The term “yohimbe bark extract” refers to an extract taken from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, which is an evergreen found in western Africa.
Yohimbine, on the other hand, is an alkaloid found in yohimbe bark extract. When standardized for use as the active ingredient in supplements, it is referred to as “yohimbine hydrochloride.”
These differences are important to understand, as they affect the dosage of supplement you need to consume in order to get the right amount of the active ingredient.
Specifically, taking 5 mg of yohimbe bark extract, which contains an unknown amount of yohimbine, is not the same as taking 5 mg of pure yohimbine HCL. Thus, it is essential to understand exactly how your supplement is formulated and how much yohimbine it contains.
How Much Yohimbine HCL to Take
The amount of yohimbine HCL you should take depends on the condition you are treating. For example, the recommended yohimbine dosage for fat loss is different than the recommended yohimbine dosage for ED.

Recommended Yohimbe Dosage

Some products provide a dosage of 450 – 500 mg per serving, while other supplements on the market provide 2.5 – 5.4 mg per serving. Which is corrent?
Yohimbe and yohimbine are not the same. Thus, the recommended dosage of yohimbine HCL for a given purpose will not be the same as the recommended yohimbe bark dosage for the same purpose.
Products that provide a dose of 450 – 500 mg per serving are typically measuring the serving size in milligrams of yohimbe extract and not in milligrams of yohimbine alkaloids.
In order to determine how much yohimbe bark extract you must take in order to get the proper amount of yohimbine, you must know the concentration of the supplement you are using.
For example, most yohimbe bark products will say that they are standardized to contain between 2 – 3% yohimbine alkaloids. This means that a product with 500 mg of bark extract will have an effective dosage of 10 – 15 mg of yohimbine per capsule.
Unfortunately, the production of yohimbe bark extract is not currently standardized, and the amount of yohimbine in various products varies considerably.
In fact, an analysis of 26 different commercial yohimbe products showed that most supplements have very small concentrations of yohimbine, ranging from less than 0.1 ppm to 489 ppm.
Many of the supplements analyzed contain virtually no active alkaloids at all. Because of these issues, it is important for consumers to research different yohimbe products carefully before making a purchase.
Adverse Effects of Yohimbine HCL
Yohimbine HCL can produce adverse effects, especially when it is taken in large doses or with medications known to interact with it. Some of the most common side effects of this substance include:
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Agitation
- Myocardial infarction
- Seizure
- Changes in blood pressure
- Respiratory depression
To avoid these side effects, never take more than the recommended yohimbine dosage for your intended purpose.
You should also avoid all medications that are known to interact with yohimbine, including naloxone, tricyclic antidepressants, stimulants, phenothiazines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and guanabenz.

People who consume yohimbine HCL may experience side effects, and studies have indicated that these effects are dose related. As a result, consumers should take no more than the smallest effective dose of this drug.

At this time, no specific maximum safe yohimbine dosage has been established. However, in clinical trials, dosages of up to 100 mg per day in divided doses have been used in healthy adults without significant adverse effects.
