Yohimbe 451 is a sexual wellness supplement made by GNC. The active ingredient in this product is 451 mg of pure yohimbe bark extract.
Yohimbe extract comes from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, an evergreen that grows in tropical areas of West Africa, including Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria and Congo. In those countries, it has traditionally been taken as a general tonic, aphrodisiac and athletic performance enhancer.
The bark of this tree contains the alkaloid yohimbine, which was prescribed for erectile dysfunction, but has been replaced by more modern remedies such as Viagra.
GNC’s Yohimbe 451 is marketed to men for sexual health and erectile function. It is also used to boost libido in women. However, some experience side effects when using yohimbine supplements and it is not recommended for everyone.

Yohimbe 451 is used primarily as a sexual enhancer and to combat erectile dysfunction.
Research shows that it works by increasing blood flow to the penis and genitals. In addition to supporting erectile function, this supplement can also improve sensitivity to touch and sexual enjoyment.
Yohimbine is also taken as an energy supplement and fat burner. This supplement is sometimes used by bodybuilders during their “cutting cycle” to help them rapidly reduce their body fat composition.
In a study which examined effectiveness for exercise performance and fat burning, a group of 20 top-level soccer players took 20 milligrams of yohimbine divided into two equal doses for 21 days.
As compared to a placebo group, the group taking yohimbine experienced significant fat loss by the end of the study. However, study participants did not see improvements in exercise performance or muscle mass.
How to Take Yohimbe 451
According to label instructions, Yohimbe 451 is meant to be consumed in a one-pill dose. This will supply 9 mg of yohimbine alkaloids per serving, derived from 451 mg of yohimbe bark extract.
There is no standard dosage for yohimbine. The supplement has been used in different quantities in a number of clinical studies.
In another series of studies on yohimbine for erectile dysfunction, doses ranged from one milligram to 100 milligrams. The yohimbine was divided into two doses and taken two to four hours before sexual activity.
According to Sloan Kettering, other studies on erectile dysfunction included doses at the following levels:
- 36 mg daily for 25 days
- Five mg to 15 mg taken three times daily
When used for weight loss, .2 mg of yohimbine is recommended for each kilogram of body weight. A man who weighs 220 pounds would take 20 mg per day.
In most studies, the dosage of yohimbine is divided to reduce the likelihood of side effects. Taking too much at once can increase the risk of adverse reactions.
Yohimbe 451 Benefits
According to user reviews, GNC’s Yohimbe 451 supplement is taken for weight loss, energy and for erectile dysfunction.
On both Amazon and on GNC’s website, reviewers have given Yohimbe 451 an average of three stars out of five.
Many positive reviews cite the product’s high level of effectiveness for ED symptoms. Both positive and negative reviewers indicate that they notice an appreciable effect after taking Yohimbe 451.
Many consumers use Yohimbe 451 instead of Viagara, but it has not been approved for this use. Research shows that it is not as effective as Viagara for the treatment of ED.
In a study on men taking Viagra, 60% were able to have sexual intercourse after taking the medication.
By contrast, a group of 10 studies on yohimbine saw 30% able to attain a satisfactory erection after taking the supplement. Studies indicate that yohimbine is most effective for men who have organic vascular dysfunction.
While yohimbine was once prescribed for ED, it is not commonly used as a prescription medication anymore. However, yohimbe bark extract can be purchased as an over-the-counter dietary supplement, without a prescription.
This may lead to some people choosing Yohimbe 451 for ED over prescription alternatives.
However, it is important to consult with a doctor before using Yohimbe for ED to determine whether this supplement is appropriate for you and whether there may be a better treatment alternative.
Yohimbe 451 Side Effects

Some users are able to tolerate the supplement well and may not experience any adverse effects. However, others have reported negative effects even at low doses of this supplement.
Reviewers on Amazon who stated that they had a negative experience frequently cited nausea, chills and jitters as side effects.
Many recommend taking Yohimbe 451 with food or attempting to take lower doses when first using this product.
Dangers of Yohimbe Supplements
Additionally, yohimbine has been associated with more severe adverse effects in a number of situations.
A study of reports to the California Poison Control Center produced 238 cases associated with yohimbine over a seven year period. 98.7% were related to herbal yohimbe supplements, as opposed to prescribed medicatons.
Just under twenty-eight percent of cases involved men who were taking yohimbine for sexual enhancement. Researchers concluded that yohimbine exposures were more likely to be associated with serious outcomes than the average
At least two unrelated deaths have been attributed to yohimbine overdoses. In one instance, a 39-year-old bodybuilder experienced vomiting, seizures, malaise and loss of consciousness after taking this product along with other supplements.
In another case, a 42-year-old man taking yohimbine for erectile dysfunction suffered extreme pain and a persistent erection, which needed to be treated surgically.
A 42-year-old man taking yohimbine for impotence experienced skin eruptions, lupus-like symptoms and kidney failure.
Serious side effects are often linked to the use of yohimbe or yohimbine supplements along with contraindicated drugs or supplements.
A number of health conditions can be made worse by using yohimbine extract. Check with your doctor for a full list of contraindications.
