think that this is even more effective than supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba when used for enhancing memory and brain power. It offers many of the same cerebral enhancing effects as ginkgo, but Vinpocetine appears to work much more quickly.
Today Vinpocetine is used as an over-the-counter natural treatment for Alzheimer’s and dementia as well as age-related memory loss. It is promoted as one of the best anti-aging supplements around and is also commonly used as a smart drug because it can enhance mental clarity, help you focus and improve your level of alertness.
Vinpocetine Research
Vinpocetine has been extensively studied as a supplement in Europe. Much of this research focusses on the effects of Vinpocetine on the human brain. This research shows Vinpocetine can provide memory enhancement, increased cognitive performance, improved cerebral circulation, and higher mental acuity and awareness.
Almost all of the current studies into Vinpocetine focus on these cognitive benefits in patients with some form of memory impairment or in elderly individuals. However, even when used by normal healthy adults, this supplement still has shown significant improvements for brain power. It may also be a tool in the prevention of cognitive decline whereas we are currently largely limited to treating these symptoms after the fact.
Vinpocetine is one of those supplements that is used equally by university-aged students all the way to elderly individuals who want to prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s or slow the progress of the disease. This widespread user profile is in part due to the neuroprotective effects of this natural nootropic Using Vinpocetine supplements can help to nourish the brain and improve the overall health of your brain cells and aggregate systems.
Vinpocetine for Brain Health
As a vasodilator, the supplement causes the dilation or relaxation of blood vessel walls slightly, enabling the easier movement of oxygen and other nutrients to the brain. This means that it might play a role in preventing brain damage to some extent – especially due to strokes or high blood pressure in the body.
Vinpocetine is also an anti-inflammatory for the brain which can support repair of damaged brain tissue while increasing the rate of oxygen uptake into brain cells. There is some evidence suggesting that it may prevent the neurotoxic effects implicated in Alzheimer’s disease.
Because it can increase blood circulation to the cerebrum, this results in better energy metabolism in your brain cells as well as more efficient neuronal communication. Increased nutrient and oxygen uptake in the brain can heighten feelings of alertness as well as supply the brain with more of the resources it needs to synthesize neurotransmitters as well as other chemical messengers.
For this reason it is unsurprising that many who take Vinpocetine say that they feel more awake and aware and that the speed of their cognitive processing is dramatically improved.
Many users say that this compound allows them to concentrate and focus much more easily while others say that the primary benefits are in the speed of recall and how “sharp” your mind feels. Vinpocetine reviews often sat that it makes their thoughts more clear and that they do not have to think as hard when trying to make a decision or come up with a proper.
One of the most profound benefits is in the area of memory retention, particularly for short-term memories as well as learning new subjects.
Individuals say that they can now remember credit card numbers or phone numbers with ease and that they are remembering more from events that happened many years in the past. Content from reading articles or books is retained for longer periods of time and you may feel like you have better comprehension of what you are reading.
One 64-year old posted the following review on Amazon: “Vinpocetine has improved both my short-term (5 minutes to 16 hours) and midterm (1-5 days) memory. I am remembering names, numbers, and the specifics of events that I know would have been fuzzier without it.”
Other Vinpocetine Benefits
There are user reviews that also give praise to the numerous other benefits of Vinpocetine. These including helping to improving hearing and sight, urinary continence, and even enhancing athletic performance. This last one is likely due to the fact that this supplement is able to improve cardiovascular function and cardiac output.
Vinpocetine has also been used in Europe for treating hearing disorders. Following trauma to the ear, it has been found that this supplement can result in hearing improvements, especially in cases of tinnitus or ‘ringing’ of the ears. The sooner Vinpocetine powder is taken, the better the overall improvements.
This supplement has also been used with some success in treating urinary incontinence. This condition is normally the result of spasms in the bladder muscles.
Since Vinpocetine tablets have the ability to help smooth muscles relax, this can serve to reduce or even eliminate the spasm which cause this condition. Research indicates this can be helpful with urgency, urge incontinence, and other bladder issues.
This supplement also helps improve cardiovascular function. For example, it serves to reduces and repair atherosclerotic plaque that can build up within organs throughout the body. It also improves cardiac output and nutritive blood flow to various organs and, of course, dilates blood vessels.
Not only this, but it scavenges toxic metals in the body such as aluminum and lead. The flexibility of red blood cells are also increased by supplementation, leading to a number of life-extension benefits.
How to Use Vinpocetine
While many Vinpocetine reviews are highly positive, there are also some who say that it can make them tired or that it does not have much of an effect on them at all. Unfortunately, the only way you will know whether it works for you is by trying it yourself. The recommended dosage level of Vinpocetine seems to be somewhere between 10 and 50 mg per day.
It may be taken with or without food, but it does appear to be most effective when split into smaller administrations throughout the day. This should not require more than 5 or 10 mg two to four times a day.
You should always start with a smaller amount to test the effects of this compound on your personal biochemistry. Then, you can increase until you achieve your desired results.
You can buy Vinpocetine as a standalone compound or get it in a supplement stack like Alpha Brain from Onnit Labs.

According to some internet searches that I have done, vinpocetine has better bioavailability when taken with foods rich in fat. Stated as so because vinpocetine is lipophilic.
